Porto with Friends: Celebrating a 50th Birthday in Portugal’s Most Romantic City

In September 2026 I escaped to Porto with a group of 11 friends, a mix of couples and singles, to celebrate a very special 50th birthday. I had high hopes for the city, but Porto exceeded every single one of them.

If I had to sum it up in three words: romantic, vibrant and exciting. Think tiled facades glowing in the late afternoon sun, music drifting from tucked‑away bars and the sparkle of the Douro River as the city lights begin to twinkle.

Porto is perfect for a celebration city break, especially for groups, and my own trip gave me so many ideas I cannot wait to share with my clients.

Where We Stayed & Getting Around

We based ourselves at Hotel da Música, a stylish hotel that worked well for our group. It was a little outside the very heart of the old town, so we quickly settled into a routine: lots of walking when we felt like tackling Porto’s famous hills, and plenty of Ubers when we did not.

For groups, Ubers are plentiful, easy and relatively inexpensive. They are a great option when you have had a long day exploring or are dressed up for the evening and do not fancy arriving everywhere a little windswept and out of breath from the climb.

Once you are down by the river or in the historic centre, the best way to get under Porto’s skin is very simple: walk, wander and let yourself get a little lost.

Top tip for clients: pack comfy shoes and light clothing if you are visiting in summer. The cobbles and hills are no joke when the sun is shining and you are trudging up and down steps between viewpoints and wine lodges.

Falling in Love with Vila Nova de Gaia

One of my favourite areas was Vila Nova de Gaia, on the opposite side of the river from Porto’s Ribeira. It is hilly, winding and full of character, with street art, wine lodges and plenty of little corners that are perfect for people‑watching.

From here you can really appreciate Porto’s iconic bridges. The views across the Douro are incredible at any time of day, but they are especially magical at sunset. We took the gondola up the hill to take in the panorama: terracotta rooftops, church spires, boats gliding along the water and that golden light that makes everything feel a little bit cinematic.

If you are feeling brave, you can also watch the local youngsters jumping from the bridge into the water below. It is strictly a spectator sport in my book, but it adds to the buzzy, energetic feel of the riverfront.

My Favourite Porto Moments

For me, Porto’s magic lies in the moments between the big sights.

One of my absolute favourite memories is wonderfully simple: grabbing a few cans of Super Bock ( the local beer)  from the supermarket and heading up the hill to watch the sunset. No tickets, no reservations, just friends gathered together as the sky changed colour over the city. It was one of those perfect travel evenings that will stay with me for a long time.

Another stand‑out experience was our sunset boat trip with Ondourotours. Gliding along the Douro, bridges arching overhead, the city slowly lighting up around us, felt incredibly special. The birthday girl was thoroughly spoiled with champagne, cake and balloons, which turned it from “lovely cruise” into “unforgettable birthday moment”. For groups and celebrations, I would say a private or small‑group sunset cruise is a must.

and... the birthday girl getting up and singing with the band at a Tapas restaurant was a huge highlight and one she will never forget !

A Morning at Bolhão Market

We also spent time exploring Bolhão Market, which I would really recommend building into a Porto itinerary. It is an undercover market, so it is perfect even if the weather is a little changeable.

We wandered between the stalls with a glass of Port in hand, sampling local fish, cheeses and fresh fruit as we went. It is a great place to pick up crafts and souvenirs with a more authentic feel, and for groups it is an easy, relaxed way to soak up local life without having to march everyone around on a structured tour. You can graze, browse and people‑watch at your own pace.

Eating, Drinking & Port Tasting

Porto is a dream for food and drink lovers, and our group leaned into that wholeheartedly.

One of the highlights was Rua Tapas and Music Bar. The atmosphere was brilliant, the food delicious and the live music created exactly the kind of ambiance you want on a celebration trip. It is the kind of place where you settle in “for a drink or two” and suddenly it is hours later and you are still there, chatting and singing along.

A Port tasting is a non‑negotiable in Porto, and we chose Cockburn’s for our experience. It was absolutely fabulous: informative without being stuffy, and a lovely way to appreciate just how varied Port can be. If you are heading to Porto, especially as a group, I would strongly recommend pre‑booking a tasting there.

Food‑wise, Porto delivers plenty of treats. Make time to try:

Fresh sardines

Pastel de nata, the famous Portuguese custard tarts

The legendary francesinha, Porto’s indulgent sandwich (we ran out of time to try it ourselves, so it is top of my list for next time!)

Down by the river, I loved the simple pleasure of trying a Port and tonic with a slice of fresh lemon. It is wonderfully refreshing, and a fun twist on both a gin and tonic and a classic glass of Port.

For groups, my key advice is to make restaurant reservations in advance, particularly at weekends and especially if you want somewhere with a bit of atmosphere. Porto is popular and your future self will thank you when you are not wandering around trying to find a table for 8, 10 or more.

Porto for Groups: Why It Works So Well

For me as a Travel Counsellor, this trip really confirmed how perfect Porto is for special occasion getaways and group celebrations.

Value for money is excellent, from eating out to Ubers, which really helps when you are coordinating a bigger group.

Best of all, the city gives you the perfect backdrop to what really matters: quality time together. When I look back on this trip, it is the laughs, the shared toasts, the impromptu moments and the memories made with best friends that stand out above everything else.
