Castles of the Rhine - Uniworld River Cruise
Koblenz, Cologne & Leopard Print Memories
Last August, my mum and I swapped everyday life for storybook villages, gothic spires and glassy river views as we boarded Uniworld’s SS Antoinette for their Castles of the Rhine river cruise. Luxury river cruising really is the most indulgent way to enjoy a multi-city escape: you unpack once, settle into a beautiful 5-star boutique river ship, and wake up somewhere new each morning. With Uniworld’s ultra luxury all-inclusive touches, elegant décor, fine dining, premium drinks and personal service, it felt like a very special mother–daughter trip to share. Our journey took us from Basel to Amsterdam along the Rhine River, with stops including Strasbourg, Mannheim, Rüdesheim, Koblenz and Cologne: a ribbon of cities, castles and vineyards, all viewed from the comfort of the ship.
Boarding SS Antoinette: Settling In
Because river levels were particularly high, we embarked in Breisach rather than central Basel. It felt like the start of a small adventure, and once we stepped aboard SS Antoinette any minor logistics melted away.
We had a cosy lower-deck stateroom that could be set up as either a double or a twin. Each evening the crew would quietly separate the beds while we were at dinner, so we returned to a perfectly turned-down room, ready for a restful night on our Rhine cruise.
On that first afternoon we discovered a corner of the ship that became “ours”: shelves of jigsaws and Scrabble, ideal for gentle competition between shore excursions. It set the tone for the whole week: relaxed, social and wonderfully unhurried, exactly what you want from a slow travel experience.
Alsace Charms: Eguisheim & Kaysersberg
Our first full day on the river took us into Alsace, a region that looks as if it has been lifted straight from a fairytale and is perfect for photogenic Europe content.
In Eguisheim, we wandered cobbled lanes looping around half-timbered houses painted in soft pastels and rich ochres. Window boxes spilled over with flowers, and every corner offered another Instagram-worthy view. We sampled Kugelhopf, the classic Alsatian brioche-like cake, lightly sweet and perfect with coffee.
Next came Kaysersberg, another picture-perfect town where we paused for a traditional tarte flambée. Thin, crisp and topped with cream, onions and lardons, it was simple, comforting and exactly what you want on a leisurely day of exploring.
Back on board, the river carried us through a series of impressive locks and dams, including the engineering giant of Écluse de Marckolsheim. As we glided upwards and onwards, we dressed for dinner and were treated to beautifully presented scallops and veal, a perfect showcase of the gourmet dining on this all-inclusive luxury river cruise.

Strasbourg: Cathedrals, Clocks & Gentle Strolls
By the time we reached Strasbourg, there was a softly autumnal feel in the air: leaves just beginning to turn, a hint of chill in the breeze and that cosy fall travel atmosphere.
One of the things I appreciated most about Uniworld was that shore excursions are included in the fare, and they genuinely cater for different needs. There were standard walking tours and also gentle walking tours for those with limited mobility, which was ideal for my mum after her hip replacement in March. It made this itinerary a great option for multi-generational and accessible travel.
Strasbourg’s Cathédrale Notre-Dame is a masterpiece of gothic architecture, soaring upwards with its intricate flying buttresses and rich stonework. Its most striking feature is the single spire, giving the cathedral a slightly asymmetrical look. Originally two were planned, but history (and budgets) had other ideas.
Inside, we stood in front of Strasbourg’s famous astronomical clock, a 16th-century wonder that tracks time, planetary movements and even the date of Easter. The real magic happens at 12:30, when the tiny mechanical figures spring into motion.
After our tour, we returned to SS Antoinette for some downtime. The ship’s small indoor pool was the perfect place for a refreshing dip after sightseeing, and the loungers on the sun deck became our go-to spot for a little sun and river-gazing between ports.

Hofgut HolzmĂĽhle: A Hidden Sanctuary near Worms
One of the most unexpected highlights came when we sailed on towards Worms and joined a visit to Hofgut HolzmĂĽhle, tucked away in the forests of Rhineland-Palatinate. This was one of those unique off-the-beaten-path experiences that make a cruise feel extra special.
This 500-year-old mill has been lovingly transformed into a sanctuary of beauty, culture and calm. We wandered through lush, almost magical gardens, discovering sculptures and treasures from far-flung cultures at every turn. In the serene Buddha Hall, blessed by Tibetan monks, you could almost feel the stillness settle over you.
Hofgut Holzmühle is the creation of photographer Timo Heiny, who documents disappearing tribal cultures, and Bernard Louis. Together they have built a “manufactory of possibilities”: part guest house, part retreat, part gallery and part private museum.
Inside, we explored their collection of artefacts gathered from years of travel and work overseas, including a genuine Egyptian mummy. Many pieces are for sale, turning the space into a living, evolving exhibition.
Since this is still a working mill, we also enjoyed a tasting of different breads, served simply with olive oil and sea salt. Bread mixes and recipes were available to buy in the onsite shop, a tempting way to take a little piece of Rhineland culinary culture home.

A Taste of Life on Board: Dining on SS Antoinette
I have to pause for a dedicated moment to talk about the food, because it really was exceptional throughout and deserves its own #foodie spotlight.
Every meal felt considered and beautifully composed, with menus that balanced regional flavours and refined classics. One evening in particular stands out. We began with crunchy coriander and panko breaded shrimp balls, perfectly crisp and delicately spiced, followed by a silky cream of parsnip soup.
For our main course we enjoyed stuffed chicken breast with a rich red wine sauce, garlic mash and sautéed spinach: comfort food elevated to fine dining at sea. Dessert was a heavenly apple strudel with warm vanilla sauce and vanilla ice cream, the kind of dish that makes you linger just a little bit longer at the table.
Beyond the menus, what truly made dining special was the service. The crew and staff were consistently warm, attentive and genuinely friendly, many of them remembering our preferences after just a day or two. It felt more like being welcomed back to a favourite club than being a face among hundreds, which is exactly why I love small ship and river cruising.

RĂĽdesheim: Vineyards, Riesling & RĂĽdesheim Coffee
Further along the Rhine we arrived at RĂĽdesheim am Rhein, a charming town of traditional half-timbered houses and narrow lanes that feels tailor-made for wine lovers and photographers.
Here I joined one of the included excursions: a vineyard hike with Riesling tasting. Our guide was both passionate and knowledgeable, bringing the winemaking traditions of the region to life as we walked among the vines. Tasting local Riesling in the very landscape where it is grown was a simple but memorable pleasure.
We also learned how to make the town’s famous Rüdesheim coffee: a gloriously indulgent concoction of coffee, Asbach brandy, sugar and whipped cream. It is the sort of drink that warms you from the inside out and pairs perfectly with good company. You can see my Rüdesheim coffee reel on Instagram here: perfect content for anyone who loves cocktail and coffee inspiration.
For a different perspective, there is a cable car up to the Niederwalddenkmal monument above the vineyards, offering sweeping views over the Rhine and its patchwork of vines. In the afternoon we returned to the top deck as the ship sailed through one of the most scenic stretches of the river.
Castle after castle drifted by, each with its own legends and history, as we listened to gentle commentary. The combination of striking scenery, storytelling and the slow rhythm of the river created one of the most magical afternoons of the cruise.

Marksburg Castle at Sunset: Stepping Back in Time
After dinner that evening, we made our way up to Marksburg Castle, a fortress that has watched over the Rhine for more than 700 years. Unlike many of its neighbours, it has never been destroyed, which makes it one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the region.
The walk up was rewarded with extraordinary views over the river valley. As the sun began to set, the landscape below was bathed in shades of gold and rose, the sky stretching out endlessly from the castle’s battlements. It was one of those perfect golden hour travel moments.
Inside, a knowledgeable guide led us through winding corridors and heavy wooden doors into echoing stone chambers. We explored rooms once used by knights, peered into the atmospheric kitchen with its cavernous hearth, and visited the armory, where racks of weapons and armour hinted at centuries of defence and power.
With every worn step and time-darkened mural, the castle felt less like a relic and more like a place still very much alive with stories. By the time twilight deepened over the Rhine, it was easy to imagine the lives that had unfolded within those walls.

Koblenz, Cologne & Leopard Print Memories
As the cruise began its final chapter, we sailed towards Koblenz, soaking up the scenery from the sundeck one last time before returning for a relaxed lunch on board. From there, the ship continued with a gentle afternoon cruise to Cologne, ideal for some final river cruise photo dumps.
One of my favourite small moments of the trip happened here: in true Uniworld spirit, every lady on board who owned leopard print gathered in the Leopard Bar for a joyful group photo. It sounds fun and frivolous, but it summed up what makes river cruising so special. On a smaller ship, you really do get to know your fellow guests, and by the end of the week you feel part of a little travelling community.
We joined a gentle walking tour of Cologne, crossing the famous bridge lined with lovers’ padlocks, admiring the mighty Cologne Cathedral, and braving the breezy riverfront. Later, we enjoyed a coffee in the square with new friends, watching the world go by and reflecting on the week.
Our final evening brought the gala dinner, complete with heartfelt speeches from the captain and crew. It was emotional in the best way: a celebration of shared experiences and the friendships formed along the way. That night, we exchanged contact details with many of the lovely people we had met, hoping our paths might cross again on some future voyage.

Farewell in Amsterdam
The next morning we woke to find the ship docked in Amsterdam. After a final leisurely breakfast, it was time to say goodbye to SS Antoinette, the crew who had looked after us so beautifully, and the river that had become our constant companion.
We disembarked with suitcases full of clothes and hearts full of memories: mother–daughter conversations over coffee on deck, laughter over Scrabble scores, quiet moments watching the riverbanks slide by, and the shared wonder of castles, cathedrals and cobbled streets.
