Christmas Markets River Cruise - A-Rosa
My Festive Escape on A-ROSA Clea
There is something undeniably magical about Europe in December: twinkling fairy lights, the scent of cinnamon and cloves, mugs of steaming glühwein warming your hands as church bells ring in the background. Experiencing it all from the comfort of a Christmas markets river cruise takes that magic to another level.
My festive break on A-ROSA Clea blended cosy winter city breaks with the ease of river cruising. Instead of packing and unpacking, catching trains or dragging a suitcase across icy pavements, I settled into my cabin, wrapped up in a scarf and watched some of Germany’s most charming riverside towns glide past. By day, it was all about Christmas markets, culture and hot chocolate. By night, it was good food, relaxed company and the soft glow of the ship’s lights reflecting on the water.

Manchester to Cologne: Markets Before We Even Boarded
Our journey started with a flight from Manchester to Frankfurt, followed by an easy train ride to Cologne. Stepping out of the station, the first thing you see is the Cologne Cathedral, towering above the city and providing a dramatic backdrop to our very first Christmas market.
We put our luggage into storage at the station so we could make the most of the afternoon. Within minutes we were weaving our way between wooden chalets, the gothic spires of the cathedral rising above us and the smells of bratwurst, fried mushrooms, gingerbread and Germknödel wrapping us in a warm, sugary hug.
We quickly learnt the glühwein ritual. You queue to pay for your glühwein and a deposit for the mug, then, in theory, queue again later to return it and collect your deposit. It did not take us long to decide that life was too short to queue twice, so we forfeited the deposits and kept the mugs as souvenirs. They became our faithful companions for the rest of the trip and came in handy at other markets too.
After a first blissful hit of German Christmas markets, we headed back to the station, collected our luggage and walked to the meeting point to join our A-ROSA representative. A short coach transfer later, we were standing on the quay, ready to board A-ROSA Clea and begin our river adventure.

Life On Board A-ROSA Clea: Cosy Comfort Between Markets
From the moment we stepped aboard A-ROSA Clea, it felt like checking into a floating winter hotel. Each guest was greeted with a single rose as they boarded, a simple but lovely touch that set the tone for the trip.
The décor is modern and comfortable, with plenty of warm corners to curl up in between shore visits, whether that is with a book, a hot drink or a slice of cake from the afternoon tea spread. The majority of guests were German, with just a handful of English travellers, which gave the whole experience a lovely authentic feel. We naturally gravitated towards the other English speakers and shared a table at dinner each night, quickly forming our own little “cruise family”.
Our cabin was compact but cleverly designed, with twin beds, a French balcony and a good-sized shower room. Floor-to-ceiling windows meant we could enjoy the scenery even when it was too chilly to be out on deck. Waking up, drawing the curtains and seeing a new town – and a new Christmas market – waiting outside became one of my favourite rituals of the trip.
On board, the dress code is delightfully relaxed: no tuxedos or ball gowns, just cosy jumpers, boots and your favourite festive scarf. Meals are a genuine highlight, with a mix of buffet and plated options, regional dishes and plenty of comforting winter favourites. Think warming soups, roasts, seasonal vegetables and indulgent desserts, exactly what you want after a few hours wandering around in the cold.
At the stern there is a second lounge area with games and puzzles, ideal for a quiet hour after dinner. Up on the top deck is a jacuzzi, which, judging by the looks we received, we may well have been the only people to use. There is something wonderfully daft about sitting in a hot tub in December, watching the world drift by, and we fully embraced our “mad English women” reputation.
Entertainment is low-key but fun. On our first evening a fabulous violinist filled the lounge with rock classics, a surprisingly perfect soundtrack to cocktails and candlelight.

Rüdesheim am Rhein: Coffee, Cable Cars & Christmas Cheer
Our first port of call, on a crisp, sunny morning, was Rüdesheim am Rhein. One of the major joys of a Christmas markets river cruise is that you almost always dock close to the town centre. Rivers run right through the heart of European cities, so there is rarely far to walk before you are in the middle of the action. Rüdesheim was no exception.
Hats, scarves and gloves on, we stepped off the ship straight into a wonderfully atmospheric market. Rüdesheim’s half-timbered houses, cobbled streets and festive decorations give it a storybook feel, and the market here had a lovely small-town warmth.
We sampled a few goodies as we wandered: glühwein, naturally, and the famous Rüdesheim coffee – a gloriously indulgent blend of hot coffee, Asbach brandy, sugar and whipped cream. Learning how it is made was an experience in itself (you can see the process in my reel here Instagram), and it is the perfect drink for thawing out cold fingers. I
The markets are not just about food and drink. Stalls overflow with gift ideas, from crafts and decorations to more unusual finds. I even discovered a tool stall, ideal for shopping for “the man who has everything.”
Spotting a cable car quietly gliding overhead, we made a spontaneous decision to hop on and see where it led. A few minutes later we were standing at the Niederwalddenkmal monument, high above the vineyards, enjoying spectacular views for miles in every direction. On such a beautiful day, it was a reminder of how scenic the Rhine valley is in any season. We rode back down, strolled through the market one last time, warmed ourselves with a festive eggnog and returned to the ship.

The Rhythm of a Christmas Markets River Cruise
The beauty of this kind of itinerary is its gentle, satisfying rhythm: sail, explore, warm up, repeat.
Mornings often began with a soft glide into a new destination, church spires and red-roofed houses appearing through the winter mist. After breakfast, it was time to layer up, grab a hat and gloves, and follow the sound of carols and the glow of fairy lights ashore.
Every town and city had its own personality, but there were constants that felt comfortingly familiar:
- Christmas trees and fairy lights in every square
- Wooden huts selling everything from handcrafted decorations to woollen hats
- The comforting scent of glühwein, roasted chestnuts and spiced gingerbread
- Big smiles from stallholders, even on the coldest days
Between markets, there was always time for a wander through the old town, a peek inside a cathedral or a café stop for hot chocolate or coffee and cake. Back on board, A-ROSA Clea felt like a cocoon: warm, welcoming and always ready with a late lunch or snacks, plus plenty of space to thaw out and share stories from the day.
One evening, we had an early dinner so we could make the most of Mainz by night. Visiting the markets after dark, when the lights sparkle brighter and the music drifts over the square, feels like stepping into a Christmas card.

Locks at Midnight, Frankfurt by Day & Legends on the Lorelei
Some of my favourite moments were the quieter ones. One night, unable to sleep, I headed up to the top deck just in time to watch us pass through enormous river locks at midnight. Standing there in the cold, watching the ship slowly rise and fall between the concrete walls, felt strangely mesmerising.
The next morning we woke in Frankfurt, where the markets are spread across several different squares. This meant we could hop from one to another, each with its own atmosphere, layout and foodie temptations. That is one of the joys of these trips: every market has its own quirks and regional specialities, so you never feel as though you are seeing exactly the same thing twice.
As we cruised along the Rhine between stops, we passed castle after castle perched on the hillsides. Although this particular voyage was all about Christmas markets, I was reminded how beautiful this stretch of river is in summer too. (I have actually sailed this part of the Rhine before on a different river cruise, and you can read my full Castles of the Rhine blog for a sunny-season perspective.)
We also sailed past the famous Lorelei Rock, and our guide shared the legend of the German mermaid Lorelei: a beautiful maiden who supposedly waited here for her lover. When he never returned, she threw herself from the rock and became a siren, luring sailors to their doom with her song. It added a wonderfully mythic note to our winter journey.

Koblenz, Jacuzzis & Our Cologne Farewell
We arrived in Koblenz and moored close to the cable car that carries visitors up to the fortress above the town. After exploring the markets and enjoying yet more festive food and drink, we returned to the ship and decided it was finally time to make full use of the top-deck jacuzzi.
Wearing our Christmas Santa hats and armed with glasses of prosecco, we sat in the steaming water watching the world go by. It was one of those “is this really my life?” moments and a memory that will always make me smile.
Our cruise ended back where it began, in Cologne. Once again we put our luggage into storage at the station and spent our final day market-hopping, revisiting favourites and discovering corners we had missed the first time around. As daylight faded and the cathedral lit up against the evening sky, it was hard to believe how much we had packed into just a few days.
Eventually, it was time to collect our bags, return to the airport and fly home, spirits lifted and cases slightly heavier with Lebkuchen, stollen and souvenir mugs.

Markets Made for Storybooks
Across the itinerary, every stop offered its own version of festive magic, whether it was a grand city square lined with stalls or a smaller, more intimate market nestled beside a church.
Wherever you go, you can expect:
- Traditional wooden chalets selling ornaments, candles, toys and local crafts
- Stalls piled high with Lebkuchen, stollen, biscuits and sugared nuts
- Local specialities like sausages, raclette, grilled cheese breads and sweet pastries
- Craft stands with glass baubles, hand-carved wooden toys and delicate paper stars
- Plenty of spots to stand with a mug of glühwein or hot chocolate, warming your hands as the lights twinkle overhead
One of the biggest advantages of travelling by river is that you can visit several markets in just a few days, without ever feeling rushed. It is a dream for anyone who loves Christmas shopping, photography or simply soaking up festive atmosphere.
