A Mythic Three‑Night Escape at Cape Sounio, A Grecotel Resort to Live

Rebecca Ashworth on 11 May 2026

There are places you visit, and there are places that stay with you. Cape Sounio, A Grecotel Resort to Live, sits firmly in the second category. Perched on the Attica Riviera, wrapped in pine forests and olive groves, this elegant resort gazes directly across the water to the legendary Temple of Poseidon. It is a scene that has stirred travellers and poets for centuries, and for three nights it became the backdrop to my own Greek escape. From the moment I arrived, there was a sense that this stay would blend ancient myth, effortless luxury and deep relaxation in a way that only Greece can.

First Impressions: Where Land, Sea and Legend Meet

The approach to the resort is already an experience: the road hugging the coastline, the Aegean glittering to one side, and ahead, the marble columns of the Temple of Poseidon crowning the headland. Cape Sounio feels quietly secluded yet impossibly dramatic, a place where you are constantly aware of the sea, the sky and that iconic silhouette on the horizon. The resort itself unfolds like a contemporary Greek village: low‑rise bungalows and villas tucked into the hillside, paths meandering through fragrant gardens, and glimpses of turquoise pools and golden coves below. It feels exclusive but never formal, luxurious yet relaxed, which set the tone perfectly for the days to come.

Warm Mediterranean Welcome

My stay began exactly as every holiday should: with a delicious, relaxed lunch overlooking the sea. I was welcomed with a light Mediterranean, family‑style spread at The Aegean Grill Restaurant. Platters of fresh salads, grilled vegetables, local cheeses and perfectly cooked fish arrived at the table, designed for sharing and lingering over. Paired with chilled refreshments and those endless Aegean views, it was the ideal way to decompress after travelling and to slip immediately into holiday mode.

Easing Into Resort Life

After lunch, there was time to wander the resort and get my bearings. I strolled past shimmering pools, discovered quiet corners for reading, and walked down towards the private coves that hug the shoreline. The air was scented with pine and sea salt, and everywhere I turned there was another postcard‑perfect view of the bay.

Rooms and suites at Cape Sounio are scattered thoughtfully across the hillside, many with beautiful outdoor spaces and some with private pools. The whole place feels designed to help you slow down, breathe deeply and simply enjoy the setting.

Evening: A Soft Start Under The Stars

As evening approached, the sky began to blush pink and gold. The Temple of Poseidon, poised above the sea, slowly turned from ivory to amber, then to a soft glow as the sun slipped below the horizon. It is, without exaggeration, one of the most magical sunset views in the Mediterranean.

Day 2: Poolside Bliss, Aegean Flavours and Wine Under the Stars

Day two was all about slowing right down and enjoying the facilities. I settled into a comfortable lounger by the pool and let the day unfold at its own pace: a dip in the sparkling water, a book in hand, the occasional wander to appreciate the views. The resort’s design means you never feel crowded; instead, there is a sense of space and serenity that is rare and very welcome. For families, there are dedicated areas and facilities to keep children happy and entertained, while couples will find plenty of quiet corners and more intimate spots to relax together. It is a resort that manages to be both family‑friendly and incredibly romantic.

By midday, it was time for a colourful, refreshing buffet lunch at the Cape Sounio restaurant The spread was a celebration of Mediterranean flavours: vibrant salads, seasonal vegetables, grilled meats and local specialities, all beautifully presented and perfect for a light yet satisfying midday pause.

Evening: Wine Tasting & Dinner At The ROC Club

The tasting was a wonderful introduction to Greek wines, from crisp whites kissed by sea breezes to rich, characterful reds. Tasting them while learning about the regions and grape varieties added a lovely sense of discovery and connection to the country. Dinner at The ROC Club continued the theme of relaxed indulgence. Think chic yet comfortable setting, beautifully plated dishes and that unmistakable Greek hospitality that makes you feel truly looked after. It felt like an evening in a private members’ club by the sea, with excellent food and company to match.

Day 3: Wellness, The Open Sea and a Farewell To Remember

My final full day began with a  Breakfast at the Yali Waterfront Restaurant. The setting could not have been more uplifting: right on the water’s edge, with the sea almost lapping at your feet. Breakfast was thoughtfully curated with fresh, energising ingredients: think seasonal fruits, light dishes, nourishing grains and plenty of options to suit a health‑conscious start to the day.

A Luxury Boat Trip On The Aegean

The afternoon delivered one of those travel moments you know you will remember. Stepping aboard, the coastline of Cape Sounion slipped into view from a new perspective. The resort, the pine‑clad hills, the Temple of Poseidon perched high on the cape: all framed by cobalt seas and endless horizon. With the sun on your skin and the sea breeze in your hair, time seems to stretch in the loveliest way. There is something incredibly special about seeing this historic coastline from the water. It brings home just how timeless this corner of Greece is, and why it has enchanted travellers for millennia.

Evening: Farewell Celebration Dinner

As the sun began its slow descent over the Aegean for the final time, we gathered for a Farewell Celebration Dinner at The Restaurant it was a fitting finale: elegant table settings, warm lighting, beautifully crafted dishes and glasses raised in gratitude for the days we had shared. The atmosphere was both celebratory and slightly wistful, as farewells often are, but above all it felt like a final embrace from Cape Sounio itself. With the Temple’s silhouette glowing once more in the distance, it was impossible not to feel that we were part of something quietly extraordinary.

Why Cape Sounio Stands Out

Looking back on my three‑night stay, what makes Cape Sounio, A Grecotel Resort to Live, so memorable is the perfect fusion of elements:
