Why September is the smart traveller’s favourite month to get away
If you love the idea of escaping just as everyone else is settling back into normal (read: school) life, September is your secret weapon. If you’re able to, it’s the month savvy travellers quietly choose year after year, especially if you are a busy couple who wants luxury, space and a truly tailor-made escape without the peak-season chaos. When I design September holidays, I am always struck by how much more relaxed everything feels. You are not fighting the crowds, you are not paying the highest prices of the year, and yet in many destinations you are still enjoying gorgeous weather and all the benefits of the season.
You travel after the rush
By September, schools are back and the families have mostly gone home. Airports feel calmer, hotel pools are quieter and that sunset cocktail suddenly feels a lot more indulgent when you are not jostling for a table.
This is especially true for long-haul and multicentre trips. Whether you are combining a city with a beach, or adding a few nights on safari to a longer itinerary, travelling after the peak summer rush gives you room to breathe. You can take things at your own pace, linger longer in your favourite places and really enjoy that sense of escape you have worked so hard for.
You often get better value for luxury
I never describe my holidays as “cheap”, because that is not what I do. But I am passionate about making sure you get real value from your trip, and September can be a sweet spot.
Many five-star hotels and boutique lodges start to ease away from peak-season pricing once the school holidays end. They might even be closing by October. That means you can often upgrade your room type, extend your stay by a night or two, or add special touches like private transfers or memorable experiences, all while keeping within a sensible budget for a premium escape. It is about making your money work harder for you, not cutting corners.
The weather can be just right
For lots of destinations, September sits in that Goldilocks zone: warm, sunny and settled, but not uncomfortably hot. In parts of Africa, it is a beautiful time for safari, with dry conditions that make wildlife viewing rewarding and days that are pleasantly warm rather than scorching. In many long-haul beach destinations, seas are still warm and evenings are balmy enough for al fresco dinners without the intensity of midsummer heat.
This is where a bespoke, tailor-made approach really matters. I look at your exact dates, your tolerance for heat, and the kind of experiences you want, then match you with the regions and properties that are at their best at that time.
You can slow down and truly switch off
Because September is outside the main holiday rush, there is a different energy to travelling then. It feels more grown-up, more considered, more “for you”. As a busy couple, you probably spend most of the year spinning plates and squeezing everything into your diary. A stress-free September escape gives you time back that you simply cannot buy in any other way.
Whether it is a multicentre trip that blends a buzzing city with a secluded beach hideaway, or a safari followed by a few days in a boutique coastal retreat, I will shape everything around how you want to feel: unhurried, restored and completely looked after.
If you would like to take advantage of that smart September sweet spot, I can create a bespoke, long-haul itinerary that fits your calendar and your wish list perfectly. Contact me to start planning your September escape and I will take care of every detail for you.
