A Day In The Life Of A ‘New’ Travel Counsellor

People often imagine this job as simply “booking holidays” and so did I, until I started my own travel business. The reality is a lot more personal, varied and honestly, a lot more rewarding than that. As more enquiries come in, I’m finding that I’m part travel designer, part problem‑solver, part travel detective and part safety net for my clients.

So I thought I’d give you a little peek behind the scenes of a typical day in my life, as I build my travel business.

Morning: Gym, Coffee, Socials & Networking

My day usually starts with an early morning visit to the gym. I firmly believe to be able to give your best, you have to look after yourself and be your best. I then get back, have breakfast and a coffee, whilst checking my calendar.

As I am focusing on letting people know about my new business, attending local networking events appear regularly, along with time blocked out to research and write blogs, film short videos and post to various social media channels.

I then move on to new enquiries. This could be: 

A family planning a first long‑haul adventure.  A couple looking for a special New Year trip. Friends wanting a villa or city break.

I pick up the phone or arrange a video call, because hearing their voices and asking questions in real time is where the magic starts. I want to know not just where they think they want to go, but how they like to spend their days, what “relaxing” really means to them, and what a perfect trip would feel like.

Late Morning: Turning Ideas Into Tailor‑Made Plans

Once I have their brief, I dive into designing options.

This is where I draw on -

The huge amount of destinations, tours and resorts available to me.  Trusted hotel and villa partners.  The little details that make a big difference, like flight times, transfer types and room locations.

I am not just finding “a hotel”. I am asking: 

Is this the right part of the island or city for these clients? 

Will this room type work for a family with a toddler and a teenager? 

Is there enough to do nearby for a ten‑night stay?

I put together one or two carefully chosen options rather than pages of random links. Then I talk my clients through the pros and cons so they can make a clear, confident choice without feeling overwhelmed.

Afternoon: Admin, Learning & Advising

Afternoons are often a mix, which includes -

Checking and answering emails.

Catching up on further training – compliance, online security, changes in various destinations around the world.

Keeping an eye on peoples travel issues and questions on social media and helping out where I can.          

And then there will be the surprises. Travel is wonderful, but real life still happens: delays, strikes, illness, missed connections. When things go wrong, clients do not have to sit on hold for hours with a call centre or figure it out alone. They can message me, and I will get to work on new plans, keeping them updated so they feel supported rather than stranded.

Evening: Finding out about more about destinations, cruises, resorts, etc.

Towards the end of the day, I often: 

Start researching into different parts of the world and what they have to offer. Who can help me in that area should I need them, to put the most amazing, unforgettable trips together

I love this part, because I find out stuff that helps me to plant those little seeds, for your next adventure.

More Than Just Bookings

Being a Travel Counsellor is not a 9‑to‑5, and it is not just about transactions. It is about relationships.

I get to know families as they grow, couples as they celebrate milestones, and solo travellers as they gain confidence and tick off bucket‑list dreams. My role is to take away the stress and uncertainty of planning, so all that is left for my clients is the excitement, the countdown and the memories.
