Is A Cruise Right For You?

If you picture cruising as huge ships, crowded buffets and setseat dining, you are only seeing a tiny part of the picture. Modern cruises come in many different shapes and sizes: ultraluxury yachts, intimate river ships, adventurous expedition vessels and brilliantly equipped family resorts at sea.

The real question is not “Do I like cruises?” but “Is there a style of cruising that fits how I like to travel?” Here is my guide to four very different types of cruise, and what kind of traveller they tend to suit.

UltraLuxury Ocean Cruises: Floating Boutique Hotels

If you love beautiful hotels, attentive service and the feeling that everything is quietly taken care of, an ultraluxury cruise could be your happy place.

What it feels like: Think refined rather than flashy - smaller ships, elegant suites, high stafftoguest ratios and excellent food. Many ultraluxury lines include drinks, speciality dining and gratuities, so life on board feels easy and unhurried. You are not queuing for sun loungers or fighting for space at the buffet.

Who it suits:  Couples who enjoy fine dining, wine and relaxed evenings. Guests who appreciate space, privacy and personal service and travellers who want to see multiple destinations without constant packing and unpacking

Why consider it: An ultraluxury cruise can be surprisingly good value when you factor in everything that is included - accommodation, meals, drinks, entertainment and waking up somewhere new most days. If you already tend to book fivestar hotels and private transfers, this style of cruise simply brings that level of comfort to the water.

If you're curious, I can help match you with the right ship and itinerary, from the Mediterranean and Caribbean to more farflung routes, depending on how polished or laidback you like your luxury.

Expedition Cruises: Adventure With A Soft Landing

If your idea of a perfect trip involves wildlife, remote landscapes and a real sense of discovery, have a look at expedition cruising.

What it feels like: These ships are typically smaller, built to explore places like Antarctica, the Arctic, the Galápagos or lesservisited parts of the world. On board, you will find naturalists, photographers and expert guides giving talks and leading landings or Zodiac trips.

Accommodation and dining are far more comfortable than the word “expedition” might suggest, especially on the newer vessels, but the focus is firmly on the destination rather than nightlife.

Who it suits : Nature lovers and keen photographers. Travellers who value experiences over formality. Guests who like the idea of learning as they go, with talks and briefings

Why consider it: Expedition cruises often reach places that would be extremely difficult or impossible to visit independently, and do so in a controlled, responsible way. You can kayak between icebergs, watch penguin colonies from a respectful distance or sail deep into fjords, then return to a warm shower, good dinner and comfortable bed.

If you are unsure which region, season or level of “expedition” would work best for you, I can talk you through the options and physical demands of each trip so you choose something that fits your comfort level.

River Cruises: Slow Travel Through The Heart Of A Destination

If you like the idea of unpacking once, then drifting gently between historic towns and cities, river cruising is a beautiful way to travel.

What it feels like: River ships are much smaller than ocean liners. Life on board is unhurried and sociable, with everchanging scenery right outside your window. You glide straight into the heart of destinations along rivers like the Rhine, Danube, Douro, Seine, Nile or Mekong, often docking within walking distance of the centre.

Who it suits:  Couples or friends who enjoy culture, food, wine and gentle exploration. Travellers who prefer smaller ships and calmer waters. Those who like organised but not rigid sightseeing, with time to wander independently.

Why consider it: A river cruise is essentially a floating boutique hotel that takes you from one city or village to the next while you sleep or enjoy a glass of wine on deck. Excursions are often included, and the atmosphere is more “elegant relaxed” than formal.

There are options for different energy levels too: from leisurely walking tours and wine tastings to more active excursions like cycling between stops. I can help you choose the right river, ship and cabin type, and advise on the best time of year for each route.

Family Cruises: Floating Resorts That Keep Everyone Happy

For families and multigenerational groups, cruising can be a brilliantly straightforward way to holiday together, provided you choose the right ship.

What it feels like: Familyfriendly ships are like resorts at sea: multiple pools, kids clubs, teen hangouts, cinemas, water slides, sports courts and shows. There is always something to do, but you can dip in and out as you wish. Meal times are flexible and casual options are plentiful, so no one is going hungry.

Who it suits:  Families who want builtin entertainment and childcare options. Grandparents, parents and kids travelling together. People who like a sociable atmosphere with lots going on.

Why consider it: A family cruise solves a lot of holiday puzzles. Children and teens have structured activities and places to make friends.  Adults can enjoy some quiet time knowing the kids are looked after.  You see multiple destinations but only unpack once.

The key is matching your family to the right ship size and style. Some are highenergy with big water parks and bright venues, others are more understated. I can help you find a balance between facilities, itineraries and budget, as well as the best cabin configurations for your group.

So… Is A Cruise Right For You?

A cruise will not suit everyone, and that is absolutely fine. It might not be ideal if you strongly dislike shared spaces, prefer to stay rooted in one place, or want complete spontaneity from day to day.

However, it could be a brilliant choice if you:

Enjoy the idea of unpacking once and waking up somewhere new most days

Like having a blend of relaxation, dining and entertainment close at hand

Are curious about seeing more of a region in one trip

Appreciate having logistics and transfers taken off your plate

My role is to cut through the noise and help you decide, honestly, whether a cruise fits how you like to travel. If it does, I can then match you to the right style: ultraluxury, expedition, river, family, or even a mix over different holidays.

If you are cruisecurious and wondering which type might suit you, tell me:

Who you would travel with

When you are thinking of going

The sort of atmosphere you enjoy on holiday

I will come back with a small selection of cruise ideas tailored to you, so you can see whether your next adventure belongs on the water.

I hope this inspires you to look at travel and adventure across water.
