CAPTIVATING CAPPADOCIA: CAVE SUITES, SCENIC VALLEYS & A TV-FAMOUS RETREAT

Dreaming of discovering Cappadocia. Discover it all with stays in Göreme, Ürgüp and Uçhisar with cave suites, valley walks, wineries and culture plus a standout stay at Argos in Cappadocia.

Exploring Cappadocia last September was all I'd hoped for and more. Warm, sunny days, cool evenings and clear skies created the perfect conditions for walking, wine tasting and soaking up the magic of this other-worldly landscape. Basing ourselves in Goreme, Uchisar and Urgup each town had its own charm and we were able to experience all that this incredible region of Turkey has to offer,

GOREME: IN THE HEART OF THE FAIRY CHIMNEYS

Goreme is Cappadocia’s bustling hub, wrapped in honey-coloured rock formations and fairy chimneys. It is the best base if you want to be right in the middle of the valleys and activity, with cafes, restaurants and shops all within easy reach.  There is also easy access to the Goreme Open Air Museum here - a must see.

Staying at Cappadocia Cave Suites in Goreme offered that quintessential cave hotel experience, but with plenty of comfort.  The standout feature here was the hotel’s terraces with wonderful views over the fairy chimneys and of course with those incredible sunrise views of the hot air balloons.

From Goreme, we explored some of the most iconic landscapes on foot:

ROSE VALLEY: walking the trails as the late afternoon light turned the rocks dusky pink. The soft, undulating paths, cave churches and viewpoints made this one of the most photogenic walks of the trip.

LOVE VALLEY: famous for its unusual rock formations, this valley was both fun and beautiful, with sweeping views and a real sense of space.

PASSABAG (MONKS VALLEY): here the fairy chimneys are at their most dramatic. Tall, sculpted pillars rise from the ground, some with multiple “hats” of rock, creating a surreal skyline.

GOREME OPEN AIR MUSEUM: a must-see. This complex of rock-cut churches and monasteries, many still decorated with vivid frescoes, gives you a real sense of the region’s history and spirituality.

To round off one evening, we joined a sunset ATV tour through Rose Valley. As the sun dipped, the rocks glowed shades of orange, pink and gold, and the thrill of driving the ATVs through the dusty tracks added a sense of adventure.

URGUP: REFINED EVENINGS AND CULTURAL HIGHLIGHTS

After Goreme’s buzz, Urgup felt more refined and relaxed. It has a slightly more local, traditional feel, with elegant stone houses, wine bars and restaurants that are perfect for lingering over dinner.  I’d say that Urgup has a sophisticated yet authentic atmosphere, ideal for couples and great for evenings out in wine bars and traditional restaurants

Our stay at Kayakapi Premium Caves in Urgup was like stepping into a beautifully restored historic village, with layers of history built into the stone.  Here there are lovingly restored cave and stone rooms with a real sense of heritage.  Its elevated position offers panoramic views over Urgup and the surrounding landscape.

From Urgup, we focused on culture and atmosphere:

WHIRLING DERVISHES: this performance in Urgup was quite a moving experience. The combination of music, ritual and the graceful turning of the dervishes offered a glimpse into the spiritual traditions of the region.

KOCABAG WINERY: a perfect morning sampling Cappadocian wines (who knew?). Tasting local varietals while looking out over the volcanic landscapes brought home how closely the wine is linked to the land itself.

UCHISAR: CLIFF-TOP CALM AND A TV-FAMOUS HIGHLIGHT

Our final stop, Uchisar, is perched high above the valleys, crowned by its dramatic rock castle. It felt peaceful and romantic, with a slower pace and sweeping views in every direction.  Uchisar has a quiet, more exclusive atmosphere with direct access to walking trails so a perfect finale to our trip.

Uchisar Castle Views

The undisputed highlight of our accommodation was Argos in Cappadocia, famed from the “Beyond the Lobby” TV programme. Experiencing it in person genuinely lived up to the reputation.

Argos is a beautifully designed property built into a historic hillside village, full of tunnels, terraces and secret corners.  Rooms and suites feel unique here, many with cave elements, stone arches and spectacular valley views and an atmosphere of discrete luxury: attentive service, superb food and a real sense of place.  The outdoor spaces are just magical and perfect for watching the changing light on the valleys and the balloons drifting by.

Argos in Cappadocia Sunrise

Our stay at Argos turned a wonderful trip into something truly special. It felt like being part of a story rather than just checking into a hotel.  And of course with its wonderful pool with valley views it was great for some rest and relaxation at the end of our trip.

From Uchisar we embraced more of Cappadocia’s iconic walking.  We walked down Pigeon Valley, following the trail through soft rock formations and old dovecotes carved into the cliffs. It was a peaceful, scenic route, with ever-changing views back up to the castle and down towards Goreme.

We also visited Avanos, known for its pottery and its riverside setting. Wandering through workshops and seeing traditional techniques in action added a lovely artisan dimension to the trip.

WHY SEPTEMBER WORKED SO WELL

Travelling in September was a masterstroke. Days were warm and sunny, ideal for long walks in the valleys without the intense heat of midsummer. Evenings were pleasant for sitting out with a glass of local wine, and overall the region felt relaxed but not overcrowded.
