How to Plan a Golden Triangle Trip in India That Actually Works

How to plan a Golden Triangle trip that works: route, timings, season, hotels and the mistakes to avoid, from an expert who has just done it.

The Golden Triangle links Delhi, Agra and Jaipur and is India's classic first trip. To get it right, travel between October and March, build in rest, use private transport and expert guides, choose hotels that suit you, and add a wildlife or village stop so you aren't just rushing between monuments. I've just done an extended Golden Triangle, from Delhi to Ranthambore, Jaipur, Agra and the Chambal valley and back to Delhi in nine nights. Here's what I'd tell anyone planning the same.

What is the Golden Triangle?

It's the classic circuit between Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, taking in forts, palaces, bazaars and the Taj Mahal. It's popular because it packs a huge amount of India's history into one trip, and because it works well as a first visit.

How long do you need?

A week is enough for the classic route. I did nine nights because I added Ranthambore for tigers and the Chambal valley for a quieter stop. However, you can take a much more relaxed approach or speed it up. If you add Kerala afterwards, as I did, you're looking at two weeks or more.

What does a good route look like?

Distances are big, so the order and timings matter. This is the route I did, with approximate road times but we had a detour to Chambal which suits a specific type of client loooking for either wildlife or undiscovered India - I wouldn't recommend it to everyone.

  1. Delhi to Ranthambore - 5.5 hours
  2. Ranthambore to Jaipur - 3.5 hours
  3. Agra to Chambal - 1.5 hours
  4. Chambal to Agra station - 1.5 hours
  5. Agra to Delhi by Vande Bharat train - 2 hours 15 minutes

Times vary with traffic. Our guide enjoyed telling us that it would be 5.5. hours "in India time" which meant it could be longer.

When is the best time to visit?

October to March is widely seen as the best time for the Golden Triangle, with comfortable weather for sightseeing. Tigers at Ranthambore are most likely from March to May. I travelled in September and it worked, but I set my expectations on wildlife accordingly. We didn't see a tiger, though we saw a leopard, deer, antelope, a mongoose, an owl and fresh footprints.

Seven mistakes to avoid

  • Doing it alone - a good guide will set the right pace for you, give you the information you want and open experiences to you that you wouldn't believe. A good guide is invaluable.
  • Cramming it in - I was exhausted by the end of the first part of my trip. Build in rest and treat long drives as part of the journey.
  • Forgetting paperwork - There's unstable Wi-Fi on arrival at Delhi airport, so print your visa, arrival card and any forms, and check India's current entry requirements.
  • Picking the wrong hotel for you - A big city hotel can feel corporate, a heritage hotel has character and quirks, and a tented camp is on another level. Choose for who you are.
  • Booking the wrong safari vehicle - Go for a small gypsy of four to six seats, not the big 16-seat bus, which can't pass other buses and waits a long time for small sightings.
  • Planning the Taj for a Friday - It's closed on Fridays.
  • Not understanding local customs - Cover your head at places of worship, treat memorials as memorials, and ask before photographing people.

What are the Taj Mahal tips?

Go at sunrise, but know it's still busy, and the sun doesn't rise behind it, so you'll be looking away from it for the sunrise itself. Many visitors dress up for photos, which is lovely to see. If you can, add a village walk the day before. Ours, through millet fields with the Taj appearing in the mist, made the day itself even more special. Alternatively, later on in the day also works when it can often be quieter.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Golden Triangle good for first-timers?

Yes, it's the classic first trip, especially with private transport and a good guide.

How long do I need?

About a week for the classic route. I'd allow nine nights if you add Ranthambore and Chambal.<

When is the Taj Mahal closed?

It's closed on Fridays, so plan around that.

How do you travel between the cities?

By private car and driver, plus the Vande Bharat train between Agra and Delhi, which takes about two hours fifteen minutes.

Is Ranthambore worth adding?

If wildlife matters to you, yes. Tigers are most likely from March to May. Out of season you'll still see plenty, just don't promise yourself a tiger.
