Planning a Trip to Sri Lanka? 8 Things You Need to Know First

Sara Dickenson on 01 May 2026

Sri Lanka is one of those destinations that sits on so many wish lists – and for good reason. Wildlife, culture, beaches, tea country, incredible food… it has everything. But here’s the truth: Sri Lanka isn’t a destination you can plan on the fly. I was lucky enough to spend 9 days in Sri Lanka and know that , done well, it’s one of the most rewarding, experience-led holidays you can take. Done badly, it can feel rushed, overwhelming and logistically tricky. If you’re considering a Sri Lanka holiday, these are the 8 things you need to think about before you go.

1. Getting the Pace Right (This Is Everything)

There is so much to see in Sri Lanka – which is exactly why pacing matters.

Trying to do too much is one of the biggest mistakes I see.

Long travel times between destinations, early starts for experiences, and the sheer variety of what’s on offer means you need to build in space to breathe.

The best Sri Lanka itineraries feel:

  • Balanced
  • Unrushed
  • Thoughtfully layered

This isn’t a “tick-list” destination — it’s one to experience.

2. The Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is indeed a year-round destination, but where you go at what time is key.

The island is governed by its monsoon seasons which affect different coasts at different times of year.

This means:

  • There’s always somewhere with great weather
  • But your route needs to be planned accordingly

Getting this wrong can impact your entire trip – getting it right means sunshine, calm seas and the best possible experience.

3. How Long Do You Need in Sri Lanka?

I always recommend a minimum of 10 days for Sri Lanka.

Anything less, and it becomes too rushed to enjoy properly.

Ideally:

  • 10–14 days allows for a well-paced itinerary
  • 14+ days gives you time to fully immerse yourself

Remember – this is a destination where the journey is part of the experience.

4. Should You Twin Sri Lanka with Another Destination?

Sri Lanka pairs beautifully with other destinations – particularly for those wanting a multi-centre luxury holiday.

The most popular combination?

Sri Lanka + The Maldives

  • Culture, wildlife and adventure in Sri Lanka
  • Followed by relaxation and luxury in the Maldives

It’s the perfect contrast and one I design often for honeymooners, families and milestone trips.

5. What to Wear in Sri Lanka (Dress Code Tips)

Sri Lanka is relaxed in many ways but there are important cultural considerations.

When visiting temples and sacred sites, you must:

  • Cover shoulders
  • Cover knees
  • Remove shoes

I always recommend packing:

  • Lightweight, breathable clothing
  • A scarf or shawl for easy cover-up
  • Comfortable footwear for exploring

It’s simple, but important to get right.

6. Tipping in Sri Lanka

Tipping is an expected and appreciated part of travel in Sri Lanka.

As a guideline:

  • Guide: around £10 per day
  • Driver: around £5 per day

These individuals play a huge role in your experience from navigating routes to sharing local knowledge so it’s always worth factoring this into your budget.

7. Full Moon Days (Poya Days)

Every full moon in Sri Lanka is a public holiday, known as a Poya Day.

They’re actually a lovely time to be there:

  • Local communities come together
  • Temples are particularly atmospheric
  • There’s a real sense of culture and tradition

However, it’s important to know that alcohol is not served anywhere on these days

With the right planning, this becomes part of the experience – not a surprise.

8. Getting to Sri Lanka

There are multiple ways to travel to Sri Lanka from the UK.

Options include:

  • Direct flights from London Heathrow
  • Routes that avoid the Middle East if preferred

Flight routes can vary depending on global events and airline schedules, so it’s important to choose the right option for your comfort and peace of mind.

Planning Sri Lanka Properly

Sri Lanka is one of those destinations where expert planning makes all the difference.

It’s not about booking a hotel and adding a few excursions, it’s about:

  • Building a route that flows
  • Matching experiences to your travel style
  • Balancing adventure with rest
  • Making the whole journey feel seamless
