Where to travel this autumn: slow mornings, softer sunshine and crowd‑free exploring Autumn is one of my favourite times to travel. From late‑summer warmth in southern Europe to city breaks wrapped in cosy layers and long‑haul winter sun, September to November is full of possibilities for couples, solo travellers and empty nesters who prefer to avoid the peak‑season rush.

September: softer light and late‑summer sun

Slow Mediterranean days
September is when much of southern Europe exhales. Temperatures ease, the sea is still beautifully warm and the beaches are far quieter. Think long lunches in Portugal, Sicily or Spain, exploring coastal towns in the cooler afternoon light and lingering over wine as the sun sets. If you are tempted by Greece, this is the time for quieter islands and more relaxed, low‑key stays.

Culture without the crowds
It is also a brilliant month for a USA or North Africa escape. Road trips in the States feel calmer once the summer holidays are over, and places like Morocco become far more comfortable to explore. For couples and solos, this is the moment for slower travel: walking tours, rooftop bars, boutique hotels and time to actually enjoy the museums and markets you skipped in the summer heat.

October: city breaks and gentle adventure

Cosy city weekends
October suits those who love atmosphere as much as sunshine. European favourites like Rome, Lisbon and Porto are cooler yet still lively, ideal for café‑hopping, gallery visits and evenings tucked into neighbourhood wine bars. Further north, cities like Stockholm or Copenhagen mix crisp air with warm interiors, perfect for solo travellers and couples who enjoy stylish hotels and good food.

Wildlife, culture and just‑right warmth
If you are craving something more adventurous, October works beautifully for safaris in parts of southern Africa or cultural journeys through Egypt. Days are warm rather than intense, which makes game drives and temple visits far more enjoyable. It is a great time for bucket‑list trips that still feel comfortable and unhurried.

November: winter sun and rich colour

Chasing the sun
As the UK turns grey, November is when winter‑sun destinations really shine. Think Thailand’s beaches as the rain eases, the welcoming warmth of Mexico during one of its most reliable weather periods. These are ideal options if you want to round off the year with blue skies, pools and a good book rather than another wet weekend at home.

Autumn colour & culture
If you prefer layers to swimwear, November also brings spectacular foliage and crisp days in parts of East Asia and North America. Picture temple gardens glowing with red maple leaves in Japan, or atmospheric walks followed by cosy dinners in cities like Boston or Montreal. For solo travellers and couples alike, it is a wonderfully photogenic time to explore.
