Has Travel lost its way?
Sometimes it feels as if travel has become a checklist of photo opportunities: The same viewpoints The same poses The same “must‑do” experiences, just in a different outfit
But when you strip away the filters and hashtags, most people are not really chasing photos. They are looking for something else entirely: connection, perspective, stories, and the feeling that their trip has meant something, both to them and to the places they visit. That is why I am increasingly drawn to partners whose whole model is built around experiences and impact, not just ticking off sights. G Adventures is a great example of this.
Their trips are designed so that your money has a real ripple effect in destination: they measure how much of what they spend to run a tour stays with local businesses and services, and their average “Ripple Score” is very high. In simple terms, that means the vast majority of what they spend on the ground is going into local hands, not leaking straight back out again.
They also work closely with social enterprises and community projects around the world, and for every day you spend on one of their trips they support tree‑growing initiatives that help restore ecosystems and livelihoods in the places you travel through. It is about long‑term community benefit, not just planting and walking away.
For me, this is where travel starts to find its way again:
- You are not just in a place, you are genuinely engaging with it
- Local people and businesses see real benefits from your visit
- Your trip becomes a story of exchange, not extraction
And you still get all the joy, excitement and discovery that made you want to travel in the first place.
With G Adventures there is also a style to suit different stages of life and comfort levels, including:
- 18‑to‑Thirtysomethings: For younger travellers who want small‑group adventures with a sociable feel and a bit more edge.
- Classic: The heart of their range, balancing comfort with authentic, local experiences and plenty of time to explore.
- Active & “next level up” adventures: For when you want more challenge, more activity or more remote destinations without losing the small‑group feel.
- National Geographic Journeys: Trips created in partnership with National Geographic, with a deeper storytelling and learning aspect, enriched local insights and special access experiences, while still travelling in small groups.
- Signature‑style, higher‑comfort trips: Itineraries that keep the local, immersive ethos but layer in more comfort and special touches along the way.
As your Travel Counsellor, my role is to help you cut through the noise and find the kind of trip that feels right for you:
- If you are tired of travelling just for the photo, but still want those “wow” moments
- If you care where your money goes and what it supports
- If you want to come home with more than just souvenirs
…then building an experience‑led itinerary with a partner like G Adventures can be a brilliant way to do it, matched carefully to your age, energy levels and comfort zone. If this has you wondering what a more meaningful, experiential trip could look like for you, I would love to chat through some ideas and find the style that fits you best.
