RIVER CRUISING: 7 Nights along The Danube
“I’ve been invited to experience a River Cruise!!” That was my Facebook update as I boarded the beautiful AmaVerde for 7 nights of scenic cruising along the Danube, from the cute Bavarian town of Vilshofen, on to Passau, Linz, Vienna, Bratislava and finishing in Budapest.
Now that I am home, I want to share what river cruising with AmaWaterways is really like and, importantly, which of my clients it will suit best. If you have been quietly curious about river cruising, or you have only ever considered big ocean ships, this is for you.
A Warm Bavarian Welcome: Mini Oktoberfest In Vilshofen
My river cruise started with the loveliest surprise: On our first evening we were treated to a mini Oktoberfest in Vilshofen: delicious, locally brewed Pilsner, big soft pretzels, games and music. It was such a fun, informal way to start the trip and immediately set the tone for the week: relaxed, very friendly, rooted in local traditions. Within a couple of hours people were chatting like old friends, and the ship already felt more like a small, sociable hotel than anything “formal” or stuffy.
Life On Board AmaVerde
AmaVerde is best described as a floating boutique hotel.
- Size: Around 150 guests, so you quickly recognise faces but it never feels crowded.
- Layout: Everything is close by. Your cabin, lounge, restaurant, sundeck are all just a short walk away.
- Cabins: Thoughtful storage, comfortable beds and wonderful floor‑to‑ceiling windows looking straight out over the river.
I loved waking up, pulling back the curtains and seeing a different view each morning: a pretty Bavarian town, a sweep of riverbank, or the skyline of Vienna or Budapest. It is such a simple pleasure, but it sums up the appeal of river cruising very well.
The atmosphere on board is relaxed and unpretentious. There are no endless announcements or pressure to join in. You can be as sociable or as low‑key as you like.
Beautiful, Historic Passau: Our First Stop
Our first call was Passau, the beautiful, historic “meeting point of three rivers”: the Ilz, the Inn and the mighty Danube. It is a very pretty place to stretch your legs, with cobbled streets and baroque churches, and it really gives you that “I am in Europe” feeling straight away.
From here, the choice of what to do was where AmaWaterways really impressed me - complimentary excursions today included a full day in Salzburg, a trip to nearby Czechia to tour the stunning Cesky Krumlov, walking and bike tours of Linz, and an afternoon distillery tour. That is just one day’s worth of option! A full itinerary of excursions, as well as free‑to‑use bicycles, are included on most European river cruises, and it makes the value very clear when you compare it to arranging everything independently.
This works brilliantly for:
- couples or friends who want different levels of activity
- clients who like some structure but still want freedom
- anyone who wants to see “more” without constantly packing and unpacking
Scenic Cruising Through The Wachau Valley
One of my favourite mornings of the whole week was our scenic cruising along the UNESCO‑listed Wachau Valley.
We spent the morning on deck, watching vineyard‑covered hills, tiny villages and castle ruins drift by. It feels almost like being inside a travel documentary. The pace is gentle, and the scenery is almost non‑stop.
We then stopped in beautiful Weissenkirchen and hiked up to the Dürnstein Fortress, with wonderful views back over the river and the ship. It is exactly the sort of experience I love to recommend to clients: a bit of gentle activity, a story behind the place and those big, memorable views.
And because the ship is right there on the riverbank, you wander back down, step on board and you are “home” again within minutes.
Evenings On Board: From Chef’s Table To Quiet Drinks
Back on AmaVerde, evenings have their own rhythm.
One highlight for me was being booked into The Chef’s Table for a 7‑course tasting menu. It is a lovely, intimate experience, with beautifully presented dishes and carefully paired wines. It feels special, but still relaxed, which is very much the AmaWaterways style.
On other nights we enjoyed multi‑course dinners in the main restaurant, always with regional touches linked to where we were sailing. Wine and beer are included at lunch and dinner, and there is a proper coffee station that quickly becomes everyone’s favourite spot.
After dinner there might be light entertainment, a talk, or local performers, but this is not a “big show and nightclub” sort of cruise. Evenings are more about conversation, music and a relaxed drink before heading back to your cabin.
For clients who want to come home feeling rested rather than exhausted, that is a big plus.
Waking Up In Vienna & Crossing Into Slovakia
Having cruised along the Danube through the night, we woke up this morning in beautiful Vienna. There is something very special about drawing the curtains and suddenly being in a grand European capital city, without an airport in sight. I opted for a very easy walking tour of the city - there were excursion options for every level of fitness.
Later that day, we enjoyed the sun deck and hot tub as we crossed over the former Iron Curtain into Slovakia. These are exactly the little memories river cruising is full of: quiet, scenic moments that stay with you long after you get home.
What A Typical Day Really Feels Like
Putting it all together, a “typical” day on a river cruise felt like:
- Morning: New view, breakfast, then your chosen complimentary excursion (walking tour, bike ride, or a full‑day trip).
- Lunchtime: Back on board for lunch as you sail, or a bit more time ashore.
- Afternoon: Scenic cruising, another short tour, or simply relaxing on deck watching the vineyards and villages slip by.
- Evening: Drinks in the lounge, dinner, then gentle entertainment or a quiet drink.
It is enough to keep you busy and engaged, but never so packed that you feel rushed. You always know that your comfortable cabin, friendly crew and familiar restaurant are just a few steps away.
Who River Cruising Really Suits
Having now experienced it for myself, there are some very clear client types I would happily recommend this style of trip to:
Couples who love city breaks and scenery: You can visit multiple, beautiful European towns and cities in one go, without ever needing to drag a suitcase across cobbles or navigate multiple airports.
Ocean cruisers who are ready for something more intimate: Great if you are curious about smaller ships, less fussed about big theatres and casino or are more interested in being right in the heart of the destinations.
Solo travellers who want company, not crowds: Shared tables mean you can be as sociable as you like, excursions give you an easy way to meet people and the crew quickly learn your name and keep a friendly eye out.
Grown‑Up Families & Friends: Everyone can choose excursions that suit their pace and interests, then come together in the evenings to share stories over dinner and drinks.
My Honest Verdict
After 7 nights on AmaVerde, my honest verdict is that river cruising is: beautifully scenic and genuinely relaxing, far more flexible and “active if you want it” than many people expect, excellent value when you factor in the excursions and bikes that are already included.
It will not be right for everyone, and that is absolutely fine, but for many of my clients who love Europe, history, food and wine, and who want an easier way to see more without the stress, it could be perfect.
If you can picture yourself sipping a locally brewed Pilsner at a Bavarian mini Oktoberfest one night, gliding past vineyards in the Wachau Valley the next, and waking up in Vienna or Budapest without ever packing a suitcase, then a river cruise might be exactly what you have been looking for.
If you would like to chat about whether river cruising would suit you, or you want to explore dates and options, just get in touch and I will be very happy to help plan your own journey.
