Ruka, Finland: The Perfect Place To Fall Back In Love With Skiing
Falling Back In Love With Skiing
After 12 years away from the slopes, I clipped my skis back on in Ruka, Finland, and instantly remembered why I love skiing so much. Ruka turned out to be the perfect place to rebuild my confidence as an “essentially beginner” skier, with the added magic of festive activities, Santa, reindeer and seriously good food. If you are thinking about a first ski trip, a return to skiing after a long break, or a family adventure in the snow, Ruka is a destination you should definitely have on your radar.
Where I Stayed: RukaTonttu Apartments
- I stayed at RukaTonttu Apartments, which I found to be a brilliant base.
- Ski in/ski out feel, with around a 2‑minute walk from your apartment to the ski lift
- That lift takes you up to the centre of Ruka, where you will find one of the main ski equipment shops
- If you need to collect your hire equipment, you can walk up in about 5 minutes (it is uphill), or simply hop on the ski bus, which is about 5 minutes from the apartments and takes you right in to the village.
- Cold plunge pool on the frozen lake if you're feeling brave!
- Amazing views across the frozen lake
In Ruka Village you will find:
- A selection of bars and restaurants
- A bowling alley
- A spa and other facilities
It has everything you need close by, without feeling overly big or hectic.
Why Ruka Works So Well For Beginners
Coming back to skiing after 12 years, I wanted somewhere that felt manageable rather than intimidating. Ruka was ideal.
- Gentle green runs were perfect while I found my feet again
- Once I felt more confident, there were some lovely blue and red runs that were easily manageable and easy to navigate.
- The pistes never felt overly crowded, which is a big plus when you are still building confidence
- There is enough variety that you are not stuck repeating the same runs over and over, but good to gain confidence on the same runs
For me, it struck a really nice balance: plenty for a beginner or cautious skier to enjoy, without feeling too limited.
Getting Around The Slopes
If you jump on the gondola from the main resort area by the ski shop, it takes you over to the other side of the piste where you will find:
- The main beginner green runs
- The meeting point for ski school by the Rosa & Rudolf Family Park
- A couple of restaurants, just right for a quick hot chocolate or coffee stop during the day - also a great place if you need to do some work and want to people watch on the piste!
- Another ski shop in case you need anything
- Snow tubing at Rosa & Rudolph Family Park
There are piste maps all around so you can easily find where you are, and what runs are suitable for you. It all feels very straightforward and user‑friendly, which is exactly what you want on a first or family ski holiday.
Sledding & Snow Fun Off The Piste
Ruka is also brilliant if you want snowy fun that is not just about skiing. You can easily access sledding and snow play:
- You can rent snow sledding equipment conveniently from Ruka village’s Piste rental shop (the one in the centre) Ruka East’s VuosselinPortti rental shop (the one at the other side near ski school meeting point)
- Snow gliders and sleds can be bought from RukaStore and Sale Ruka, which is ideal if you want your own for the whole trip.
- If you are staying at the Ski‑Inn which is located in the village 3 minutes walk to the RukaValley Ski Shop, they lend snow sleds free of charge from the reception of Ski‑Inn Hotel RukaVillage. There is a limited supply and no advance reservations, so it is very much first come, first served.
It is a lovely option for families and for non‑skiers who still want to be out in the snow and part of the fun.
Festive Magic: Reindeer, Huskies & Santa
Ruka is not just about skiing. It has that beautiful, wintry, festive feeling that is perfect for families and anyone who loves Christmas.
- Visit Santa’s Secret Cottage where the real Mr and Mrs Claus are!
- Meet reindeers and enjoy sleigh rides
- Try the husky experiences on a little reindeer and husky run, ideal for a pit stop between activities
- Head out on snowmobiles for a different kind of adventure in the snow
- Go ice fishing with a local!

I genuinely think Ruka is a great option for families who want to try skiing together for the first time but also want that magical winter wonderland atmosphere.
Chasing The Northern Lights
One of the absolute highlights of my trip was seeing the Northern Lights.
Right by RukaTonttu where I was staying there is a huge frozen lake, which is the perfect spot for aurora watching. People even come down from the centre at night just for that. So just being able to open your door and walk on to the lake I was left feeling really lucky. A few tips from my experience:
- Download an aurora tracker app so you can see when there is a good chance of activity and at what times - There are many apps and they all do the same thing so don't worry too much about which app to use.
- Sometimes the lights are faint to the naked eye but appear clearly on your photos, so keep your camera or phone handy
- Wrap up extra warm, as you will be standing still for a while

It is hard to put into words how special it feels standing on a frozen lake, watching the sky dance above you.
Saunas & Cold Plunges
At the apartments there is also a cold plunge pool, although I will admit I was not brave enough to try it because it was already cold enough for me outside! What I absolutely loved was that the apartments were kitted out with private saunas.
In Finland, it is actually more important to have a sauna at home than a big kitchen. Many homes and apartments sacrifice space in other areas to make room for a sauna. Having your own sauna to warm up in at the end of a cold day on the slopes feels like such a treat and a very Finnish experience.
Fondue, Comfort Food & Cosy Nights
In the main centre of Ruka is where I happily indulged my weakness for cheese fondue. I am an absolute sucker for it and it was so, so good. Alongside the fondue there are plenty of comforting dishes and cosy spots to enjoy an evening out, even though Ruka is quite a compact resort. It feels relaxed and welcoming rather than wild or overly busy.

What To Expect From Winter In Ruka?
- Winter in Ruka is cold and dark, with only around 2–3 hours of daylight each day.
- It sounds extreme, but in reality it just adds to the atmosphere.
- The pistes are all floodlit, so you can ski absolutely fine even when it is dark
- Locals are super friendly and used to helping visitors handle the conditions.
- Accommodation is comfortable and warm, with thoughtful touches like saunas making a big difference
- The sunsets, although early, are some of the most beautiful I have ever seen, with soft pastel skies over the snow
It feels like stepping into a snow globe: peaceful, glittering and completely different from everyday life.
