Why is everyone going to Japan?! 🇯🇵

Suvira Riza on 13 May 2026

It can’t just be me who feels like everyone is either going to Japan, has just got back from Japan, or is planning Japan next. Is it just a case of everyone jumping on a bandwagon? Travel trends are very hard to ignore in this job and so I HAD to go and check it out for myself! After just returning from two amazing weeks in Japan, I can confirm: the hype is real, and I’ve fully joined the fan club. 🙋🏽‍♀️🇯🇵

One country, countless holidays in one 🌸🏙️⛰️

Japan is the ultimate “pick your own adventure” destination:

  • 🌆 Get lost in neon-lit Tokyo streets, surrounded by skyscrapers and vending machines that sell absolutely everything
  • 🛕 Step into peaceful temples and shrines in Kyoto, where everything suddenly feels calm
  • 🛁 Soak in a steamy mountain onsen, surrounded by trees and fresh air
  • 🍢 Wander through lantern-lit alleyways full of tiny restaurants and sizzling street food

Japan can be:

  • A fast-paced city break
  • 🏯 A deep-dive into culture and history
  • 🍣 A full-on foodie pilgrimage
  • 🍃nature and wellness escape

That mix is why it works so well for families, friends, couples or solo travellers. You build the version of Japan that suits you.

“Wait… this is Japan?!” My trip highlight - Tropical Okinawa 🐠🏝️

Here’s something a lot of people don’t realise:

👉🏽  You can go snorkelling or diving in crystal clear water in Japan.

I spent part of my trip in Okinawa, a group of tropical islands off the SouthWest coast. Why?:

  • 🌊 Turquoise sea and soft white-sand beaches
  • 🐟 Colourful coral and tropical fish when you snorkel or dive
  • 😎 A slow, laid-back island vibe that feels miles away from the city buzz

Sounds great, right?!

And the best part: it’s only about a 2.5 hour flight from mainland Japan.

So you can:

➡️ Do your Tokyo / Kyoto / Osaka city and culture days
➡️ Then fly down to Okinawa to finish with beaches, snorkelling, diving and sunsets 🌅

If you’ve ever tried to choose between a “Japan trip” and a “beach holiday”… you really don’t have to. You can have both.

Okinawa, Japan

Theme parks: Japan does thrills very well 🎢🎡

If the kids (… or the big kids!) love theme parks, Japan is such a winner.

You’ve got:

  • 🎠 Tokyo Disney Resort: Disney magic with a Japanese twist, amazing parades and attention to detail
  • 🌊 Tokyo DisneySea: completely unique to Japan, beautifully themed, great for older kids and adults too
  • 🎮 Universal Studios Japan in Osaka: film-themed rides, big shows and that full “day of fun” energy
  • And plenty of smaller, quirkier parks and attractions dotted around

They slot perfectly into a wider trip and you can easily build an itinerary where you do:
temples one day, neon streets the next, and rollercoasters the day after.

As an ex-Disney World Cast Member, I genuinely mean it when I say that DisneySea is my new favourite Disney theme park!

Food: I didn’t have a single bad meal 🤤🍜🍣

Let’s talk about the food, because… wow.

On my entire trip, I did not have one bad meal. Not one. 🙌🏽

Osaka Dotonbori street food

Some highlights:

  • 🍜 Bowls of ramen that I never wanted to end
  • 🐓 Crispy katsu with mountains of rice
  • 🍣 Ridiculously good sushi in unassuming little places
  • 🥟 Street food and quick lunches that cost less than a fiver and still left me absolutely stuffed

You can eat brilliantly on a budget, splash out on special experiences, or mix the two (which I did!) Either way, food was an absolute highlight for me.

The weak yen: your money goes further 💴✨

Here’s another reason Japan is a great pick for us coming from the UK:

Right now, the yen is weak against the pound.

On my trip, that meant:

  • 💸 My spending money went a lot further than I expected
  • 🍽️ Delicious meals with huge portions for cheap
  • 🚆 Trains, snacks, drinks and little souvenirs often feeling very reasonably priced

Japan sounds like an expensive destination, but at the moment it can actually feel great value for what you get back in experiences.

If you’ve had Japan sitting on your “dream list”, this is a really good time to bump it up to “let’s do it” like I did.

Safe and easy to get around 🧳🚄

Japan doesn’t just feel exciting, it feels safe and incredibly well organised.

I accidentally managed to test the safe theory: I left my bag with our passports and all our cash in a busy restaurant (yes, even Travel Counsellors are not perfect travellers 😂), realised over an hour later, rushed back… and the staff had my bag safe waiting for me, with everything exactly as I’d left it. Nothing taken.

And day to day, it’s just so simple to move around:

    • 🚅 Trains & bullet trains are clean, comfortable and impressively punctual
    • 🔤 Lots of English signage in the main cities and stations

    And my favourite:

    • 🎒 Luggage forwarding Game changer!! You can send your big suitcases ahead to your next hotel, even between cities.

    So instead of:

    • 😖 Wrestling heavy bags through stations
    • 💪🏽 Lifting suitcases on and off trains
    • 🥵 Dragging everything across city streets

    You simply:

    • 🧾 Hand your main case over
    • 🚄 Travel light and stress-free
    • 🏨 Arrive at your next hotel… and your luggage is already there waiting for you

It makes multi-stop trips feel so much smoother, especially if you are:

    • Doing several cities
    • Travelling with children
    • Carrying ski gear, or (like me) have “I packed for every scenario” heavy luggage

    Different season, different Japan 🌸🍁❄️☀️

There isn’t just one “best” time to go. Each season gives you a different version of the country:

    • 🌸 Spring: cherry blossoms, soft light, dreamy parks and riversides
    • ☀️ Summer: festivals, fireworks and beach days in places like Okinawa
    • 🍁 Autumn: glowing red and gold leaves, perfect for photos and walks
    • ❄️ Winter: snowy mountains, ski resorts and outdoor onsens in the crisp air

You could visit more than once in different seasons and have completely different trips each time.

Something for everyone: families, couples, solo, luxury & budget 🧳💛

This is where Japan really shines. It’s incredibly easy to shape it to your travel style.

    Families 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

    • Safe, clean and easy to get around
    • 🎢 Theme parks, interactive museums, fun neighbourhoods, beaches, snow
    • 🍟 Plenty of simple, tasty food for younger or fussier eaters

    Couples 💕

    • 🏨 Boutique hotels and cool city boltholes
    • 🏡 Traditional ryokans with onsen baths for a special treat
    • 🌇 Romantic viewpoints, gardens and lovely evening strolls

    Solo travellers 🧍‍♀️

    • 🛡️ One of the safest-feeling solo destinations
    • 🚉 Great public transport and clear structure
    • 🛏️ Accommodation from capsule hotels to comfortable mid-range stays

    Budget to luxury 💸

    • 💼 Keep it clever with business hotels, trains and local eateries
    • 👑 Go all out with 5-star hotels, luxury ryokans and private experiences
    • 🔁 Or mix it: a few nights of “wow”, a few nights of “smart saving”

Whatever your style and budget, Japan can flex with you.

So… why is everyone going to Japan? ✈️

    Because right now Japan is:

    • 💴 Amazing value thanks to the weak yen
    • 🌸 Endlessly varied, from neon cities to quiet temples to tropical islands
    • 🎢 Packed with theme parks and fun days out, blending old and new so seamlessly
    • 🤝🏽 Safe, welcoming and incredibly easy to travel around
    • 🎒 Set up with little touches like luggage forwarding that make you think, “Why doesn’t everywhere do this?”
    • A place where you can have my kind of experiences:

I’ve just come back from two weeks there, including Okinawa, so all of this is very fresh.

If Japan is calling your name even a little bit, this is your nudge.
