Traditional little Gem
Thassos
Just back from beautiful Thassos and I’m a little bit in love with Greece’s “Emerald Island”
Just back from beautiful Thassos, An island wrapped in green, Thassos is often called Greece’s “Emerald Island” and it really does deserve the name. Instead of the dry, rocky landscape you might picture when you think of Greek islands, here the hills are thick with pine and olive trees. That lush green drops all the way down to soft, sandy bays and little rocky coves where the water is clear and calm. This is not an island that tries too hard. The beaches feel relaxed and welcoming rather than over‑organised. You can find your favourite spot for the day, wander into the sea for a swim, then amble up to a taverna for something simple and delicious. There is no rush, no need to be anywhere at a particular time.
One of my favourite memories was sitting on the deck of the ferry with a cheeky little beer, watching the seagull's chase us across the water, swooping alongside and down as the island slowly came into view. I've not seen anything like this before, so bizarre!
Beyond the beaches, there is a more traditional side to Thassos that is lovely to explore. Villages like Theologos sit tucked into the hills, with stone houses, narrow lanes and bursts of bright flowers. Wandering through, you get a sense of a slower, older Greece: life lived close to the land, with long conversations over coffee and a real feeling of community. The island is small enough to explore comfortably. Hire a car for a day, or use local buses, and you can circle much of the coastline, stopping wherever a view or a little cove catches your eye. Inland, there are walking trails through the pines and viewpoints where you can look out over both mountains and sea. It is not about ticking off big “must‑see” sights. Thassos is more about those small, personal memories.
If you’ve “done” some of the bigger Greek islands and fancy somewhere a little more low‑key but still easy and welcoming, Thassos could be a perfect next escape. It was a pleasure ......
