Miami: The City That Surprised Us

Vicky Taylor on 22 Aug 2024

Miami was meant to be “just a stopover”: a place to rest our heads between flights, perhaps grab a cocktail on South Beach and tick it off the list. What we didn’t expect was to fall a little bit in love with it. From our eco-chic base at 1 Hotel South Beach to exploring neighbourhoods in an open-top jeep, laughing our way across the Everglades and watching a dramatic storm roll in over the ocean, Miami turned into one of those destinations that stays with you. It was a reminder that some of the best travel moments happen in places you don’t necessarily expect to adore.

Miami is a patchwork of very different worlds: glittering high-rises downtown, the art deco lines and turquoise water of South Beach, creative enclaves, leafy residential streets and long strips of sand made for leisurely people watching. It is energetic and glamorous, yes, but also far more varied and characterful than I expected.

Staying at 1 Hotel South Beach

We based ourselves at 1 Hotel South Beach, an effortlessly stylish beachfront hotel that became a big part of why we enjoyed Miami so much.

1 Hotel South Beach

The hotel has a relaxed, nature-inspired design that feels very different to the traditional glitz you might associate with Miami. Think pale woods, greenery, light-filled spaces and an emphasis on sustainability. It feels luxurious, but not in a “try too hard” way.

Reasons I would recommend staying here:

  • Prime South Beach location: Right on the sand, so you can go from pool to ocean in a few steps, and still be close enough to stroll along the boardwalk and soak up the South Beach buzz.
  • Gorgeous pools and rooftop: Plenty of space to relax, with stylish loungers and views that really show off the coastline.
  • Calm, spacious rooms: A real retreat from the energy outside, with a soothing, natural palette and details that make you want to linger.
  • Food and drink with a sense of place: Fresh, beautifully presented dishes and a focus on local, seasonal ingredients fit perfectly with Miami’s coastal vibe.

For a city that can be full-on, 1 Hotel South Beach gave us that perfect balance: step outside and you’re in the middle of it all, step back in and you’re cocooned.

Tasting Miami: Neighbourhoods & People Watching

One of the joys of Miami is how easy it is to restaurant-hop your way through its different areas. Each neighbourhood has its own story and flavour, and you really feel that as you move around.

  • South Beach: Here, it is all about ocean views, palm trees and the art deco strip. We spent time just wandering, dipping in and out of cafés and watching the world go by. People watching on the beach is a full activity in itself: joggers, dog walkers, families, friends having impromptu games on the sand, all framed by those colourful lifeguard huts.
  • “Little Italy”–style dining spots: Away from the beachfront, you find pockets of cosy, atmospheric restaurants that feel like a slice of Europe in the tropics. Long, leisurely dinners with great pasta and wine became one of our favourite ways to wind down after busy days exploring.
  • Other districts: As you move between neighbourhoods, you find everything from laid-back local eateries to more polished, see-and-be-seen venues. It is the kind of city where you can go casual and low-key one night, then dial up the glamour the next.

Wherever we went, it felt like food and people watching went hand in hand. Sitting with a drink, watching the light shift over the ocean or the city skyline and simply taking it all in turned into some of our happiest Miami moments.

Exploring the City: Private Jeep Tour

To really get under Miami’s skin, we booked a private jeep tour with a local guide, and it was one of the best decisions we made.

Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the city. As we drove through different districts, he wove together stories about Miami’s history, its communities, architecture, art scene and how each area has evolved. We saw corners of the city we would never have stumbled across on our own: quiet residential streets, unexpected viewpoints, street art tucked away from the main routes.

Because the tour was private, it felt very personal. We could ask questions, linger where we were interested and skip anything that did not appeal. By the end, Miami felt far less like a glossy postcard and much more like a living, breathing city with layers and character.

An Adventure in the Everglades

No visit to this part of the world is complete without a trip out into the Everglades, and ours turned into a real highlight.

We headed out with a fascinating local guide who clearly lived and breathed the wetlands. As the Airboat skimmed across the water, he shared stories and facts about the ecosystem, its wildlife and the challenges it faces.

And of course, we met some of the Everglades’ most famous residents: the alligators, which our guide jokingly referred to as his “wild pets.” Seeing them up close in their natural habitat, was both thrilling and humbling. It really brought home how unique and fragile this landscape is.

Storm Watching & Beach Life

Miami’s beaches gave us more than sunshine and sea swims. One of the most memorable experiences was watching an incredible storm roll in from the ocean.

We were on the sand when the lifeguards began clearing the beach, their whistles cutting through the rising wind. The sky darkened, the waves picked up and the atmosphere changed from lazy holiday afternoon to powerful, dramatic theatre in a matter of minutes. Safely back from the shoreline, we stood and watched nature put on a show, lightning flashing over the water.

In between moments like that, there were the simple pleasures: long walks along the shore, dipping in and out of the water, sitting back with an ice cream and simply watching Miami life unfold around us.

All About Making Memories

What surprised us most about Miami was how many memories we came home with from what was meant to be “just” a short city break.

A stylish, beachfront base at 1 Hotel South Beach, cosy dinners in neighbourhood restaurants, a jeep tour that brought the city’s stories to life, laughing with a local out on the Everglades, beach days, storms and endlessly fascinating people watching: it all added up to a destination we would happily return to.

If you have ever thought of Miami as only nightlife and neon, I would encourage you to look again. With the right base, the right guide and the right pace, it can be a brilliant, multi-layered addition to a wider trip or a stand-alone city break packed with experiences.

And if you would like to design your own Miami adventure, I would love to help you shape it around the way you like to travel. Please contact me.
