Our Wild & Wonderful Family Adventure in Costa Rica

Vicky Taylor on 03 Aug 2024

Costa Rica had been on our family wish list for years: volcanoes, rainforest, wildlife and that laid-back “pura vida” way of life. When we finally made it there, it turned out to be even more magical than we had imagined: a trip full of sloths and tiny frogs, zip wires and yoga on a wild beach, lost luggage and the kindest people. We moved around the country, staying in four very special places: Finca Rosa Blanca, Tortuga Lodge & Gardens, Nayara Tented Camp and the Andaz in Papagayo. Each stop felt completely different, and together they gave us such a rich sense of what makes Costa Rica brilliant for families

Why Costa Rica is Fantastic for Families

Costa Rica is one big natural playground. It is incredibly easy to fill days with activities that feel like proper adventures, yet are very accessible for children and teens:

  • Wildlife at every turn: Sloths in the trees, monkeys crashing through the canopy, technicolour birds, and even turtles nesting on the beach. You barely need to try to find it, it is simply there.
  • Soft adventure, not extreme survival: Zip wiring through the rainforest, gentle hikes around volcanoes, boat trips through jungle canals, paddle boarding on lakes: all feel exciting but can be tailored to different ages and comfort levels.
  • Safe and welcoming: Costa Rica feels wonderfully friendly and easy to navigate as a family. The people we met were genuinely warm, patient and fantastic with children.
  • A focus on nature and sustainability: Many lodges and hotels are immersed in the landscape, with opportunities like tree-planting that help children understand how precious these ecosystems are and how they can give something back.

By the end of the trip, we had a whole collection of “remember when…” moments that we still talk about.

Costa Rica is compact, but it feels incredibly varied. In one trip you can wake up overlooking coffee plantations in the hills, kayak along jungle canals on the Caribbean side, hike at the foot of a volcano, then end with lazy days and sunsets on the Pacific coast. Our route did exactly that, and it worked beautifully for keeping everyone engaged.

Finca Rosa Blanca Coffee Farm and Inn, Santa Bárbara

We started our journey at Finca Rosa Blanca, a characterful little hotel set on a coffee farm in the hills above San José. It feels like the most gentle way to arrive in Costa Rica: cooler air, lush gardens and views that roll away over the valley.

What makes it special is the sense of place. You really feel embedded in the landscape: waking up to birdsong, wandering among coffee plants and learning how those little beans become your morning espresso. The rooms are individually styled and full of charm, and there is a lovely pool to help everyone reset after the flight. For families, it is a great first stop: calm, beautiful and just adventurous enough to get you excited about what is to come.

Tortuga Lodge & Gardens, Tortuguero

From the hills we headed for the Caribbean coast and into Tortuguero, often only reached by boat along winding jungle canals. Tortuga Lodge & Gardens sits right on the river, wrapped in rainforest and completely surrounded by nature. It feels wonderfully remote in the best possible way.

Days here were all about wildlife. We watched turtles laying their eggs on the beach at night, listened for howler monkeys, spotted sloths and were guided to the tiniest frogs that we would absolutely have missed on our own. The lodge is set up for exploring, with boats, kayaks, walking trails and knowledgeable guides who bring the whole ecosystem to life for children and adults alike.

It is also where we had one of those unforgettable travel stories. My luggage went missing in Miami and did not make it to Costa Rica with us. For the first few days I lived in my son’s and husband’s clothes, resigning myself to a very minimalist travel wardrobe. Then, one day at Tortuga, my suitcase simply appeared as if by magic, sitting on the riverbank of this remote lodge. I have never hugged a suitcase before, but that one got a proper embrace. Since that moment, I never travel without Apple AirTags.

Nayara Tented Camp, Arenal Volcano National Park

Nayara Tented Camp was our absolute highlight and a place I would return to in a heartbeat. Our tented suite was hidden deep within the rainforest, the kind of place where you wake to the sound of birds and the soft patter of rain on canvas, with the mist lifting over Arenal Volcano in the distance. It felt luxurious and yet completely in tune with nature.

One of the most meaningful experiences we had here was that each of us planted a tree. It was a simple, hands-on way for the children to connect with the idea of conservation: knowing that somewhere on that lush hillside, “their” trees are taking root and growing alongside the rainforest we had come to admire.

The team at Nayara were simply incredible. They went out of their way to make us feel special, remembering our names and little preferences, checking in on the children and adding thoughtful touches that turned a lovely stay into something truly memorable. It was one of those beautiful places where you feel genuinely looked after from the moment you arrive.

From here we threw ourselves into adventure:

  • Hiking and a private picnic / BBQ at the base of Arenal Volcano, with no one else around, just us in this vast volcanic landscape sharing the most special family lunch.
  • Paddle boarding on Lake Arenal, surrounded by mountains and rainforest.
  • Zip wiring through the canopy: I was terrified at first, then absolutely loved it and wanted to go again. Watching the children’s confidence grow with each zip line is something I will never forget.

Nayara manages to balance high-end comfort with a deep connection to the environment. For families, it is a dream: endless things to do, space to relax, and genuine five-star service that still feels warm and personal.

Andaz Papagayo, Guanacaste

We ended our journey on the Pacific coast at the Andaz Papagayo, in the sun-drenched Guanacaste region. After the jungles and volcano, arriving here feels like stepping into a sophisticated beach hideaway, with sweeping views over the bay and chic, design-led spaces that still feel relaxed enough for children to roam.

What makes Andaz Papagayo special is the way it blends contemporary style with the natural setting. There are beautiful pools, tucked-away terraces and access to beaches that feel wild and rugged rather than overly manicured. We did yoga on a remote stretch of coastline, just us on this ragged, untouched beach, followed by the most wonderful picnic: the kind of slow, mindful moment that anchors an entire trip in your memory.

It was the perfect finale: peaceful, restorative and a chance to look back over everything we had done and seen.

Final Thoughts

Our time in Costa Rica felt like stepping into a living nature documentary, but one where you are invited behind the scenes. From hugging a long-lost suitcase on a riverbank to whispering in the dark as turtles laid their eggs, from squeals on zip wires to quiet yoga on an empty beach, and from planting our own trees to watching tiny frogs in the undergrowth, every day brought something new.

For families who love wildlife, the outdoors and shared adventures, Costa Rica is hard to beat. It is a country that gently nudges you out of your comfort zone, then wraps you in warmth, kindness and unforgettable experiences.

If you would like to plan something similar for your own family, I would love to help you shape your very own Costa Rican story.
