Thailand: a country I keep going back to
Thailand is one of those rare places that truly offers something for everyone. From misty mountains and hill tribes in the north, to buzzing cities and soft-sand beaches fringed with turquoise water in the south, it is a country that rewards you whether it is your first visit or your fifth.
I have travelled to Thailand seven times in different capacities, including as a product manager for a luxury tour operator and most recently on a family holiday. That breadth of experience means I know how to match the right parts of Thailand to the right traveller, whether you are seeking indulgent luxury, authentic cultural immersion or a relaxed family escape.
From northern mountains to island beaches
In the north, around Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, the landscapes turn lush and mountainous. Here you can trek through jungle-clad hills, visit hill tribe communities and wake to cool morning mists over rice terraces. The pace is slower, the air fresher, and there is a real sense of traditional Thailand.
Head south and the energy changes. Bangkok’s skyline and street life hit you all at once: golden temples alongside gleaming shopping malls, quiet canals just a few streets away from neon-lit night markets. Further still and you reach Thailand’s famous beaches: powder-soft sands, dramatic limestone cliffs, long-tail boats bobbing in jade-green coves and sunsets that seem to set the whole sky alight.
A playground for every travel style and budget
One of the reasons I recommend Thailand so often is that it works beautifully for almost every style of traveller and every budget:
- Boutique hideaways tucked in old town lanes or on quiet stretches of sand
- Luxury chain hotels with rooftop pools, sleek spas and world-class service
- Charming homestays and character stays where the welcome is warm and authentic
You can splurge on a five-star pool villa, keep things simple and intimate, or mix and match. Thailand is wonderfully flexible, which makes it ideal for honeymoons, milestone celebrations, family adventures, solo escapes and once-in-a-lifetime journeys.
Food, flavours and local life
Thailand is heaven for food lovers. From tiny street stalls serving fragrant noodle soups and spicy papaya salads, to stylish restaurants reimagining classic dishes, eating here is all part of the journey.
There are some lovely ways to go deeper than simply ordering off a menu:
- Cooking with locals: Shop for herbs and vegetables in a local market, then learn to cook favourites like pad thai, green curry or mango sticky rice in a Thai home or small cookery school.
- Cyclo or tuk tuk tours: Take an open-air cyclo ride around ancient temples or jump in a tuk tuk to explore night markets, backstreets and hidden food spots that many visitors never find.
- Temple time: Visit glittering temples at quieter times of day, learn a little about Buddhism, or simply sit and soak up the calm while the city buzzes outside the walls.
Culture, temples and unforgettable experiences
Thailand’s culture is woven into everyday life. It is in the saffron robes of monks collecting alms at sunrise, the scent of incense curling through temple courtyards, and the way locals greet you with a smile and a wai.
To really immerse yourself, you might like to include:
- Cyclo rides around ancient temples in historic cities, where you can admire intricate carvings and towering stupas at a relaxed pace.
- Muay Thai (Thai boxing) experiences, from watching a live match with the electric energy of the crowd, to a carefully guided beginner-friendly training session for those keen to try it.
- Hands-on craft and village visits, such as joining a local family to learn traditional recipes or visiting small communities that still follow age-old ways of life.
Why my Thailand knowledge matters for your trip
Having returned to Thailand multiple times in a professional and personal capacity, I understand how different areas and styles of accommodation feel on the ground, and how to combine them into a seamless itinerary. I know which neighbourhoods work best for first-timers, which islands still feel unspoilt, and which experiences genuinely add depth rather than ticking a box.
That mix of culture, scenery, food, value and genuine hospitality is what keeps drawing my clients back, and my role is to filter all the options and design a version of Thailand that feels just right for you.
