Cruise Myths Busted: Is a Cruise Holiday Really for You?

Vikki Prescod on 02 Oct 2026

When you think of a cruise, what comes to mind? For many people it is crowded decks, strict formal nights and the fear of feeling seasick for a week. Others assume cruising is only for retirees, or that sea days will be long and boring. It is no surprise that a lot of travellers decide a cruise “isn’t for them” before they have ever stepped on board. As someone who has cruised with my own young family on P&O, and also sailed with Cunard and Holland America without my family, plus visited many ships across different cruise lines, I can confidently say that modern cruising is far more diverse, relaxed and enjoyable than these old stereotypes suggest. Let me bust some of the most common cruise myths and look at what really happens at sea.

Myth 1: “Cruising is only for older travellers”

This is one of the biggest misconceptions I hear.

The reality is that cruising has evolved hugely. Yes, some ships and itineraries cater beautifully for those who want a slower pace and a refined, traditional style. But there are also:

  • Family-friendly ships with kids’ clubs, splash parks and family cabins
  • Stylish, modern ships that appeal to couples and friends
  • Smaller, more intimate ships for those who prefer a quieter, boutique feel

Having cruised with my young family on P&O, I have seen first-hand how well families are catered for, with plenty of activities, flexible dining and space for everyone to relax. The key is choosing the right ship and cruise line for the style of holiday you want.

Truth: There is no single “type” of cruiser any more. From families and multi-generational groups to solo travellers and couples, there is a cruise to match almost every travel style.

Myth 2: “I’ll feel seasick all the time”

Worries about seasickness are very common, especially for first-time cruisers. While no one can guarantee you will never feel a bit of movement, the experience on modern ships is usually very different from what people imagine.

Today’s ships are large, incredibly stable and fitted with advanced stabilisers to reduce motion. Itineraries are often planned with calmer seas in mind, and there are simple steps we can take together to help minimise any discomfort, such as:

  • Choosing a midship cabin on a lower deck
  • Picking routes and seasons where conditions are typically gentler
  • Having tried-and-tested remedies to hand, just in case

From my own sailings, including North Sea and Atlantic crossings, I know how much cabin choice and itinerary planning can make a difference.

Truth: With the right ship, cabin and route, most guests feel very comfortable at sea and are pleasantly surprised by how little movement they notice.

Myth 3: “Cruising is too formal and stuffy”

Another image that lingers is that of rigid dining times, ball gowns every night and a sense of being “on show”.

While there are still cruise lines that offer a wonderfully traditional experience with formal evenings for those who enjoy them, many ships now embrace a far more relaxed, holiday feel. You will find:

  • Casual and flexible dining options
  • A mix of dress codes, often with just one or two optional “dress-up” nights
  • A choice of lounges, bars and restaurants that suit different moods

From sailing with my family on P&O to enjoying the more classic style of Cunard and the refined touches of Holland America, I have experienced both ends of the spectrum. This means I can guide you towards a cruise line that matches your comfort level, whether that is resort-casual or elegantly traditional.

Truth: You can choose a cruise as relaxed or as refined as you like. It is all about picking the line and ship that suits your personality.

Myth 4: “Sea days will be boring”

If you are used to land holidays, the idea of being “stuck on a ship” for a day can sound dull. In reality, many guests end up loving their sea days most of all (myself included)On board, you might find:

  • Pools, spas and adults-only relaxation areas
  • Fitness classes, sports courts and walking or jogging tracks
  • Enrichment talks, cookery demos and wine tastings
  • Live music, shows, cinema screenings and quizzes
  • Quiet corners with sea views and a good book

When I am on board, I often find that there is more on the daily schedule than any one person could possibly do in a day. Whether you want to be busy from morning to night, or simply enjoy some guilt-free downtime, sea days can feel like a real treat.

Truth: Sea days can be as active or as peaceful as you like. They are an opportunity to slow down, recharge and really enjoy the ship.

Myth 5: “A cruise will be more expensive than a land holiday”

At first glance, a cruise fare can look high compared with a hotel-only price. However, it is important to remember how much is typically included as standard:

  • Your cabin accommodation
  • Main dining and most casual eateries
  • A wide range of entertainment and activities
  • Transport between all the destinations on your itinerary

Once you factor in what you might usually spend on meals out, evening entertainment and travel between places on a land-based holiday, a cruise can offer excellent value. There are options at many budget levels too, from shorter introductory sailings to ultra-inclusive luxury.

Truth: When you compare like-for-like and consider everything that is included, a cruise can represent very strong value for money.
