My Favourite Places to Eat in Barbados: A Local’s Guide

Fine Dining Favourites

Champers

Champers offers classic fine dining right on the waterfront. It is located on the south coast, so it is ideal if you are staying in this part of the island, but it is absolutely worth the journey if you are based on the west coast too. Think elegant plates, a lovely atmosphere and the sound of the ocean as your backdrop.

Fusion Rooftop

If you love sushi, Fusion Rooftop in Holetown is a must. It is not on the beach, but it more than makes up for that with a trendy rooftop setting and fantastic food. This was my favourite fine dining restaurant when I lived in Barbados. Insider tip: the smoked shrimp pappardelle is incredible.

The Tides

The Tides, also in Holetown, is a beautiful beachfront fine dining restaurant. It is perfect for a special evening, with a refined menu and a gorgeous setting. I highly recommend the coconut shrimp curry, which is served in an actual coconut shell for that extra touch of Caribbean theatre.

Lone Star

Lone Star blends European and British cuisine with Asian and Caribbean influences, all set on a stunning stretch of west coast beachfront. It has a cool, sophisticated feel and is especially popular for Sunday lunch, which really is a must if you can fit it into your stay.

Fish Pot

Further north along the west coast, Fish Pot is a charming spot that serves lunch and dinner with a relaxed, coastal feel. Many people know it for those meals, but breakfast here is one of the island’s best-kept secrets. If you are staying nearby or happy to take a little drive, it is well worth seeking out.

Sandy Lane Afternoon Tea

Afternoon tea at Sandy Lane is definitely a treat, but it is one I think is worth the splurge. I took my mum here on one of her many visits to see me and it felt very special. Beautiful surroundings, attentive service and a very indulgent spread: perfect if you are celebrating something or simply want a memorable experience.

Nishi

Back in Holetown, Nishi offers sushi and Asian fusion dishes in a stylish setting. It is a great choice if you fancy a change from traditional Caribbean flavours during your stay, without compromising on quality or atmosphere.

Casual & Beachy Bites

Not every meal needs to be a special occasion. Some of my happiest memories are from relaxed lunches, sundowners and simple but delicious bites with a sea view. Here are some of my casual go-tos.

Blush

Blush is located on site at Sugar Bay Hotel on the south coast. It has become really popular and is great fun, especially if you like a pretty setting for selfies. It is open for breakfast and lunch until 4 pm, making it a lovely spot for a relaxed start to the day or a long, lazy lunch.

Tapas

Also on the south coast, Tapas is my daughter Mya’s favourite. It is a brilliant option for cocktails and smaller bites, with a relaxed vibe and lovely views. Ideal for a casual evening with friends or family.

La Cabane

On the west coast, La Cabane is a fantastic beach bar and restaurant where you can dine with your toes in the sand. It has a great atmosphere at any time, but I especially recommend visiting on a Wednesday when a jazz band plays. Aim to arrive around 4.30–5 pm so you can get settled with a drink before the band comes on at around 5.30–6 pm.

Zaccios

Zaccios is another west coast favourite: an easy-going beach bar that is perfect for a casual lunch, a laid-back drink or a simple, no-fuss meal with a sea view. It is the sort of place you can happily linger for hours.

Pepenero

If you are in the mood for Italian, Pepenero in Limegrove shopping centre on the west coast is a solid choice. It is handy if you are spending time shopping in Limegrove and want somewhere convenient and tasty for lunch or dinner.

Pier One

Pier One at Port St Charles is fab for lunch, particularly if you want to turn a meal into more of a day out. After eating, you can use the pool and sun loungers, so it feels more like a mini beach club experience than just a restaurant stop.

Chefette

I could not leave out Chefette. This is the island’s own fast food chain (think McDonald’s, but nicer), and it is a real Bajan favourite. They serve fried chicken, pizza, burgers and their famous rotis: the beef and potato roti was always my go-to. It is quick, affordable and a fun way to eat like a local.
