Why choosing the right Maldives resort matters more than you think!
Four things I always check before a single booking is made...
The Maldives looks simple from a brochure. But for many, this is a special stay so booking with an expert is really important because the key to this holiday is in the detail. Here's what I always cover with clients before anything gets booked.
Pick your season carefully
November to April is dry season so usually delivers calm seas, great visibility, guaranteed sun. May to October brings the monsoon: more cloud and rain, but far fewer tourists and lower prices, so still a good time to travel so long as you know what to expect. But with weather patterns shifting I always manage expectations as to what to expect and when.
Check your flight arrival time before choosing a resort
Seaplanes only fly in daylight and many European flights land at Malé in the evening, which means no seaplane that day and an unplanned overnight stop. My rule: if the flight lands after 2.30pm, I check with the resort on the schedules and risk and if it's a no-go then I start with speedboat-accessible resorts.
Natural island or reclaimed island?
Natural islands are small, wild, and intimate and the reef comes right to the shore. Reclaimed islands are larger and more polished, but feel more like a hotel surrounded by water than a true island. Very different experiences. Know which one you actually want.
All inclusive can differ depending on the island
In the Maldives different resorts have different inclusions so it is important to understand what is, and what is not, included. Read the package carefully. Half board with a sensible drinks arrangement can also be a good option depending on how much you think you will consume and also which island you opt for.
