California Dreaming: Our Family Road Trip from San Francisco to LA
From Fisherman’s Wharf to West Hollywood via Monterey, Pismo Beach and Santa Barbara
In April 2025 I ticked off a big family travel dream: a California coast road trip with my husband and daughter. Starting in San Francisco and ending in Los Angeles, our journey took us through colourful harbours, sweeping Pacific views and some seriously stylish hotels along Highway 1.
We began our adventure with Aer Lingus from Manchester to San Francisco via Dublin, then glided into the city in a private transfer straight to Riu Plaza Fisherman’s Wharf. Its location was perfect for four nights: steps from the piers, the sea lions and those classic cable cars. Mornings started with breakfast at the hotel, then we set out along the waterfront, exploring Fisherman’s Wharf, wandering into North Beach and soaking up that big‑city‑by‑the‑bay feel.
After a few days discovering San Francisco, we collected our BMW X5 hire car at Fisherman’s Wharf and pointed the bonnet south. Our first overnight stop was Portola Hotel & Spa at Monterey Bay, ideal for exploring Cannery Row and the working harbour. We loved the relaxed vibe and being able to stroll to dinner by the water.
Next came Pismo Beach, where we stayed at Inn At The Cove. Waking up to ocean views and the sound of waves was a real highlight, and the coastal walks here are stunning. From there we continued to Santa Barbara, staying at the chic Hotel Californian right by the Funk Zone and the waterfront. It felt very “California cool”, with Spanish‑style architecture and palm‑lined streets.
Our final base was West Hollywood, checking into Chamberlain West Hollywood for three nights. It was a brilliant spot for exploring LA, close to Sunset Boulevard with a glamorous residential feel. A big high point for all of us was Universal Studios Hollywood, where we embraced our inner kids for a full day of rides, shows and movie magic.
We wrapped up in style with a private transfer to LAX and business class flights home with Aer Lingus, which made the overnight journey back to Dublin and then Manchester feel much more civilised.
This route worked beautifully as a family road trip: a few nights to settle in San Francisco, then easy coastal hops with characterful stops, finishing with theme park fun and LA glamour.
