A Weekend in Zurich:

Our Magical Festive Getaway

Gemma Anderson on 21 Nov 2025

Zurich wasn’t just a city break for us – it was primarily an opportunity to catch up with our middle daughter who is living there at moment but it became so much more. A weekend bursting with memories, festive spirit, and those little luxuries that make travel feel truly special.

Checking In: A Boutique Welcome at The Ambassador

We began our stay at The Ambassador, part of the Small Luxury Hotel’s beautiful collection. From the moment we arrived, it felt like the ideal choice – elegant, intimate, and perfectly located for discovering the heart of the city.

Lake Walks and Festive Markets

One of my favourite moments was wandering alongside the beautiful lake looking at the mountains on the horizon. There’s a peacefulness to Zurich that draws you in. But turn a corner, and you’re in the heart of Christmas – streets lined with twinkling fairy lights and the fragrance of mulled wine and gingerbread. We popped into every Christmas market we could find, each one bursting with Swiss charm and festive treats.

Old Town Charm and Storchen Tradition

We meandered through the Old Town’s cobbled streets, stopping at shop windows filled with Swiss chocolates, nutcrackers, and beautiful artisan gifts. We couldn’t resist a glass of champagne at the historic Storchen Hotel – such a classic Zurich experience, sipping bubbles right beside the river as life carried on around us.

Family Moments and Swiss Surprises

A personal highlight was visiting the University campus where my daughter is studying. Walking those paths with her, seeing Zurich through her eyes, made the city feel even more special. We took a ride on the quirky Polybahn (because in Zurich, even the funiculars have a sense of style) and spent happy moments window-shopping along Bahnhofstrasse, dazzled by the sparkling displays and endless Swiss elegance.

Why I Think You’ll Love It Too

What really struck me was Zurich’s blend of sophistication and warmth – it’s a city that invites you in with open arms, especially at Christmas. Every moment felt easy, fun and full of atmosphere.

I can wholeheartedly say Zurich is well worth a visit – whether you’re dreaming of festive magic, lakeside strolls or simply time away somewhere beautiful.

If you’d like to know more, or need a little inspiration for your own weekend escape, I’d love to help you plan something truly special. Zurich stole our hearts – I think it might steal yours too.
