Family Ski Holidays: Challenging, Fun, and Unforgettable

Gemma Anderson on 05 Jan 2026

Are you on the fence about booking a family ski holiday?

If you’ve ever considered a family ski holiday, you’ll know they’re not always the easiest choice—especially with little ones in tow! From squeezing tiny boots onto wriggling feet, to managing multiple pairs of gloves, goggles, and snacks, it’s certainly hard work in the early years. But, as any parent who’s embraced the challenge will tell you, the rewards are truly priceless.

The Joys (and Hectic Mornings!) of Family Skiing

There’s a special magic to seeing the mountains through a child’s eyes. The crisp air, sparkling snow, and that first triumphant glide down a gentle slope—these are moments that become cherished family memories. Yes, it can be chaotic getting everyone ready and out the door (don’t get me started on the lost gloves!), but those wobbly beginnings soon transform into confident turns and huge smiles.

First time on the mountain.

Watching Children Grow (On and Off the Slopes)

My own three girls have been lucky enough to start skiing from an early age and it’s now second nature to them. Seeing their skills and confidence blossom over the years has been incredibly rewarding and I get a huge amount of joy watching them on the slopes. As a parent who learnt to ski later, I won’t pretend it’s always been graceful—some of my own “firsts” have been a source of much family laughter! But learning alongside my children has made it one of the most bonding, uplifting things we’ve ever done together. I also can’t deny that we have also had a lot of fun in the Apres Ski bars over the years!

It’s Not Just About the Skiing

One of the things I love most about ski resorts is how much they offer beyond the slopes. When little legs (or grown-up ones!) need a break, there’s always more to enjoy:

  • Sledging and Tobogganing: Perfect for laughter-filled afternoons.
  • Winter Walks and Snowshoeing: Explore tranquil trails, snowy forests, and breathtaking views together.
  • Spa Retreats: Many resorts boast luxurious spas—ideal for a little grown-up indulgence or a family-friendly pool session.
  • Ice skating, horse-drawn sleigh rides, alpine coasters: There really is something for everyone.

Some of our best memories are from spontaneous snowy adventures, steaming mugs of hot chocolate in a cosy café, or watching the girls whizz down a toboggan run.

Sledging fun!

Austria: Our Family Favourite

While we’ve dipped into fantastic French and Italian resorts, Austria always calls us back. There’s something about the chocolate-box charm, the welcoming family-run hotels, and the wide, tree-lined pistes. Whether it’s a sociable après-ski hot chocolate or a snowy stroll through the village, Austria offers a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation for all ages.

The Benefits Last a Lifetime

What’s most special to me about our family ski holidays isn’t just the activity itself, but everything it brings: teamwork, resilience, joy, and the chance to switch off from daily routines. Our girls have gained so much confidence and independence, made friends from all over Europe, and learned to love the great outdoors.

Make Your Own Memories

If you’re dreaming of your own alpine adventure, don’t let the worry of hard work put you off. With the right support—tailored accommodation, family-friendly resorts, and seamless logistics—family ski holidays can be truly magical. It’s these challenging, beautiful, shared experiences that bring us closer together and create memories to last a lifetime.
