30 Days in Australia: From Koalas and Coastal Roads to Cricket and Wine Country

A month-long adventure through Australia's cities, beaches, wine regions and iconic landscapes, discovering why this incredible country deserves a place on every traveller's bucket list.

Australia had been high on my travel wish list for years, and after spending 30 days exploring everything from Brisbane and Byron Bay to Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne, I can honestly say it exceeded every expectation. From close encounters with wildlife and spectacular coastal drives to world-class wine regions and unforgettable city experiences, this trip reminded me why Australia remains one of the most diverse and rewarding destinations in the world.

My Australian adventure began with a flight to Brisbane, where I was lucky enough to experience Qatar Airways' renowned Q Suites. Seven hours of sleep on a long-haul flight felt like a minor miracle and certainly helped ease the transition to the other side of the world.

The first few days were spent adjusting to the time difference and exploring Brisbane. A visit to the Koala Sanctuary was a definite highlight, giving me my first opportunity to see koalas up close and feed kangaroos in a relaxed natural setting.

A welcome break from city life came when I visited a long-time friend and spent a weekend on North Stradbroke Island. Just a short ferry journey from the mainland, it felt like a completely different world. Quiet beaches, kangaroos grazing nearby and a slower pace of life offered the perfect introduction to the Australian lifestyle. It was easy to understand why so many people fall in love with this country.Straddie Island

From Brisbane, I set off on one of the highlights of the trip – a road journey south towards Sydney.

My first stop was Byron Bay, which quickly became one of my favourite places in Australia. Staying in a rainforest retreat surrounded by nature was a wonderful contrast to city life. Byron itself offered a perfect blend of relaxed coastal charm, excellent restaurants, lively bars and a welcoming atmosphere. It is somewhere I would happily return to.Byron Bay

The journey continued to Port Macquarie, a fantastic overnight stop on the New South Wales coast. Sometimes the simplest moments become the most memorable, and after several hours on the road, a long walk along the beachfront followed by dinner overlooking the ocean was exactly what I needed.

Next came the Hunter Valley, one of Australia's best-known wine regions. Staying on a vineyard for two nights allowed plenty of time to explore the wineries and enjoy the beautiful countryside. Joining an organised wine tour proved to be the perfect way to experience the region without worrying about driving. The excellent wines were matched only by the sight of kangaroos casually wandering through the vineyards.Arriving in Sydney was a special moment. Seeing the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge for the first time is something every traveller remembers. The city immediately lived up to its reputation, offering incredible views, beautiful harbour scenery and a vibrant atmosphere.

During my stay, the city was affected by tragic events that cast a shadow over what had been a joyful journey. What struck me most was the resilience and strength shown by local people in the days that followed. It was a reminder of how precious travel experiences can be and how important it is to make the most of every opportunity.Sydney Harbour

From Sydney, I flew to Adelaide, a city that pleasantly surprised me. After the pace of Sydney, Adelaide felt relaxed, welcoming and incredibly easy to explore on foot. It also serves as an excellent base for discovering South Australia's famous wine regions, and a day trip to the beautiful Barossa Valley was one of the highlights of my stay.

The next stage of the journey took me along the spectacular Great Ocean Road. Despite challenging weather, the scenery was breath taking. Towering cliffs, dramatic coastlines and fascinating stories of shipwrecks, early settlers and Australia's gold rush history made this one of the most memorable parts of the trip.

The final destination was Melbourne, arriving just in time for Christmas and the Boxing Day Test Match. Melbourne quickly impressed me with its multicultural atmosphere, incredible food scene and distinctive neighbourhoods, each offering something different. Whether exploring the city, enjoying the beaches or simply soaking up the summer atmosphere, Melbourne proved to be a fantastic way to end the adventure.Koala sleeping

Looking back, what makes Australia so special is its incredible variety. In a single trip, you can experience vibrant cities, beautiful beaches, world-class wine regions, extraordinary wildlife and some of the most spectacular scenery on earth.

After 30 unforgettable days, I returned home with wonderful memories, plenty of travel inspiration and an even greater appreciation for this remarkable country.

If Australia is on your travel wish list, whether you're interested in a self-drive adventure, a city and beach combination, a cricket tour, a wine-focused itinerary or a tailor-made journey exploring multiple regions, I'd be delighted to help you plan the perfect trip. The Ashes
