A Peaceful Arrival in Sri Lanka – Uga Riva Hotel

After an overnight flight with SriLankan Airlines from London Heathrow to Colombo, I finally touched down on the island that had been on my travel list for so long. Once I’d collected my luggage, exchanged some currency, and picked up a local SIM card, it was just a short 30-minute drive to my first stop — Uga Riva, our home for the night.

Nestled in the leafy suburbs, Uga Riva is a beautiful boutique hotel with only seven rooms. The property is a restored 180-year-old manor, once home to a prominent Sri Lankan family and frequented by many dignitaries over the years. Today, it feels like a peaceful little oasis — five acres of coconut palms, lush gardens, and an inviting swimming pool surrounded by tranquility. It’s the kind of place that’s perfect for a small group of friends or an extended family looking for privacy and calm.

Upon arrival, we were welcomed with a traditional Sri Lankan ritual. Guests are handed a green leaf and, using a candle, light a thin strip of oiled cloth. This ancient Buddhist custom symbolizes the dispelling of darkness and ignorance, and the welcoming of light, knowledge, and wisdom. It’s a beautiful and peaceful gesture — one that we experienced throughout our stay in Sri Lanka.

The rooms at Uga Riva are large, cool, and airy, with stone floors, high ceilings, and solid wooden doors that give a sense of timeless elegance. Each room has its own outdoor seating area — a perfect spot to relax with a book or a cup of tea while enjoying the quiet surroundings. Despite being a small property, it feels spacious and private.

There’s also a small bar on site, which perfectly suits the intimate nature of the hotel. Alongside a cold Lion Beer (a local favourite), the staff also mix some wonderful cocktails. The dining area is equally charming — ideal for a small group or family meal. We enjoyed a delicious dinner there, followed the next morning by a sumptuous breakfast that set the tone for the day ahead.

The food in Sri Lanka deserves its own mention — it’s simply delicious. A Sri Lankan curry is both a feast and a challenge, with so many delicious flavours and sides that it’s almost impossible to finish everything.

Uga Riva truly captured my heart — a peaceful, elegant retreat where traditional charm meets genuine Sri Lankan hospitality. I would love to return one day and will certainly recommend it to anyone seeking a restful and authentic start to their Sri Lankan journey, or indeed a fabulous finale.

With its warm hospitality, historic charm, and peaceful setting, it truly captures the essence of Sri Lanka — calm, gracious, and friendly.
