Sleep below the sea on Pemba Island
Zanzibar draws the crowds. Pemba doesn't. Set in the northern reaches of the same archipelago, this is where forest, mangrove, and reef converge as one living system that remains largely intact and largely unvisited. The Manta Resort sits along a quiet stretch of beach on this remote island, shaped entirely by its surroundings above and below the waterline. The property is small, considered, and deliberately unhurried. At its heart is one of the most extraordinary places to sleep in the Indian Ocean: The Underwater Room, a private floating structure moored offshore with a bedroom set below sea-level. It's worth understanding why this place has earned such quiet devotion - and how it fits into a wider journey through East Africa.
A remote island, away from the everyday
Manta is intentionally modest. Just a handful of rooms, a small and attentive team, and the reef never far away. Rooms are built using local, textural materials, designed so that light, air, and the ocean view take precedence over the interior itself. Paths weave through indigenous trees down to a beach where the sand is fine and the water is warm and calm. It's a place that asks nothing of you yet offers a great deal in return: quiet, privacy, and a setting that feels genuinely wild. Pemba sits within one of East Africa's most productive coastal ecosystems, and the Pemba Channel (recognised as a coral climate refuge) provides the ecological foundation that makes everything here possible.
A room unlike any other
On land, Manta's accommodation reflects the same restraint that defines the wider property. Rooms use natural materials and local textures, with the emphasis firmly on the view rather than the décor. They're calm, well-considered spaces suited to guests who want comfort without ostentation. But it's the Underwater Room that sets Manta apart from anywhere else. A private floating structure anchored offshore and reached by boat, it's built across three levels: an upper sundeck for stargazing, a lounge and en-suite bathroom at water level, and a bedroom below the surface—where floor-to-ceiling windows open directly onto the reef. From bed, you watch coral and fish move through the water at close range. At night, underwater lights draw marine life closer still. Availability is limited by design, and it books well in advance.
Diving the Pemba Channel
The Pemba Channel ranks among East Africa's finest diving destinations, characterised by dramatic drop-offs and reef systems that remain in genuinely good health. Guided diving and snorkelling at Manta are kept deliberately small-scale and are led by people who know these waters well. The resort's Coral Reef Safari - named Regenerative Travel Experience of the Year - takes guests into the reef with real ecological context, rather than as a simple spectacle. Above the water, Pemba offers mangrove channels, indigenous forest, and active turtle nesting projects on the island itself. A typical day might begin with an early dive, the chance to slow down with a long lunch, and end with the kind of afternoon that asks nothing more than your presence on the beach.
A place with purpose
The Underwater Room was never designed as a novelty. It was created, in the resort's own words, to focus care on a single stretch of protected sea and over more than a decade, it has done exactly that. Once operating costs are covered, the proceeds from stays in the Underwater Room go directly towards the management of the Pemba Channel Conservation Area through the Blue Alliance Marine Protected Areas programme. That funding supports scientific research, community engagement, and active reef monitoring. Manta also runs turtle nest protection on the island.
