On a recent visit, our Travel Counsellors discovered an Antigua shaped not only by its coastline, but by rainforest trails, historic harbours, local flavours, lively traditions and the people who bring the island’s story to life. From off-road adventures and rum tasting to Caribbean cooking and sunset views, here’s how to spend seven days discovering another side of Antigua.

Step away from the main road

A Jeep safari takes you into parts of Antigua most visitors never reach. You'll pass through small villages, pineapple plantations, and thick tropical vegetation, with a local guide who genuinely knows the island. The open-sided Jeep means you feel every part of it: the warm air, the changing scenery, and the occasional dramatic viewpoint where the coastline spreads out below. It's a good way to understand how Antiguans actually live and a fantastic way to see more of the island beyond the beautiful beaches.

Discover the stories behind the scenery

Nelson's Dockyard is the only working Georgian dockyard of its kind in the world, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Adding a historical sightseeing tour to your stay gives you proper time to explore here, as well as the chance to visit the nearby Interpretation Centre, which covers the island's maritime and cultural past with real depth. The contrast outside is worth pausing for: ancient stone buildings sit alongside sleek modern yachts, framed by green hills rolling down to English Harbour. Watch Antigua come alive at sunset

Shirley Heights is a must-visit during any holiday to Antigua. By day, it's a former military lookout with wide views across English Harbour. On Sunday evenings, it becomes a lively barbecue and music event, with steel drums, jerk chicken, rum punch, and a crowd that's genuinely having a good time. One thing our Travel Counsellors learned is to go early for the views, then stay for the atmosphere.

Cook, taste, and raise a glass

If you think Antigua’s best asset is its beaches, then wait until you’ve tried its food. At Nicole's Table, our Travel Counsellors spent a morning learning to cook Caribbean dishes from scratch, discovering local ingredients, techniques, and flavours they'd never encountered before. It was so much fun, everyone said they would try to recreate the dishes at home.

The West Indies Rum Academy is equally engaging. Our Travel Counsellors learned how rum is produced, tasted their way through several styles, and blended their own bottle to take away. For meals out, the team rated OJ's Beach Bar and Restaurant for fresh seafood, Trappas Restaurant and Bar for dinner, and Loose Cannon for a relaxed lunch. Each one felt like a genuine taste of the island rather than a resort extension.

Explore the coastline and capital

One of the most highly recommended tours our Travel Counsellors experienced traced the scenic southwest shore past secluded coves and small harbours, with the water shifting from deep navy to pale turquoise as you go. They also enjoyed a trip out to Prickly Pear Island, where you can enjoy excellent snorkelling opportunities – the area is known for its clear water, colourful fish, and a pace that's quietly restorative.

The tour also brings you into St John's, where Heritage Quay offers duty-free shopping and Vendor's Mall gives you something more local: crafts, artwork, and gifts made on the island. Everyone came away with both and a much clearer sense of the city's energy, something they would never have experienced if they had just stayed at their hotel.
