Stay at a Greek resort that has a history unlike any other

Corfu's eastern coast is quieter than the north and west of the island, and that's largely the point. Domes Miramare sits on this stretch of shoreline looking out across the Ionian Sea towards the Greek mainland - a beachfront property with 113 suites, residences, and private villas, and an adults-only policy that starts at 16.

The resort is part of the Domes Resorts portfolio, the same group behind Domes of Elounda in Crete, and carries the Luxury Collection designation from Marriott - a reliable marker of quality and consistency. It's also a property with genuine history. Originally owned by the Onassis family, the Miramare hosted Jackie O, Maria Callas, and various European royals throughout the 1960s. A major renovation has brought it up to contemporary luxury standards while keeping that sense of heritage intact. It sits around 30 minutes from Corfu Town - close enough for an evening out, yet far enough to feel removed from the busier parts of the island.

Rooms are divided across two distinct parts of the resort. The Exclusive Area sits right on the waterfront and houses single-storey Pavilion Suites, Pavilion Retreats, and HRH Villas. These are the standout options if direct sea access and a private pool are priorities - detached and semi-detached, with high levels of privacy as a result. The three main buildings set back from the shore house Emerald Suites, Retreats, and Residences. Views here are framed through the resort's century-old olive grove rather than directly over water, and the ground and first floor options have a more residential quality.

A Michelin-starred chef oversees Makris, the fine dining restaurant, which sits alongside a Mediterranean restaurant for more relaxed meals, and a Sushi Bar for something lighter in the evenings. Three bars cover the rest of the day: pool bars serving cocktails through the afternoon, the Blue Bar for evening drinks, and the Raw Bar - the most distinctive of the three - which pairs a creative cocktails menu with progressive sushi and Asian-influenced dishes.

On-site, the Soma Spa offers treatments alongside more experiential options - olive oil and wine tastings, traditional Greek coffee served in a hovoli, and sunrise and sunset yoga sessions under the olive trees. There are four pools, and the Miramaretta, the resort's private cruiser, is available to hire for time out on the Ionian.

Off-site, the fishing village of Benitses is a short taxi ride away, with good local tavernas and a more authentic feel than the resort towns further north. Corfu Town is worth making time for too - the UNESCO-listed old town has a well-preserved Venetian quarter, independent restaurants, and a good bar scene, making it a great place to spend an evening away from the resort.

Domes Miramare suits couples who want a high level of privacy and a resort that doesn't feel high-volume or overly commercial. It works equally well for honeymooners and groups of friends - the variety across dining and bars means there's enough going on without the resort feeling busy or crowded. Families with teenagers aged 16 and over are welcome, which is worth knowing if you're looking for a luxury option that works for older children without compromising on the overall atmosphere.
