Experiences the whole family will remember
One of Simon's biggest takeaways was that the moments everyone could enjoy together became the ones they still talk about today. Rather than simply visiting attractions, the family immersed themselves in Vietnam's traditions through hands-on experiences. In Hanoi, they visited the home of a seventh-generation water puppet craftsman, where they painted their own puppets, learnt the techniques behind this centuries-old art form, and even put on their own puppet show together. Later in Hoi An, they joined local artisans for a lantern-making workshop, carefully crafting colourful silk lanterns to take home. These interactive experiences appealed to every generation, proving that some of the best travel memories come from getting involved rather than simply looking on.
A destination where everyone finds their highlight
One of the reasons Vietnam works so well for multigenerational travel is its incredible variety. Simon's parents loved soaking up the country's history and spectacular scenery, from exploring the Imperial Citadel in Hue to cruising through the dramatic limestone landscapes of Ninh Binh and Lan Ha Bay.
For Simon and his partner, Vietnam's incredible food scene and fascinating culture made every day different, whether wandering through Hanoi's Old Quarter, sampling street food in Hoi An, or learning to cook authentic Vietnamese dishes alongside local chefs.
Meanwhile, his seven-year-old son had a completely different list of highlights. He came home talking about riding through Hanoi in a Soviet Jeep, making his own puppet show, visiting the famous Train Street, and creating his own lantern in Hoi An. It was a reminder that every generation experiences a destination in their own way but on the same journey.
It's not all about sightseeing
Simon also discovered that building downtime into the itinerary was just as important as the sightseeing itself. The two-night cruise through Lan Ha Bay offered a chance to slow the pace, with kayaking, cycling through peaceful villages, Tai Chi on deck, and simply enjoying time together surrounded by spectacular scenery. The family also appreciated staying in hotels and resorts with swimming pools, giving the youngest in their group somewhere to burn off energy while the adults relaxed.
Explore the cultural heart of the city
Chinatown offers a fascinating introduction to the city's Chinese heritage, with historic shophouses, bustling markets, temples, and some of Singapore's best-loved hawker centres. You'll find traditional businesses alongside modern cafés and restaurants, creating a neighbourhood that feels both historic and contemporary.
A short distance away, Little India has an entirely different atmosphere. Colourful streets, spice-scented markets, ornate temples, and family-run eateries create one of Singapore's most vibrant districts. It's a wonderful place to explore on foot, taking in the sounds, colours, and flavours that reflect the city's Indian heritage.
Then there's Kampong Gelam, historically Singapore's Malay-Muslim quarter. Today, it combines heritage landmarks with independent boutiques, street art, stylish cafés, and creative spaces. Around Haji Lane and Arab Street, you'll find a lively mix of old and new that perfectly reflects modern Singapore.
