Created in partnership with the Travel Foundation, this thoughtfully designed journey takes a lower-impact approach to exploring Thailand. Travelling primarily by rail and water, staying at properties rooted in local culture and choosing community-led experiences, it helps reduce the journey’s environmental impact while supporting the people and places you visit.
From Bangkok’s historic canals and Ayutthaya’s ancient monuments to Sukhothai’s quiet countryside and Chiang Mai’s mountain landscapes, discover Thailand through its food, traditions and everyday life. Meet local hosts, explore traditional crafts and organic gardens, and turn every stage of the journey into part of the adventure.
Days 1–3: Bangkok
Arrive in Bangkok and settle into Ariyasom Villa, your base for the next three nights. This peaceful retreat offers a welcome contrast to the energy of the capital, with lush gardens and a tranquil atmosphere in the heart of the city. From here, you’ll venture into Bangkok’s historic heart and the surrounding countryside over the next few days, returning to this leafy sanctuary between adventures.
In Thailand’s capital, explore the Old Town, travelling by express boat to Wat Pho and the Grand Palace before continuing along the Chao Phraya River and its atmospheric canals. A solar-powered boat carries you past wooden shophouses, local temples and quiet waterways, revealing a slower side of the city. Later, enjoy an evening at Poomjai Garden, a century-old family garden and organic permaculture project. Savour dinner surrounded by tropical greenery, with fresh ingredients sourced from the local community and produce grown beneath a rare old lychee tree.
Beyond the bustle of central Bangkok, the countryside of Nakhon Pathom Province beckons. Take the train to Phra Pathom Chedi, Thailand’s tallest stupa and one of the country’s most revered Buddhist landmarks, rising 127 metres above the surrounding town. After exploring this magnificent golden monument, enjoy lunch at Joon’s Studio and Café, a family-run art space where you can choose to join a creative workshop.
Day 4: Ayutthaya
Travel by train from Bangkok to Ayutthaya, watching the city gradually give way to farmlands and local communities. Your home for the night is Sala Ayutthaya, a stylish riverside hotel set directly opposite the ancient ruins. The city’s remarkable history begins the moment you step outside, with crumbling stone structures forming a dramatic backdrop.
Explore the UNESCO-listed Ayutthaya Historical Park by bicycle, passing ancient temples and peaceful parkland. After a delicious lunch at a local Thai restaurant, board a long-tail boat to Bang Pa-in Summer Palace and wander through its elegant gardens before visiting Wat Niwet Thammaprawat, an unusual Gothic-style temple beside the river.
Day 5: Phitsanulok
Continue north by train to Lopburi, a historic town known for its resident macaques and striking Prang Sam Yod temple. A walking tour takes you through the town’s fascinating past, from Khmer architecture to King Narai’s Palace, where stories of international trade and royal ambition come to life.
After lunch beside the Lopburi River, continue by train to Phitsanulok, where you’ll spend one night at Pattara Resort & Spa. Known as the ‘Forest in the City’, this nature-filled retreat surrounds its private rooms with lush gardens, a lotus pond and an infinity pool with jacuzzi beds. Recognised for luxury accommodation in a natural setting and environmental conservation, it’s a fitting stop on this lower-impact journey.
Day 6: Sukhothai
Travel to Sukhothai and spend the day exploring its ancient capital by bicycle. Following quiet canals and traffic-free paths, you’ll pass rice paddies, traditional communities and some of Thailand’s most important historic temples.
Discover the graceful ruins of Wat Mahathat, Wat Si Sawai, Wat Sa Si and Wat Si Chum, while learning about Sukhothai’s architecture, Buddhist heritage and enduring influence on Thai culture. Travelling by bicycle offers a slower, more intimate way to experience this remarkable landscape.
Your base for the night is Legendha Sukhothai, a boutique resort designed as a traditional Thai village. Set beside a peaceful canal and surrounded by teak houses, lotus ponds and leafy gardens, it lies just one kilometre from the UNESCO-listed Historical Park. Enjoy authentic Thai cuisine at the riverside restaurant, or experience the region’s heritage through traditional cultural performances.
Days 7–8: Sukhothai to Chiang Mai
Before leaving Sukhothai, visit Baan Na Thon Chan Community, a rural village rarely found on the usual tourist route. Explore by bicycle or local truck, enjoy a bowl of Sukhothai-style noodles and discover traditional crafts, from silk weaving and fermented cloth production to handmade wooden toys.
You may also pick fruit in a local orchard and meet residents who have opened their homes and livelihoods to visitors. The experience offers an insight into a more community-led approach to tourism and the sustainable practices woven into everyday life.
Later, board the overnight train to Chiang Mai. Settle into your air-conditioned sleeper berth in second class and watch the scenery disappear into the evening as the train carries you north through Thailand. It’s an enjoyable, low-impact way to travel, transforming the journey between destinations into an experience in its own right.
Arrive in Chiang Mai the following morning and continue to Lisu Lodge, a sustainable retreat in the Mae Tang countryside. Meet a local Lisu guide and explore the surrounding village, temple, vegetable gardens and Himmapaan Nursery before enjoying dinner at the lodge.
Days 9–10: Chiang Mai
Visit Araksa Tea Garden, a USDA and EU certified organic tea farm where you can pick tea leaves with a local guide, learn how they are processed and enjoy a tasting before continuing into the city.
Your home for the next two nights is Tamarind Village, a Lanna-style boutique hotel in the heart of historic Chiang Mai. Sheltered by a magnificent 200-year-old tamarind tree, the property is arranged around flower-filled courtyards and offers a peaceful oasis close to ancient temples and traditional shopping streets. Daily cultural activities, from flower-garland making and umbrella painting to bamboo weaving and traditional leaf folding, offer further ways to connect with the heritage of northern Thailand.
Explore the city on foot, visiting bustling markets, historic temples and the Lanna Folklife Museum. You’ll also visit the Chiang Mai Women’s Correctional Institute, where former prisoners run a traditional Thai massage spa. The initiative provides valuable training and skills to help women build independent futures after completing their sentences.
The following day, choose how you’d like to discover more of Chiang Mai. Travel by songthaew through neighbourhood markets and the historic area of Wat Gatekaram, or cycle through the ancient ruins of Wiang Kum Kam, a once-lost city scattered among rural fields. Alternatively, take a long-tail boat along the Mae Ping River, passing riverside villages and fishermen, before enjoying lunch at a local restaurant serving organic food. Later, explore Chiang Mai’s Old Town, visit the peaceful jungle temple of Wat Pha Lat and climb to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, where evening chanting offers a serene end to the day.
Day 11: Chiang Mai to Bangkok
Today, meet a local chef and travel by songthaew and train into the Thai-Burmese community of Lamphun. Begin at a bustling local market, selecting fresh ingredients for your cooking class while learning about the dishes and traditions of northern Thailand.
At the family-run cooking studio, discover Lanna culture, stroll through an organic garden and prepare a selection of regional dishes over charcoal and firewood. After lunch, return to Chiang Mai and board the overnight train to Bangkok.
Settle into your air-conditioned sleeper berth for the evening journey south. As the train moves through the darkness, the gentle rhythm of the railway offers a memorable taste of Thailand’s slower, more immersive way of travelling – and a chance to reflect on the experiences of the journey so far.
Day 12: Bangkok
For the grand finale of your Thai adventure, arrive in Bangkok and check into Shanghai Mansion Boutique Hotel in the heart of Chinatown. With its atmospheric Chinese-style design and lively location, it offers a memorable base for your final full day and night in Thailand.
As evening falls, explore the backstreets and bright lights of Yaowarat Street with a local guide. Discover Chinatown’s history and meet some of its favourite street food artisans, sampling Chinese dumplings, peppered pork noodles, Chinese doughnuts, sweet desserts and fragrant teas. Toast the adventure of a lifetime with a cocktail in atmospheric Chinatown, traditional Thai music or panoramic city views from a rooftop overlooking Bangkok’s glittering skyline.
