Sri Lanka through Caroline’s eyes. Sunshine, safaris and stress‑free travel

Kate Matthews on 16 Mar 2026

Every so often a trip comes along that reminds you exactly why you love travel. Caroline’s recent holiday to Sri Lanka was one of those, a great mix of golden beaches, lush tea country, wildlife encounters and warm local hospitality. She has just left me a wonderful review of her experience, so I thought I would turn her words into a blog to share what Sri Lanka is really like when everything is tailored and taken care of for you.

Some holidays are special because of the destination. Others are special because of the way they come together. Caroline’s recent trip to Sri Lanka was both.

In her own words, “Kate is a travel magician! As usual, we booked late and as usual she managed to pull off the holiday of a lifetime for us, to Sri Lanka.” This is the story of that holiday, how we took a very specific wish list, tight timescales and tricky distances, and turned it into a smooth, spectacular Sri Lankan adventure.

A late booking and a very specific wish list

Caroline and her husband Paul came to me with a clear vision of what they wanted from Sri Lanka. There were particular locations they were keen to visit and much‑loved hotels they had their hearts set on.

The challenge:

  • They were booking late.
  • Distances between their chosen spots were significant.
  • Travel timescales were tight.

In Caroline’s words: “We had very specific requests about where we wanted to go, which were not easy to accommodate given the distances and timescales involved…”

This is where a tailor‑made approach really matters. Rather than forcing them into a pre‑set itinerary, I started with their wish list and worked everything around it.

Crafting a spectacular Sri Lanka itinerary

Step by step, we shaped a route that ticked every box possible without feeling rushed. Together with my trusted local partners, I worked out how to link each location comfortably, choosing the right order, the right travel times and the right stays.

Caroline says:
“Kate incorporated all our wishes of both locations and venues into a spectacular itinerary.”

Key elements included:

  • The destinations that really mattered to them, planned in a logical order so travel days felt manageable.
  • A blend of characterful hotels and must‑stay properties that matched their style and expectations.
  • Enough time in each place to actually enjoy it, not just pass through.

When “fully booked” is not the end of the story

One of Caroline’s top priorities was a particular hotel that held a strong appeal. Initially, it was showing as fully booked for their dates. For many travellers, that would be the end of the conversation.

Instead, I stayed in close contact with our local team in Sri Lanka, monitoring changes and any last‑minute availability that might open up.

As Caroline put it:
“Even when some places were fully booked, she kept in touch with the local team, securing us a stay at our very much wished‑for hotel quite late on.”

This is one of the benefits of having a personal Travel Counsellor, you have someone quietly working behind the scenes on your behalf, even when it looks like a “no”

Upgrades and added touches along the way

Travel does not stop evolving once it is booked. As options and upgrades became available, I continued to keep an eye on ways to enhance their trip.

Caroline says:
“She kept abreast of upgrades we could access, so the tour just got better and better.”

That meant:

  • Identifying and securing room or experience upgrades when they became available.
  • Staying flexible to small refinements that would make each day more special.
  • Ensuring they always got the best possible experience for their budget and preferences.

Listening first, then building the magic

One of the best parts of Caroline’s review is how she describes the planning process:

“We have been so impressed every time we have used Kate's services, from the initial contact and planning, making recommendations that were useful, through to the final tour plan. She listens to everything you want and then magically creates an amazing trip.”

For me, this is at the heart of what I do:

  • I start by listening. What do you love? What do you not want? How do you like to travel?
  • I then make thoughtful recommendations based on real experience and trusted partners.
  • I pull everything into a detailed, easy‑to‑follow tour plan so you always know what is happening next, without needing to manage the logistics yourself.

Why a personal Travel Counsellor makes Sri Lanka hassle‑free

Sri Lanka is a destination where careful planning makes a huge difference, varying climates, long but beautiful journeys, and so many choices of where to stay and what to see.

Caroline sums it up perfectly:
“If you want a fabulous and hassle-free trip, Kate is your person, you just have to relax and and enjoy your holiday unfold, because she's done absolutely everything else for you.”

Using a personal Travel Counsellor for a trip like this means:

  • You have one dedicated expert handling every element of your itinerary.
  • Your trip is shaped around you, not around the easiest route to sell.
  • You can relax and enjoy, knowing the details have been checked, double‑checked and are being looked after while you are away.
  • You have support before, during and after your journey.

Caroline finishes her review with:
“We are once again indebted to her and looking forward to our next one already!”
and
“Thank you Kate!”
