My Heartwarming Journey Through The Gambia
Volunteering, Wildlife Encounters & Beachfront Bliss
The Gambia might be one of Africa’s smallest countries, but it delivers some of the continent’s biggest experiences. On my recent visit, I discovered a place filled with warmth — from the sunshine to the people — and a depth of culture, wildlife, and community spirit that stays with you long after you return home. This trip wasn’t just about relaxing on golden beaches (though there was plenty of that too!). It was a meaningful blend of giving back, learning, connecting with nature, and enjoying the comfort of a familiar favourite hotel. From volunteering with the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust, to encountering wildlife at the Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Centre, to unwinding at the African Princess Beach Hotel, every day brought something unforgettable.
πΏ Mandina Lodges β A Peaceful Nature Base
Before beginning my volunteering work, I based myself at Mandina Lodges, just a scenic 1.3km walk from the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust. Surrounded by forest, mangroves, and vibrant birdlife, it was here that I spotted one of my favourites β the blue-breasted kingfisher. A beautiful and tranquil place to start each day before heading to the centre.
π΄ Volunteering with the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust
Making a Difference, One Hoof at a Time
One of the most impactful parts of my journey was spending time with the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust, a charity devoted to improving the welfare of working equines. But the centre is home to far more than horses and donkeys β it also cares for sheep, goats, cats, and dogs, each one receiving compassion, rehabilitation, and safety.
My time there offered a real insight into the daily life of this dedicated team. Activities included:
- Grooming and basic animal care
- Helping to clean and organise a new storage room
- Sorting tack and equipment
- Destroying damaged saddles that were no longer safe to use
- Joining the daily dog walks, where the dogs frolicked happily in the river, splashing and playing with pure joy
Seeing the animals thrive in such a caring environment was deeply moving. Even the smallest tasks felt meaningful, contributing in some way to the wellbeing of animals that mean so much to local communities.
π Visiting the Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Centre
A Rare and Magical Wildlife Experience
From the coast, I travelled into the heart of the country to the River Gambia National Park, home of the Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Project (CRP). This sanctuary allows rescued chimpanzees to live freely on protected river islands, offering a rare chance to observe them in a natural, peaceful setting.
Drifting along the river felt like stepping into another world. Wildlife revealed itself quietly but dramatically:
- I watched chimpanzees foraging and relaxing in family groups
- I learned how each one had been rescued and protected
And then a moment Iβll never forget:
A family of seven hippos surfaced beside our boat β the
first time I had ever seen hippos in the wild.
They lingered gracefully, bobbing in and out of the water, creating one of the
most magical memories of the entire trip.
ποΈ Relaxing at the African Princess Beach Hotel
Comfortable, Stylish & Perfectly Located
My stay at the African Princess Beach Hotel was not my first β and returning felt like greeting an old friend. I was delighted to see new additions, especially the elegant cocktail bar, and the amazing breakfast that started each day perfectly.
This trip, I stayed in a swim-up room, which added an extra touch of luxury, allowing me to dip into the pool straight from my terrace.
One of the joys of choosing bed and breakfast in The Gambia is the freedom to explore the country's excellent restaurants. With so many great places to eat nearby, B&B is absolutely the ideal board basis here.
The African Princess remains peaceful, stylish, and wonderfully located on the beach β an ideal base for relaxation after days filled with exploration and volunteering.
β€οΈ Final Thoughts: Why The Gambia Stays With You
The Gambia is a place that feels deeply personal. It invites connection β with communities, with wildlife, with nature, and with yourself. My trip was a powerful blend of volunteering, adventure, and relaxation, and I left with new memories, new appreciation, and a strong desire to return.
Whether youβre looking to give back, explore wildlife, unwind on the coast, or discover somewhere warm and welcoming, The Gambia has a way of capturing your heart.
