From Sumo rings to bamboo forests, gold-leaf ice cream to Korean BBQ, my journey through Japan and South Korea was an adventure for all the senses. Each stop revealed something new - rich traditions, breathtaking scenery, and heart felt encounters that remind us why travel is so special.

From Tokyo to Seoul: A Journey Through Japan & South Korea

This summer, we set off on a journey we’d been dreaming about for years — a cultural and culinary odyssey through Japan and South Korea. From the moment we settled into our Turkish Airlines Business Class seats, champagne in hand and lounge comforts behind us, we knew this was going to be a trip to remember. And of course, Arthur the Travelling Bear was along for the ride!

Tokyo – A Playful Start to Our Adventure

Our time in Tokyo began with a truly unique mix of culture and fun. We experienced the power and precision of Japan’s national sport at a sumo show, marvelling at the wrestlers’ skill, discipline, and ritual.

From there, we slowed the pace for a serene traditional tea ceremony, learning the graceful art of matcha preparation and enjoying every mindful sip.

Then came one of the most unforgettable (and unexpected) highlights — dressing up and taking to the streets in Tokyo go-karts, zipping past landmarks and waving to surprised pedestrians.

As evening fell, we joined a Tokyo food tour, exploring hidden izakayas and tiny street stalls. We sampled sizzling yakitori skewers, fresh sushi, savoury pancakes, and a few local delicacies we’d never tried before — all washed down with the warm hospitality that makes Japan so special.

Shimizu – A Taste of Green Tea Country

Our Norwegian Spirit cruise began with the port of Shimizu, famous for its views of Mount Fuji — but the mountain was shy that day, hiding behind a blanket of clouds.

Instead, we embraced Shimizu’s other speciality: green tea. We enjoyed a calming cup of matcha paired with delicate Japanese sweets, a perfect introduction to the region’s flavours. Even without Fuji in sight, Shimizu’s peaceful atmosphere and warm welcome made it a memorable first stop.

Kyoto – Timeless Beauty

Kyoto felt like a step back in time. We wandered through the famous Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, its towering green stalks swaying gently above us, creating an almost magical light. The peaceful rustle of the leaves felt a world away from the bustle of the city.

We visited the Fushimi Inari Shrine, with its endless corridor of bright red torii gates, and took our time exploring the atmospheric streets of Gion, keeping an eye out for geisha.

At lunchtime, we enjoyed a traditional Japanese meal — beautifully presented seasonal dishes served with the care and artistry Kyoto is known for. Every turn in the city seemed to reveal another picture-perfect moment, steeped in centuries of tradition.

Hakodate – Gardens, Views & Local Brews

Hakodate charmed us from the start. We hopped on the city tram to the Botanical Garden, a peaceful escape filled with vibrant blooms and tranquil walking paths.

Afterwards, we made our way to a local brewery, sampling a few refreshing beers and enjoying the relaxed atmosphere. Later, we still found time to wander the bustling morning market and take in sweeping views from Mount Hakodate, where the sea breeze carried the scent of the north.

Otaru – Ropeway Views, Canal & Art

Otaru welcomed us with its beautiful mountain views, reached via a scenic ropeway ride that revealed the town and coastline from above. We took a peaceful stroll along the historic canal, its waters reflecting the old warehouses and lanterns.

A visit to the Otaru Art Museum gave us a taste of the city’s creative side, showcasing local and international works. It was a day of gentle sightseeing, blending natural beauty, history, and culture.

Sakata – Cultural Surprise

Sakata surprised us with its rich heritage from the days of rice trading. We explored historic storehouses and learned about the merchants who built the city’s prosperity.

Kanazawa – Ninjas, Geisha, Samurai & Gold

Kanazawa was full of surprises. We stepped into the fascinating Ninja Temple (Myōryū-ji), a place filled with hidden rooms, secret staircases, and clever defences designed to protect against intruders — more mind-bending than any modern escape room.

We wandered through the atmospheric geisha district, where beautifully preserved teahouses told stories of the city’s elegant past, and explored the old samurai residential area, with its earthen walls, narrow lanes, and homes that once belonged to high-ranking warriors.

And, of course, we couldn’t resist one of Kanazawa’s most famous indulgences — a gold-plated ice cream. Luxurious, creamy, and glittering in the sunlight, it was a delicious nod to the city’s renowned gold leaf tradition.

Hiroshima – Gardens, Castles & Reflection

Hiroshima offered a moving balance of beauty, history, and resilience. We began at the tranquil Shukkeien Garden, where winding paths, koi-filled ponds, and graceful bridges created a peaceful escape in the heart of the city.

From there, we explored the striking Hiroshima Castle, rebuilt after the war and standing proudly as a symbol of the city’s enduring spirit.

Our visit concluded at the poignant Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Museum, a deeply moving tribute to the lives lost and a reminder of the hope for a peaceful future.

Nagasaki – Layers of History & Hilltop Views

Nagasaki’s mix of Japanese and international influences told a unique story of trade and tragedy. We began our day with a trip up Mount Inasa, taking in panoramic views over the harbour and surrounding hills. The clear morning light revealed the city’s unique layout and its scenic position between mountains and sea.

We then visited poignant memorials and the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, a deeply moving place that told the city’s story through powerful exhibits and personal accounts. Strolling through hillside streets afterwards, we reflected on Nagasaki’s resilience and its role as a bridge between cultures.

Jeju Island – Waterfalls & Stone Legends

Our first stop in South Korea was Jeju Island, a place of dramatic natural beauty. We visited one of the island’s stunning waterfalls, where the rushing water cascaded into a serene pool surrounded by lush greenery.

We also explored the fascinating stone park, filled with sculptures and formations that tell the island’s volcanic and cultural history. Jeju’s landscapes felt almost otherworldly — a perfect blend of nature and heritage.

Seoul – The Perfect Finale

Our journey ended in vibrant Seoul. We began at the majestic Gyeongbokgung Palace, its grand gates guarded by colourful sentries, before wandering the charming lanes of Bukchon Hanok Village. Lunch was a feast at Gwangjang Market, where we tried everything from crispy mung bean pancakes to spicy tteokbokki.

In the evening, we gathered around a sizzling grill for an authentic Korean BBQ — cooking our own tender meats, loading plates with fresh sides, and toasting to the end of a remarkable adventure.

Final Thoughts

From Tokyo’s playful mix of tradition and fun to Seoul’s bustling markets, from peaceful gardens to powerful memorials, this trip was a tapestry of sights, flavours, and emotions. Every stop added a new chapter, and together they told the story of a once-in-a-lifetime journey.

If this has sparked your travel imagination — whether it’s Japan, South Korea, or beyond — I can create a bespoke trip that’s every bit as special as this one.
