Discovering Expedition Cruising with HX: From Hamburg to Helgoland

Lisa Byers on 05 May 2026

I’ve just returned from an incredible few days experiencing expedition cruising with HX, sailing onboard the modern hybrid-powered MS Fridtjof Nansen, and I am absolutely hooked.

I arrived in Hamburg ahead of our sailing, excited but not quite sure what to expect. Expedition cruising is very different to traditional ocean cruises, and this trip was all about immersing myself in that experience so I can share it with my clients first hand.

Stepping Aboard MS Fridtjof Nansen

Fridtjof Nansen is one of HX’s state-of-the-art hybrid-powered expedition ships, designed specifically for exploring some of the world’s most spectacular and fragile destinations in a more sustainable way. From the moment I stepped on board, it felt like a stylish Scandinavian boutique hotel at sea. It had stunning panoramic lounges where floor-to-ceiling windows keep the outside world in constant view and a calm, chic Nordic design with warm woods, soft textures, and clean lines. An impressive Science Centre, where guests can learn more about the destinations, wildlife, and ecosystems they are about to explore with expansive observation decks, perfectly positioned for spotting wildlife and soaking up the scenery. Every space on the ship is built around the idea of discovery, learning and adventure, without ever compromising on comfort.

Helgoland: Red Cliffs, Seals and History

Our voyage took us from Hamburg to the small German archipelago of Helgoland for two nights of exploration and discovery. Helgoland is a world of its own. From the moment we approached the island, the dramatic red cliffs, fresh North Sea air and sweeping views made it feel like we were arriving somewhere truly special. Every corner seemed to reveal something new. Striking rock formations and bird cliffs alive with seabirds, crystal clear light and that exhilarating feeling of being surrounded by open sea and quiet pathways winding past colourful houses and tiny fishing boats. One of my absolute highlights was watching seals lounging along the shoreline, completely relaxed and unbothered, entirely at home in this wild and beautiful part of the North Sea. It felt like we were guests in their world, not the other way round. Helgoland has a unique charm. There is a real sense of peace and disconnection from everyday life, the perfect backdrop for the kind of slow, immersive travel that expedition cruising offers.

I had the chance to step inside a real World War bunker, and it was one of the most surreal travel experiences I have had. Walking through narrow tunnels, standing in original rooms, and seeing how carefully everything has been preserved really brought history to life. It is impossible not to imagine what life must have been like for those sheltering there, and it truly puts things into perspective. These places are powerful reminders of the past, giving us an opportunity to pause, learn, reflect, and remember the stories of those who lived through such unimaginable times. It was one of the most thought provoking and emotionally resonant experiences I have had while travelling.

Life Onboard: Where the Adventure Begins

This trip was about much more than just the destinations. It was about understanding what makes expedition cruising so special and why so many travellers fall in love with it.

Onboard MS Fridtjof Nansen, I had time to

  • Explore the Science Centre and learn more about the regions HX visits, the wildlife we might encounter and the scientific projects that guests can get involved in
  • Visit the launch area where the small expedition boats depart, giving a real sense of how close you can get to nature and remote landing sites
  • Sample the beautiful à la carte dining, with relaxed yet refined restaurants and a focus on quality, local, and sustainable ingredients
  • Discover the wellness and fitness facilities, ideal for unwinding after a day of exploration out on deck or ashore

There is a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere onboard. The emphasis is not on formality or entertainment in the traditional cruise sense, but on curiosity, learning and a shared sense of adventure.

Why Expedition Cruising Feels So Different

Having now experienced it first hand, I can see why expedition travel captures people’s hearts.

It is about:

  • Getting closer to nature and wildlife, in a respectful and responsible way
  • Reaching remote places that are often only accessible by small expedition ships
  • Experiencing destinations in a completely different way, with expert guides, lectures, and opportunities to learn as you go
  • Creating the kind of memories that stay with you long after you return home
  • For anyone who loves the idea of combining comfort and style with true exploration, expedition cruising is a perfect fit.
