Athens Weekend Getaway
Athens
We have just enjoyed a fantastic three-night escape to Athens and it reminded me exactly why this city is such a brilliant choice for a short break. It combines everything, ancient history, warm Greek hospitality, rooftop cocktails, and even a day by the water, all within easy reach of the UK.
Where I Stayed – Brown Acropol
Fantastic central location, close enough to walk to many of the main sights and with views that took my breath away. The highlight was the rooftop of our hotel, which looked directly across to the illuminated Acropolis. The rooftop was a real all-rounder, a stylish bar and restaurant, perfect for relaxed lunches or sunset cocktails, with both indoor and outdoor seating so you can enjoy the views whatever the weather, and a few inviting hot tubs sprinkled around the terrace, ideal after a day of exploring. It felt like having our own little sanctuary above the city, a place to unwind, sip something cold and watch the Acropolis slowly light up as day turned to night.
Friday - Walking Through History at the Acropolis
On our first full day, we joined a two-hour guided walking tour of the Acropolis, with a guide, the site really comes alive. As you walk up the slopes, you hear stories about how Athenians lived, worshipped, and celebrated here, and how the buildings have survived wars, earthquakes, and thousands of years of history. At the top you pass through the Propylaea, the grand marble gateway that marks the formal entrance to this sacred space, before the main temples open out in front of you and you are face to face with the Parthenon, the iconic temple dedicated to Athena. Our tour gave just enough history and myth to be fascinating without ever feeling too heavy, and it was the perfect introduction to the city.
Friday Afternoon & Evening - Rooftops, Drinks & Greek Food
After the tour, we made our way through the streets and found a great rooftop bar/restaurant. It was the perfect spot to relax with a drink while still soaking up the views of the Acropolis and to sample delicious Greek dishes such as fresh salads, grilled meats and local specialities. We enjoyed al fresco dining as the daylight faded and the city lights began to twinkle. We lingered into the evening, sitting outside under the warm Athenian sky, with the Parthenon lit up above us.
Saturday - A Day at Lake Vouliagmeni
On Saturday we decided to have a relaxing day and head out of the city for a change of pace. On the recommendation of a friendly taxi driver, we visited Lake Vouliagmeni, a natural lake on the Athenian Riviera that feels a world away from the bustle of central Athens. We spent the day swimming in the lake’s warm, mineral-rich waters, relaxing on sunbeds and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. It is a lovely way to experience another side of Athens, combining the benefits of a spa-like lake with the charm of the nearby coast.
Across the road from the lake, we found a beautiful seafood restaurant with views of the sea. Here we tucked into fresh, locally caught fish, including a superb red sea bass, grilled simply to let the flavours shine, along with classic Greek sides and a chilled glass (or two) of local wine. We stayed until sunset, watching the sky change colour over the coast, the perfect way to end a relaxing day before flying home.
