Whales, Wilderness & Wine: Two Weeks on the Ultimate California Road Trip

Melissa Coleman on 18 Sept 2025

Fourteen nights, one open road and a state that feels like five holidays in one. From sunshiney San Diego and the glitter of Los Angeles, to whale‑spotting in Monterey, towering sequoia forests, Yosemite’s granite peaks, Gold Rush charm in Sacramento and sourdough by San Francisco Bay, this California road trip stitched together some of my favourite coastal and mountain moments into one unforgettable journey. If you have ever dreamed of cruising Highway 1, watching whales breach at sunset or standing beneath trees older than history itself, this two‑week itinerary might be exactly the inspiration you need for your own West Coast adventure.

14 Nights from San Diego to San Francisco: California in One Epic Road Trip

There is something magical about driving California: the ocean on one side, mountains on the other, and a new view around every bend. On our 14‑night road trip from San Diego to San Francisco we travelled at the end of September, enjoying warm, settled weather on the coast and cooler, crystal‑clear days in the mountains: perfect for sightseeing, gentle hikes and plenty of good food.

San Diego: Sunshine & Fish Tacos

We started in laid‑back San Diego, where the Pacific feels calm and welcoming. Days were warm but comfortable, with clear mornings ideal for walks along the waterfront. Out on the bay we spotted pelicans skimming the waves, cormorants drying their wings and seals popping up to say hello. Evenings were all about fish tacos, Baja‑style ceviche, grilled prawns and local craft beer as the sun went down.

Los Angeles: Coastal Energy & City Views

From San Diego we hugged the coast up to Los Angeles, enjoying that “second summer” feel: blue skies, warm days and balmy evenings. We split our time between city and sea, strolling along Santa Monica and Venice Beach (watching surfers and distant dolphins) and walking up to Griffith Observatory for sweeping views and red‑tailed hawks circling overhead. Food in LA was a highlight in itself: one night Korean BBQ, the next Mexican street‑style favourites, plus açai bowls and great coffee to fuel the driving.

Monterey: Whales, Otters & Ocean Air

Joining legendary Highway 1, we wound our way north along cliffs and coves to Monterey. September here meant big‑sky ocean views without the intense summer heat. A whale‑watching trip delivered humpback whales breaching in the distance, sea otters floating on their backs and sea lions lazing on the rocks. We ate clam chowder in sourdough bowls on the wharf, grilled local fish and simple fish and chips overlooking the harbour.

Sequoia & Yosemite: Giant Trees & Granite Peaks

Leaving the coast, we headed into the Sierra Nevada for a complete change of scenery. In Sequoia National Park the air turned cooler and pine‑scented, with pleasantly fresh days and crisp nights. We wandered among groves of giant sequoias, spotting mule deer, squirrels and the odd fox darting into the trees, then picnicking on fresh bread, cheese and fruit under the canopy.

In Yosemite, late September brought golden light and ideal walking weather: t‑shirt warm in the sun, cool in the shade. On the valley trails we saw deer grazing at the forest edge, chipmunks and ground squirrels, and a distant black bear crossing an open meadow. Days were filled with hikes and viewpoints; evenings with simple, hearty food and a memorable slice of apple pie as the last light hit the granite walls.

Sacramento: Old‑West Charm & Farm‑to‑Fork

Dropping back to the lowlands, we paused in Sacramento for a taste of Old California. We wandered along the wooden boardwalks of Old Sacramento, past Gold Rush‑era buildings, watching herons and ducks in the shallows at sunset. Dinner was classic farm‑to‑fork: seasonal vegetables, local wines and a relaxed patio setting in the warm evening air.

San Francisco: Cable Cars & Sourdough

Our journey ended in San Francisco, often at its best in late September with milder days and clearer skies. Down by the bay we watched sea lions jostling for space around Pier 39 and seabirds circling as ferries crossed to Alcatraz and Sausalito. Food was a delicious finale: clam chowder and crab in sourdough bowls, dim sum in Chinatown, seafood at the Ferry Building and excellent coffee and pastries in neighbourhood cafés.

Why This Route Works

In just two weeks this road trip gives you: sun‑drenched coastal cities, marine wildlife around Monterey, ancient forests and mountain landscapes in Sequoia and Yosemite, historic charm in Sacramento and a world‑class finale in San Francisco. Travelling in late September meant quieter roads and trails, comfortable temperatures and that lovely shift from summer to autumn.

If this has you dreaming of California, I can tailor this route around your pace and priorities, from extra hiking days in the mountains to more time by the ocean or a deeper focus on food and wine.
