Why I love Greece

There’s something about the Greek islands that stays with you long after you’ve unpacked your suitcase. It’s not just the sunshine or the scenery, it’s the feeling. Slower mornings, long lunches that turn into sunsets, and that unmistakable warmth you only seem to find in Greece.

For me, that love started years ago.  As a child, travelling to places like Corfu, Kefalonia, Skopelos, Skiathos, and many other Greek islands, with my parents felt like stepping into a different world. I still remember the excitement of arriving, the heat as you stepped off the plane, the scent of suncream and sea air, and that first glimpse of turquoise water that never quite looks the same anywhere else.

Greece

Those holidays were simple, but they were everything. Lazy days by the pool, exploring the island by car to a hidden cove that was usually a mile walk down a track but completely deserted, little tavernas in the evenings along with a shot of something sweet that the taverna owners gave us instead of their favourite alcoholic after-meal tipple that my parents got encouraged to enjoy, and trying foods I’d never had before (even if I was a bit fussy back then!). Looking back, it wasn’t about where we stayed or what we did, it was about how it felt. Safe, happy, and completely carefree.

And somehow, it has always stood out.  There’s just something about it. The lush greenery, the mix of beautiful beaches and traditional villages, and that perfect balance of relaxation and things to explore. It’s an island that works for everyone, whether you want to completely switch off or venture out and see more.

Authentic Greece

Fast forward to now, and it feels quite special to be creating those same kinds of memories, but with my own children.

Taking them and watching them experience it for the first time has been one of those “full circle” moments. The same excitement, the same joy… just from a different perspective. And now, I understand what my parents must have felt all those years ago.

One thing that’s definitely changed though - the food!

After living in Cyprus for a year, I completely fell in love with fresh Greek cuisine again.  It’s simple, but it’s done so well. Fresh salads, grilled meats, seafood, warm bread, olive oil… it’s the kind of food you genuinely look forward to every single day.

Fresh food

And now? My kids are exactly the same.

There’s something quite lovely about sitting in a little taverna, watching them tuck into dishes like they’ve been eating it all their lives. No complaints, no fuss, just good food, enjoyed together. It’s become a huge part of why we love going back.

Because that’s the thing about the Greek islands, they’re not just a “one and done” destination. They draw you back in, time and time again. Each visit feels familiar, but still just as special.

And while there are so many incredible islands to explore, Acharavi in Corfu will always have that extra pull for me.

It’s where my love for Greece began.

It’s where some of my favourite childhood memories were made.

And now, it’s where my children are starting to create their own.

And honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way ✈️
