Explore Uzbekistan’s Silk Road cities

Your adventure begins in Tashkent, Uzbekistan’s capital, where grand Soviet-era architecture sits alongside much older neighbourhoods and monuments. Head into Chorsu Bazaar, one of Central Asia’s oldest markets, where stalls are piled with spices, dried fruit, nuts, breads, and local produce beneath its distinctive blue dome. It’s a great introduction to everyday life in the city, with your local leader helping you get beneath the surface of the capital.
-
Next, you’ll be in Samarkand, one of the great cities of the Silk Road. At its heart is Registan Square, framed by three enormous madrasahs covered in intricate mosaics and blue tiles, while nearby Shah-i-Zinda is known for its avenue of elaborately decorated mausoleums. Your time here also takes you beyond the landmarks, with a visit to a local family for a hands-on cooking class. You’ll learn how to prepare plov, Uzbekistan’s much-loved rice dish, before sitting down together to enjoy what you’ve made.
-
From Samarkand, continue to Bukhara, regarded as one of Uzbekistan’s holiest cities. Your local leader will introduce you to sights including the Ark Fortress, Kalon Minaret, and the old trading domes, where merchants once bought and sold goods travelling along the Silk Road. There’s also time to explore Bukhara’s atmospheric old streets, browse handicrafts, jewellery, embroidery, and spices, and see how traditions have been passed down through generations.
-
Throughout the adventure, you’ll spend seven nights in comfortable hotels, alongside two nights in a unique property in Bukhara. Here, a historic heritage building has been converted into a boutique hotel, giving you the chance to stay within the old city itself. As a protected historic property, rooms can be more compact than those in conventional hotels, but they retain plenty of individual character and provide a memorable base for exploring Bukhara.
