Your trip begins in Venice, where canals, grand palazzos, and historic squares set the scene for your first few days. Spend time around St Mark’s Square, visit the Doge’s Palace, cross the Rialto Bridge, or head into quieter neighbourhoods such as Dorsoduro for small galleries, waterside restaurants, and traditional bacari. In the evening, settle in for cicchetti and a glass of local wine before seeing the city at a slower pace once many of the daytime visitors have left.

Next, you’ll travel by rail to Florence, swapping Venice’s waterways for the historic streets of Tuscany’s capital. The city is easy to explore on foot, with the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Piazza della Signoria, Ponte Vecchio, and the Uffizi Gallery all within easy reach. There’s plenty to enjoy beyond the headline sights too, from browsing the stalls of Mercato Centrale to stopping at a neighbourhood trattoria for fresh pasta and classic Tuscan dishes.

While in Florence, take some time to explore the city’s connection to the Renaissance. Michelangelo’s David at the Accademia Gallery is one of its most famous works, while the churches, palaces, and piazzas tell the story of the influential Medici family. For a different perspective, cross the Arno into Oltrarno, an area known for independent workshops, artisan studios, traditional restaurants, and a more local feel.
