Athens, Islands & the Peloponnese: A Sophisticated Greek Escape

Paul Sharp on 01 Sept 2024

Greece is so much more than a classic island escape. For travellers who love stylish city breaks and unspoilt coastlines, combining Athens with the nearby Athens Riviera, Cape Sounio, Aegina and the Peloponnese creates a wonderfully balanced Greek getaway. Think mornings wandering ancient streets and elegant neighbourhoods, afternoons by the sea, and evenings spent lingering over incredible food and local wine. As a self-confessed Grecophile, this is one of my favourite ways to experience Greece: a blend of culture, coastline and quietly luxurious, authentically Greek moments.

Greece is, without doubt, one of my favourite European destinations and I love helping my clients discover it, especially those less well known parts. While many travellers are drawn to the glamour of the islands scattered across the Ionian and Aegean seas, the mainland offers a quieter, more authentic kind of luxury that often surprises my clients: elegant city stays, unspoilt beaches, and a real sense of place.

Athens: elegant city break with depth

Acropolis

On my most recent visit, we flew into Athens and based ourselves in Kolonaki, one of the city’s most refined neighbourhoods. Think polished pavements, leafy squares, designer boutiques and a café culture that effortlessly blends business, fashion and relaxed Mediterranean living. It is the ideal base if you enjoy stylish surroundings and want to feel part of local life rather than simply passing through.

Days here start slowly, with strong coffee and something flaky and delicious at a pavement café. Take a seat, order a glass of crisp local wine or a refreshing spritz later in the day, and settle in for some serious people watching. Menus celebrate Greece’s rich culinary heritage:

  • Gigantes plaki, slow-cooked butter beans in a rich tomato and herb sauce
  • Spanakopita, layers of delicate filo filled with spinach and salty feta

Simple dishes, beautifully prepared, that feel indulgent without being fussy.

When you can tear yourself away from the sun-soaked terraces, Athens rewards you with culture at every turn. Make time to stroll to Syntagma Square to watch the changing of the guard, a surprisingly moving and theatrical experience. No first-time visit is complete without the Parthenon and the Acropolis, and I always recommend visiting later in the afternoon when the light softens, the crowds thin, and the city below begins to glow.

One of the highlights of our stay was a guided electric bike tour of Athens. It was an effortless way to cover a lot of ground, glide through atmospheric neighbourhoods and quiet backstreets, and see the city from different vantage points, all with the insight of a knowledgeable local guide. For clients who like to maximise their time but prefer not to rush, this is a superb way to orientate yourselves and pick out favourite spots to return to.

Beyond the centre: Athens Riviera, Cape Sounio and Aegina

One of the joys of using Athens as your base is how easy it is to blend culture with coastal relaxation and island life.

Just a short drive from the city centre, the Athens Riviera stretches along the Saronic Gulf with smart beach clubs, marinas and sunset-facing promenades. It is perfect for a leisurely lunch by the water, a swim in the Aegean without leaving the mainland, or a cocktail as the sky turns pink.

Further along the coast, Cape Sounio offers one of the most spectacular settings in mainland Greece. The Temple of Poseidon stands high on a headland, overlooking the sea, and sunset here is truly special: soft golden light, sweeping views and a real sense of history. It works beautifully as a half-day or evening trip from the city, especially if you combine it with a relaxed dinner by the water.  If you are a seafood fan you will be spoilt for choice

For a taste of island life without a long ferry journey, Aegina makes an ideal day trip from Athens. This charming Saronic island offers pretty harbour views, neoclassical mansions, inviting swimming spots and excellent pistachios, for which it is famous. It is an easy, relaxed way to experience Greece’s island atmosphere while still basing yourself in the capital

From city to coast: discovering the Peloponnese

After soaking up the energy of Athens, we headed to the Peloponnese, which offers a beautifully balanced contrast: relaxed, authentic and gently luxurious, with some of the best food and coastline in Greece.  I have been here many times, I love it that much!

If you prefer to go straight to the Peloponnese, the nearest airport is Kalamata, renowned for its world-class olives and olive oil. For those starting in Athens, you can either drive (around 2.5 hours) or let someone else take the wheel and travel by bus. Services to Kalamata run roughly every three hours, with allocated seating and journey times of around 3 hours 15 minutes. It is an easy, comfortable way to travel, and you can sit back, relax and take in the dramatic scenery, including the striking Corinth Canal.

Kalamata and the surrounding region are especially popular with Greek travellers, which is always a good sign. It makes a wonderful base from which to explore the wider Peloponnese: atmospheric archaeological sites, Venetian castles and a coastline that feels far less commercial than many of the better-known islands.

Within about 45 minutes of Kalamata you reach some truly exceptional beaches, including Stoupa. Here you will find a crescent of golden sand, clear turquoise water, and a charming mix of small hotels, apartments, tavernas and relaxed beachside restaurants. It feels intimate and personal, rather than built up, and at certain times of year you may even be lucky enough to see turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs in the sand.

An authentic, quietly luxurious Greek escape

What I love most about the Peloponnese, particularly combined with a few nights in Athens, is the balance it offers. You can enjoy:

  • A sophisticated city stay in one of Europe’s most historic capitals
  • Lazy beach days in a region that still feels genuinely Greek
  • Excellent food and wine, with a strong focus on local produce
  • Warm, genuine hospitality that makes you feel more like a guest than a tourist

The people are as warm as the weather: friendly, welcoming, and proud to share their traditions. Together, Athens and the Peloponnese create a memorable European holiday that feels both enriching and restorative: mornings among ancient monuments, evenings in elegant neighbourhoods, and days by the sea where time seems to slow right down.
