Beyond Marrakech: Cosmopolitan Casablanca & a Luxurious Atlantic Retreat

Paul Sharp on 01 Jun 2024

Morocco: a North African jewel where Atlantic waves meet Mediterranean light. A true crossroads of cultures, it blends Arab, Berber and European influences from France, Spain and Portugal into something completely unique. While Marrakech remains popular, where else can you discover?

For many travellers, Morocco begins and ends with Marrakech, but I always encourage my clients to look beyond the obvious. Casablanca, in particular, offers a fascinating, often overlooked introduction to the country, especially for those who enjoy stylish city stays with a coastal twist.

Casablanca: cosmopolitan, coastal and quietly glamorous

Once one of the most important cities of the Berber kingdom, Casablanca has experienced Portuguese rule and later French colonisation before Morocco gained independence in 1955. Today, with over 3.5 million inhabitants, it feels dynamic and forward-looking: French colonial facades and traditional Moroccan buildings sit alongside sleek, contemporary architecture, reflecting a city very much focused on progress and innovation.

For many visitors, the Hassan II Mosque is the undisputed highlight. Dramatically positioned on the oceanfront, it is one of the largest mosques in the world, with intricate mosaics, carved stonework and painted ceilings that are simply breathtaking. The prayer hall can welcome up to 25,000 worshippers at any one time, and a guided tour offers a fascinating insight into both the craftsmanship and spiritual significance of the building. As with all sacred spaces, dressing respectfully is essential.

Markets, medinas and refined shopping

Casablanca’s historic medina is a sensory experience: stalls piled high with heady spices, colourful leather babouches (traditional Moroccan slippers), hand-painted ceramics and shimmering glass lamps. It is the perfect place to practise the art of haggling, which is very much part of the culture here.

If you prefer a calmer, more refined atmosphere for your shopping, head to Quartier Habous. Often described as the “new medina”, it was built in the 1930s close to the Royal Palace with the aim of combining Moroccan tradition and French urban planning. Here, whitewashed arcades, elegant bookshops and artisan boutiques make it a delightful place to browse for high-quality souvenirs, from finely worked leather to beautiful ceramics and delicacies to take home.

Sunset on the Corniche and a touch of Hollywood

After a day exploring the city’s cultural and historic highlights, the Corniche is the place to unwind. Popular with Moroccan holidaymakers, this oceanfront promenade brings together upscale hotels, bars and restaurants, all perfectly positioned for sea views and sunsets over the Atlantic. Whether you choose a chic rooftop bar for sundowners or a relaxed terrace directly on the water, it is a wonderful way to end the day.

For a touch of cinematic nostalgia, a visit to Rick’s Café is almost obligatory. Set in a courtyard-style mansion built against the walls of the Old Medina, it has been created to evoke the atmosphere of the bar made famous by Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in the film “Casablanca”. Think carved wood, ambient lighting, live piano music and classic cocktails, all wrapped up in a distinctly Moroccan setting.

Mazagan Beach & Golf Resort - seaside bliss

Around an hour from Casablanca lies one of my favourite Moroccan escapes: the coastline near El Jadida, home to the luxurious Mazagan Beach & Golf Resort. This 5-star retreat is set along an impressive sweep of sandy beach and combines contemporary design with subtle Moroccan touches.

Rooms are designed with comfort and style in mind, many overlooking the lush gardens or the resort’s central pool area. There is a generous choice of restaurants and bars, from relaxed poolside spots to more refined dining, alongside a world-class spa that is perfect for easing into holiday mode.

For those who enjoy an active break, the facilities are outstanding. The resort offers access to one of Morocco’s largest golf courses, along with a wide range of sports and leisure options. The main pool is expansive yet cleverly designed so it never feels crowded, and just a few steps away the Atlantic Ocean awaits: soft sand, comfortable loungers and private cabanas for those who like a little extra privacy.

If you are in search of adventure, this coastline really delivers. Wind and kitesurfing, horse riding or camel riding along the beach, and quad biking in the surrounding landscape are all available, allowing you to experience a more exhilarating side of Morocco without sacrificing comfort.

A sophisticated Moroccan escape

When I talk to premium leisure travellers about Morocco, I always highlight this balance: vibrant cities with compelling history and culture, combined with relaxed coastal retreats that offer space, style and superb service.

In Casablanca and along the coast you can enjoy:

  • A cosmopolitan city stay with striking architecture and rich cultural layers
  • Time in elegant neighbourhoods and markets that feel authentic rather than overly touristic
  • Sunset cocktails and fine dining overlooking the Atlantic
  • A sophisticated beach resort stay with excellent wellness, golf and activity options

If you are curious about Morocco and would like to explore how Casablanca and the Atlantic coast could fit into your next trip, I would be delighted to help you design something tailored around the way you like to travel, with just the right balance of culture, relaxation and indulgence.
