Budapest & Beyond: From Urban Oasis To Fairytale Castle

Paul Sharp on 29 Nov 2025

Do you ever come back from a trip and ask "why have I not been there sooner?" In late November 2025 I was invited to go to Budapest and it blew me away. Check out my blog detailing my wonderful weekend in Hungary's beautiful Capital city

Arriving in Budapest on a crisp late November Friday felt like stepping straight into a postcard. I travelled with my colleague Stu, and this was a new destination for us both, despite having 60+ years combined experience in the travel industry!

Budapest architecture

Throughout the day, our group touched down at Budapest Airport in staggered waves, each of us greeted by a waiting driver holding our name. Within moments we were winding our way into the city, heading for our home for the next two nights: Verno House.

Verno House: An Urban Oasis In The Heart Of Budapest

Verno House Hotel exterior

Verno House describes itself as an urban oasis where you can bond, breathe and bloom, and it lives up to that promise from the second you step inside. With just 48 rooms and suites, it has a boutique, intimate feel, yet sits right at the corner of Szabadság Street and October 6th Street, in the very heart of Budapest.

The location is a dream: a short stroll brings you to the Danube, and the city’s major sights and vibrant neighbourhoods are all within easy reach. It is the sort of place where you can spend the morning exploring and then retreat back to a calming, design-led sanctuary without ever needing a taxi.

For those who arrived early on the Friday, our educational started with a fascinating introduction to the city’s architecture and history. At 2 pm we gathered in the lobby and set off for a guided walk to one of the iconic buildings overlooking Szabadság Square: the Adria Palace, once the headquarters of the Hungarian Ocean Steam Navigation Company. It is the kind of building you might admire from the outside without ever realising the stories it holds within, so having it brought to life by a guide was a real treat.

Later in the afternoon, we had a site inspection of Verno House itself. It was a chance to see the different room types, explore the public spaces and get a feel for how the property would work for couples, small groups or a full buyout. The emphasis on calm, greenery and wellness makes it particularly appealing for clients who want a sophisticated city break with space to unwind.

Flava Restaurant & A Speakeasy Surprise

Our first evening began at Flava, the stylish restaurant inside Verno House. We enjoyed a dinner that showcased a fusion of global flavours in the heart of downtown Budapest. The menu we experienced ranged from North African and Latin American influences to Middle Eastern-inspired dishes, all sitting comfortably alongside refined takes on traditional Hungarian cuisine. It felt playful yet polished, and ideal for clients who love to experiment with food without leaving their hotel.

After dinner, we were treated to something very special: pre-opening drinks at Lazy Lion Bar, a speakeasy-style bar set to open soon. Being invited in as pre-opening guests gave us a preview of the atmosphere our clients can expect: moody lighting, creative cocktails and a tucked-away feel that makes it perfect for a nightcap after dinner or a private celebration.  If you are on the look out for an achingly stylish destination bar in Budapest, this must be on your list!

Saturday: Design, Dining & Christmas Magic In The City

Saturday began gently with breakfast at Flava : a relaxed way to ease into the day and a good opportunity to take in the morning buzz of the hotel.

Afterwards, we headed to a Herendi porcelain rose workshop. Herendi is one of Hungary’s most famous porcelain manufacturers, and the workshop gave us a hands-on insight into the craftsmanship behind the delicate pieces you so often see in elegant hotels and historic homes. It is a lovely idea for clients who enjoy creative, cultural activities and want to bring home something meaningful they have made themselves.

By midday it was time for lunch at Bibo by Dani García, where Spanish flair meets Hungarian ingredients. The concept is all about the perfect fusion of Spanish and Hungarian gastronomy: think bold flavours, sophisticated plating and a relaxed yet stylish setting. It is an excellent recommendation for food-loving clients who want something a little special without it feeling overly formal.

Budapest In Festive Dress

The afternoon was dedicated to Budapest in full festive mode. We explored the Christmas markets at Vörösmarty Square and around St. Stephen’s Basilica, the largest church in Budapest and part of the city’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed area.

Stalls selling handcrafted decorations, local delicacies and steaming cups of mulled wine lined the squares, with the basilica providing a breathtaking backdrop. For clients travelling in late November and December, the Christmas markets add a wonderful extra layer of atmosphere to any city break.

After all the festive sightseeing, we had some much-needed “recharge time”. Some of the group returned to Verno House to relax, while others took the chance to wander the surrounding streets, discovering cafés, boutiques and side streets at their own pace. It highlighted how well the hotel’s location works for clients who like to dip in and out of the city as the mood takes them.

Pre-Theatre Dining & An Immersive Evening

Early evening, we enjoyed a pre-theatre menu at Alelí by Dani García, an Italian osteria in Budapest. Cosy, convivial and full of flavour, it was a contrast to lunch yet equally memorable: simple dishes done beautifully, with the kind of warmth that makes it easy to linger.

This particular evening was one of the most unique experiences of the trip: the “Recirquel Walk My World” show at Millenáris. This is an immersive 2.5-hour performance blending circus arts and contemporary dance, drawing you into a dreamlike world of movement, music and storytelling. It felt imaginative and unexpected, a great suggestion for clients who appreciate performing arts and want something beyond a standard theatre show.  No mobile phones allowed, so no photos to share of this one

Sunday: From River Views To Fairytale Castle

After enjoying a final relaxed breakfast at Flava, we swapped city streets for the water and we embarked on a sightseeing cruise along the Danube. Seeing Budapest from the river is essential: from this vantage point, the city’s grand architecture, sweeping bridges and famous landmarks line up like a carefully curated gallery.  It was time then to leave the capital behind and transfer to BOTANIQ Castle of Tura, just 40 minutes from Budapest but truly another world.

BOTANIQ Tura

BOTANIQ Castle of Tura: A Fairytale Escape

BOTANIQ Castle of Tura feels like stepping into a storybook. This enchanting castle was originally built in 1883 by Baron Sigmund Schossberger as a declaration of love for his wife, and that romantic spirit still lingers in every corner.  You see lots of travel writing that talks about it being a "pinch me" moment, but it truly was a phenomenal experience and such a treat to stay here.

Today, it operates as an exclusive-use style property perfect for buyouts and small groups, with one of the most impressive blends of history and contemporary luxury in Hungary. The castle has been transformed into a chic retreat with a full-service spa, professional tennis courts, a gym surrounded by forest, and 10 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens. There is a lake, picnic-perfect parkland, a rose garden, and both outdoor and indoor heated pools.

Inside, the grand staircase, colourful drawing rooms and 19 individually designed guest rooms and suites all feel opulent yet inviting. Details like handmade cashmere mattresses add a layer of indulgence that clients will notice as soon as they sink into bed. It is the kind of place that is ideal for milestone celebrations, intimate incentives or multi-generational stays where privacy and wow-factor are key.

We arrived at lunchtime to a welcome selection of bites, followed by check in and a full site visit. Walking through the castle, you can instantly picture wedding parties strolling through the gardens, small corporate groups gathering in elegant salons, or families taking over the entire property for a once-in-a-lifetime stay.

Adventure Or Wellness: Tailored To You

In the afternoon we had a choice as to what we wanted to do. Some headed out to a clay pigeon shooting range for an afternoon of country-sport style activity, ideal for more adventurous clients or incentive groups looking for team-building. Others opted to stay at the castle, immersing themselves in massages, spa rituals and the thermal experiences on offer.

I chose to simply recharge and enjoy the quiet luxury of the castle. After a a stroll through the gardens, it was time for a dip in the pool, followed by a while in one of the grand drawing rooms, there was space for everyone to unwind in their own way.

Taking it easy in the spa

Later that evening, we gathered for a another highlight of the trip: dinner with wine pairing in the castle’s spectacular Palm House. Surrounded by greenery and glass, this space feels both intimate and dramatic. BOTANIQ boasts one of the most extensive wine selections in Hungary, with more than 200 varieties on offer. The carefully curated pairings showcased just how rich and diverse Hungarian wine culture can be, and it is an experience I would strongly recommend building into any stay here.

Monday: A Gentle Farewell

Monday was departure day, and after breakfast at Clarisse Restaurant, it marked the end of a beautifully balanced educational: two nights in a stylish urban oasis in the heart of Budapest, followed by a night in a fairytale castle surrounded by forest and gardens. Across city and countryside, food, wine, culture and wellness, the trip offered a wealth of inspiration for tailoring future itineraries to couples, small groups and exclusive-use celebrations.

If you are considering Budapest for a city break, a festive escape or a special-occasion trip with a twist, this city is a gem - I will be back, I just ask myself why it took me this long!

If you are looking for a city break with a difference and you want it thoughtfully curated, please get in touch, as I would love to help you discover Budapest.
