Responsible Travel: My Top 5 Tips for Travelling More Sustainably Without Sacrificing Luxury

Thea Gillingham on 13 May 2026

Sustainable and responsible travel have become some of the biggest conversations in the travel industry and rightly so. As travellers, we all want to continue exploring the world’s most beautiful destinations, but we also have a responsibility to protect them for future generations. The good news is that travelling more responsibly does not mean giving up luxury hotels, bucket list experiences or unforgettable adventures.

As a TTG Sustainable Travel Hero 2025 and finalist for Responsible Luxury Travel Designer of the Year at the TTG Luxury Travel Awards 2026, responsible travel is something I am hugely passionate about both personally and professionally. From luxury safaris in South Africa to tailor made journeys through Japan, New Zealand and Egypt, I work closely with clients to help create incredible holidays that also have a more positive impact on the destinations they visit.

So, I thought I would share my top five tips for travelling more positively and responsibly without compromising on comfort, experience or the magic of seeing the world.

What Is Responsible Travel?

Responsible travel means making conscious travel choices that help minimise negative environmental impact whilst supporting local communities, protecting wildlife and preserving cultural heritage.

It is not about travelling perfectly or never flying again. Instead, it is about travelling smarter and making better choices where possible.

Responsible tourism can include...

1. Respect Local Cultures and Communities

One of the most important aspects of responsible tourism is respecting the destinations and communities we visit.

Before travelling, take time to learn about local customs, traditions and etiquette. Something as simple as dressing appropriately at religious sites, learning a few words of the local language or understanding cultural norms can completely change the quality of your travel experience.<

Not only does this show respect to local communities, but it also often leads to more authentic and meaningful travel moments.

Some easy ways to support local communities whilst travelling include:

• Booking local guides and tours

• Shopping with local artisans

• Eating in independent restaurants

• Attending cultural experiences run by local people

• Learning about the history and traditions of the destination

When tourism is done well, it can directly support local livelihoods and preserve cultural heritage for generations to come.

2. Choose Lower Impact Travel Options

Travel will always create some level of environmental impact, particularly long haul travel, but there are ways to reduce your carbon footprint whilst still seeing the world.

One of the easiest changes travellers can make is choosing direct flights where possible, as take off and landing create the highest emissions during a journey. Travelling with lighter luggage can also help reduce fuel consumption.

For multi centre holidays, rail travel can sometimes be a fantastic alternative to short internal flights. Countries such as Japan, Switzerland and parts of Europe have exceptional train networks that are not only more sustainable but also part of the travel experience itself.

Another growing trend within sustainable luxury travel is travelling slower:

• Spending longer in fewer destinations

• Taking fewer but more meaningful trips

• Combining multiple experiences into one larger itinerary

Personally, I also partner with Trees4Travel, allowing my clients to offset the carbon emissions associated with their holidays through global tree planting and climate projects.

Responsible travel is not about never flying. It is about making more informed and balanced travel choices.

3. Support Local Hotels, Restaurants and Small Businesses

Supporting local businesses is one of the most powerful ways travellers can positively impact a destination.

Choosing locally owned boutique hotels, independent restaurants, artisan shops and regional experiences means tourism revenue stays within the local economy and directly benefits the people who live there.

Many luxury travellers are surprised to discover that some of the most unique and high end travel experiences in the world are actually independently owned properties deeply connected to their local communities.

This could include:

• Luxury safari lodges supporting conservation projects

• Boutique riads in Morocco employing local artisans

• Family owned vineyards and wineries

• Eco lodges investing in wildlife protection

• Community led tourism initiatives

Luxury travel and sustainable travel absolutely can work together beautifully. In fact, some of the world’s best luxury travel experiences are also leading the way in responsible tourism and environmental conservation.

4. Protect Wildlife and Natural Environments

Wildlife tourism has become increasingly popular, but unfortunately not all animal experiences are ethical.

When planning a holiday, it is important to research wildlife encounters carefully and choose companies that prioritise conservation, education and animal welfare.

Ethical wildlife travel should allow animals to behave naturally within their environment rather than being used purely for entertainment.

Responsible wildlife travel tips include:

• Avoid animal performances or exploitative attractions

• Choose conservation led safari operators

• Use reef safe sunscreen when snorkelling or diving

• Stay on designated walking trails

• Never remove natural items from protected areas

• Reduce single use plastics whilst travelling

Some of the most unforgettable travel experiences come from seeing wildlife in its natural habitat whilst knowing your visit contributes positively towards conservation efforts.

5. Reduce Plastic Waste Whilst Travelling

Plastic waste continues to be a major issue in many tourist destinations around the world, particularly in coastal and island locations.

Fortunately, reducing waste whilst travelling can often be incredibly simple.

Some easy sustainable travel swaps include:

• Carrying a reusable water bottle

• Bringing reusable shopping bags

• Using refillable toiletries

• Carrying reusable coffee cups and cutlery

• Avoiding unnecessary packaging where possible

Even small habits can significantly reduce the amount of waste generated during a trip.

As a travel designer, I have also tried to reduce paper waste within my own business by using digital travel documentation wherever possible.

Luxury Travel and Responsible Travel Can Go Hand in Hand

There is a common misconception that sustainable travel means sacrificing comfort or luxury, but in reality, many luxury travel brands are now leading the industry when it comes to sustainability, conservation and community support.

Some of the most exceptional luxury travel experiences now focus heavily on:

• Conservation initiatives

• Locally sourced food

• Community partnerships

• Eco conscious design

• Renewable energy

• Wildlife protection

• Cultural preservation

Travelling responsibly does not mean travelling less well. Often, it actually creates more immersive, authentic and meaningful experiences.

Final Thoughts on Responsible Travel

Responsible travel is not about perfection. It is about awareness, balance and making better choices where we can.

Whether that is supporting local communities, reducing waste, choosing ethical wildlife experiences or simply travelling more thoughtfully, every small decision can help create a more positive impact.

Travel has the power to educate, inspire and connect people across the world and I truly believe tourism can continue to be a force for good when approached responsibly.
