Why KZN Might Be South Africa’s Best-Kept Safari Secret
When people think of a safari in South Africa, their minds usually jump straight to Kruger or perhaps the Eastern Cape along the Garden Route. But after my recent trip, I can confidently say that a KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) safari is one of the most underrated safari experiences in the country. And honestly, it pleasantly surprised even me… a regular safari-goer and, I’ll admit it, a bit of a safari snob. So if you’re looking for something a little different, a little more varied, and often a little less crowded, here’s why KZN deserves your attention....
A Malaria-Free Safari in South Africa
One of the biggest barriers for many people when considering a safari in South Africa is malaria. The beauty of much of KZN is that it offers a malaria-free safari in South Africa, meaning you can enjoy a truly wild experience without needing to factor in medication. And let’s be honest, it’s not exactly a fun tablet to take, and we’ve all heard at least one horror story about the dreams those tablets can bring.
There are areas in the far northeast where there is a low risk during the transmission season from September to May. However, even the NHS advice is centred around awareness and bite avoidance rather than the use of medication.
A More Diverse South Africa Safari Experience
What really sets a KwaZulu-Natal safari apart is the diversity of the experience on offer beyond simply your standard game drive. One area that does this particularly well is iSimangaliso Wetland Park, where your day can start with a game drive, turn into a boat safari by lunchtime spotting hippos and crocodiles, and end with time on the beach in the afternoon.
It is also a paradise for birdlife, with over 500 species recorded. Even myself, I found I suddenly became a bit of an amateur twitcher whilst exploring KZN. It is hard not to be impressed by the sheer volume and colours of the birdlife around you.
Personally, I stayed at Makakatana Bay Lodge, one of the best positioned lodges within the wetland park itself. You are completely immersed in the environment, where your morning coffee might come with warthogs and buck wandering past. A typical outing might see you spotting giraffe, elephant and numerous types of buck on a game drive, before heading onto the estuary with a guide like Warwick, who has spent decades navigating these waterways and knows the hippo families inside out.
Big Five Safari without the Crowds
If you’re looking for a Big Five safari experience, KZN absolutely delivers. And it’s not just limited to one standout reserve, there are numerous high-quality reserves across the region offering consistently strong wildlife viewing.
Zuka is one reserve home to lodges such as Bayala (where I stayed), with other more elevated options like Sungulwane and &Beyond Phinda. All of these lodges traverse across the same land, so the wildlife experience remains consistent regardless of where you stay.
From a safari perspective, it really delivers. We saw the Big Five within just three game drives, with the leopard coming on that third drive, and alongside that also saw cheetah and spotted hyena. What stood out most, though, was the space. There were no queues of vehicles, aside from the leopard sighting, and even then it was capped at just three vehicles. Everything is very well managed, with strict vehicle limits and the ability to off-road where it is safe to do so without damaging the vegetation, allowing for those proper, up-close encounters.

A Safari with Culture: The Zulu Heritage of KZN
What really stood out to me in KZN is how seamlessly the wildlife experience is combined with a genuine sense of culture and place. In some parts of South Africa, lodges can feel more design-led or modern, sometimes lacking that deeper connection to their surroundings. In KZN, it feels very different. There is a strong sense of Zulu heritage that runs throughout the lodges and properties, from the design and materials used, through to the storytelling, guiding and overall atmosphere.
It feels authentic rather than curated, and that connection to local culture adds a completely different layer to the safari experience. If this is something that particularly interests you, it is very easy to expand a KwaZulu-Natal safari itinerary beyond wildlife and include more heritage and history aspects, with areas such as the Drakensberg Mountains or the historic Battlefields region.
Safari and Beach in South Africa: The Perfect Combination
One of the biggest advantages of a KZN safari is how easily you can combine it with a beach stay.
For something more remote and nature-led, Thonga Beach Lodge offers a beautifully wild stretch of coastline further north. Closer to Durban, Umhlanga and Ballito provide a more polished beach experience, with hotels such as The Oyster Box offering classic luxury and easy access. Looking ahead, 2026 will also see the arrival of a brand new Club Med property in the region, ideal for those wanting a more traditional all-inclusive beach stay.
And yes, whilst South Africa has a reputation for sharks, the Durban coastline is protected, meaning you can safely swim, surf and enjoy the water.
Easy Travel for a South Africa Safari Itinerary
Perhaps one of the biggest benefits of considering a KwaZulu-Natal safari is just how easy it is to explore. Whilst there are no direct flights from the UK into Durban, the journey is still very straightforward. Once you arrive into Johannesburg, you can easily connect through to either Durban or Richards Bay, depending on where your itinerary begins. There are also strong connections via Dubai with Emirates offering a seamless route straight into Durban.
Once you are in the region, there is no need for multiple internal flights. The majority of reserves and coastal areas are within comfortable driving or transfer distance, allowing you to travel in a natural loop rather than constantly doubling back.
Final Thoughts on a KwaZulu-Natal Safari
KZN may not be the first place that comes to mind when planning a safari in South Africa, but that’s exactly what makes it so special. It offers everything you could want from a safari, from Big Five sightings to beautiful lodges, but with added layers of coastline, wetlands, culture and space to breathe.
And as a South Africa travel specialist, this is exactly where I can help. Having now explored KZN on multiple occasions, each focusing on different areas and styles of travel, I can help design a tailor-made South Africa safari itinerary that makes the most of what this region has to offer.
