Costa Rica: A Family Adventure Filled with Wildlife, Culture and Hot Springs
Our G Adventures Costa Rica Family Experience, from tortilla making to toucans and cloud forests
Costa Rica had been on our family wish list for a long time, and this G Adventures Costa Rica Family Experience turned out to be everything we hoped for and more. Over nine days we cooked with local families, glided across lakes beneath a volcano, walked through cloud forests after dark, soaked in natural hot springs and came face to face with incredible wildlife, all while supporting community‑based, sustainable tourism. This is a little look behind the scenes at our journey: what we did, what we learned and why Costa Rica is such a fantastic destination for families who love nature, soft adventure and meaningful experiences.
Costa Rica tour: A Family Adventure with G Adventures

Join me on a nine-day G Adventures Costa Rica Family Experience: a journey of tortillas and toucans, hot springs and hanging bridges, wildlife and meaningful community connections.
Day 1: Tortilla Making & Joy Springs in La Fortuna
We started our adventure with a warm welcome at Cocina de Doña Mara, where we joined a local family in their home. We learned how to make fresh tortillas from scratch, shared a delicious home-cooked lunch and soaked up Mara’s incredible hospitality. The children even enjoyed a special Easter egg hunt that had been organised just for them. In the evening, we headed to Los Lagos hot springs in La Fortuna. Multiple pools, all naturally heated by the nearby volcano, created the perfect place to relax after a busy first day. The kids loved the fun water slides, while the adults could unwind in the warmer pools, surrounded by lush greenery and steam rising into the night.

Day 2: Kayaking on Arenal Lake & Wildlife River Safari
Day two was all about soft adventure and spectacular views. We took to the calm waters of Arenal Lake by kayak, with the majestic Arenal Volcano standing proudly in the distance, framed by mist and rainforest. It was a peaceful yet powerful way to experience Costa Rica’s volcanic landscape. Later, we swapped kayaks for a safari boat and glided along the river with a fantastic local guide who knew exactly where to look for wildlife. We spotted howler monkeys, a sleepy sloth, iguanas, vultures, the famous “Jesus Christ” lizard running across the water and a beautiful kingfisher, along with many other colourful birds. It was the perfect blend of gentle family activity and close-up wildlife encounters.

Day 3: Monteverde Night Walk & Cloud Forest Creatures
In Monteverde, the forest truly came alive after dark. We joined a guided Kinkajou night walk, led by an expert naturalist who helped us observe tarantulas, glass frogs, a pit viper, bioluminescent click beetles, a scorpion and even a sleeping toucan, always at a respectful distance and without disturbing their behaviour. This experience was as educational as it was exciting: learning about ecosystems, adaptation and biodiversity in the cloud forest, while seeing sustainable, small‑group guiding and local conservation in action. It was a powerful reminder of how travel can support communities, protect habitats and inspire the next generation of responsible travellers.

Day 4: Ziplining, Hanging Bridges & Coffee Culture in Monteverde
Our fourth day brought pure adrenaline in the cloud forest. At 100% Aventura Monteverde canopy tour, we soared above the treetops on the longest zipline in Costa Rica and even braved a thrilling 45‑metre jump. It was an unforgettable way to see the forest from a completely different perspective and to share some big “we did it!” family moments. We then slowed the pace at Selvatura Adventure Park, walking across hanging bridges suspended high above the canopy. Mist drifting through the trees, rich green all around and views deep into the forest made it feel as if we were literally walking through the clouds. In the afternoon, we visited Café de Monteverde for an insightful coffee tour. We learned how coffee is grown, harvested and produced, and discovered how sustainable farming practices support both the environment and the local community. Through G Adventures’ partnership with Planeterra, Life Monteverde uses income from tourism to fund educational programmes for local schools and students. This was travel as a true force for good.

Day 5: Road to Quepos & Mangrove Night Boat Tour
The journey towards Quepos was full of colour and surprises. On the way, we were lucky enough to see scarlet macaws flying overhead, their vivid plumage standing out brilliantly against the sky. At our hotel, Mono Azul, tiny squirrel monkeys played and chased each other through the mango trees right beside our room, much to the children’s delight. After dark, we set off on the Isla Damas mangrove night boat tour with Iguana Tours. Under the moonlight, we glided quietly through the mangroves, spotting bullfrogs, kingfishers, caimans, bats, snakes, iguanas and lizards. The sounds of the jungle at night made it feel wild, mysterious and completely unforgettable.

Day 6: Manuel Antonio National Park & Beach Time
Our final day on tour took us into the lush beauty of Manuel Antonio National Park. On a guided hike, we spotted colourful birds, lizards, crabs, iguanas, snakes and even bats. The absolute highlight was watching a sloth slowly climbing down a tree to reach fresh leaves, a rare and magical sight that held everyone in silence. We finished our Costa Rican journey with time on the beach: warm waves, soft sand and the sound of the ocean. In true Costa Rica style, there was even a cheeky white‑faced capuchin who unzipped my bag and stole the UNO cards, clearly ready for game night.
