Skiing in the Easter Holidays
Eight people, school holidays, busy diaries... trying to coordinate a ski trip this season was a challenge in itself 😅 In the end the only week that worked for everyone was the very last week of the Easter holidays, departing 12 April, so pretty late for skiing.
To give ourselves the best chance of good snow, we chose Val Thorens, the highest resort in Europe 🎿 We were warned afternoons could be a bit slushy and that was true when the sun was out, but the overall ski conditions were excellent for the time of year and I would definitely go again at that time of year.
The first couple of days were super foggy with hardly any visibility, which was an interesting start and something I’ve never experienced in the mountains before! Once it cleared, we had blue skies and I came back with a lovely bit of colour on my face ⛷☀️
The Three Valleys were open until the Friday, so we skied Courchevel, Méribel, Orelle as well as Val Thorens, with just the final Saturday limited to Val Thorens only. Lower slopes were busier, but the upper slopes were generally quieter and we didn’t queue for lifts at all. The area is great for all levels which was perfect for our group, from complete beginners to confident intermediates.
We stayed at Club Med for the first time and tried their all-inclusive concept. For a mixed group it worked brilliantly: twice-daily lessons, plus no stressing about food and drinks bills each day. I’m not usually a buffet fan but the standard was excellent at breakfast, lunch and dinner, with lots of choice, great quality and different things at most meal times. I didn’t get bored once, and the chocolate fondue evening was a real highlight 🍫 We also ate at Epicurious one night (included once per stay) for their cheese fondue, which I’d absolutely recommend 🧀
I was a bit nervous about travelling so late in the season, but it turned into a brilliant and really successful week all round. I’d highly recommend Val Thorens and Club Med for a ski holiday 🙌
