Voss: Norway’s Lakeside Ski & Adventure Gem
Imagine stepping off the train in a charming Norwegian town, then gliding straight up into the mountains in less than nine minutes. That is Voss: a beautiful lakeside destination that combines fantastic skiing, dramatic scenery, family-friendly fun and a serious love of adventure.
Voss is often called the adrenaline capital of Norway, and it really lives up to the name. The year-round Voss Gondola runs directly from Voss railway station up to Mount Hanguren at 820 metres above sea level, giving you effortless access to the ski area. In winter you will find wide, well-groomed pistes that suit beginners, families and confident skiers alike, plus off-piste and freestyle options for those who want a bit more excitement. From the top you are treated to breathtaking views over snow-covered peaks, valleys and forests.
I stayed at the Scandic Voss, which is perfectly located right next door to the Gondola. It is a modern, stylish hotel with a relaxed Nordic feel: clean lines, warm woods and big windows that make the most of the light and views. The rooms are comfortable and cosy, ideal for unwinding after a full day on the slopes, and many overlook the lake or mountains. The food here is excellent, especially the breakfast buffet, which is generous and varied, with fresh breads and pastries, local cheeses and cold cuts, hot options and great coffee to set you up for the day.
Voss is renowned for its vibrant sports and music scene, and it has an impressive sporting legacy. It is known as an extreme sports town, offering activities such as indoor and outdoor skydiving, rafting and a whole range of high-adrenaline experiences, all surrounded by stunning mountain scenery. Voss even holds the record for the most Olympic medals per capita in the world and takes real pride in its legendary skiers, local champions and sporting heritage.
For families, Voss works brilliantly. There are excellent indoor pool facilities in the town, ideal for keeping children happy and active after skiing or on a snowy day. In front of the lake you will find playgrounds where little ones can play while you enjoy the views and crisp mountain air. In the centre of Voss there is also a huge family entertainment complex with bowling, soft play and laser tag, which is perfect for mixed-age groups and anyone who wants a break from the slopes without losing the sense of fun.
Voss is also a fantastic place to slow down and take care of your wellbeing. One of the real highlights is the Wild Sauna, which offers panoramic views over the lake so you can sit in the warmth and look out over the water and mountains. Many hotels in and around Voss also offer excellent wellness facilities, including saunas and pool areas, so you can enjoy that classic Scandinavian ritual of hot-and-cold relaxation after a day outdoors.
There is much more to Voss than just thrills. The town offers a rich blend of culture, history, attractions and beautiful nature. The lakeside setting is particularly special: calm, glassy water reflecting the mountains and colourful buildings, especially picturesque at sunrise and sunset. It is a lovely place to stroll, pause with a coffee or simply soak up the peaceful atmosphere between activities.
Food and drink are a real highlight here too. Voss has a surprisingly wide choice of places to eat, from relaxed cafés and bakeries to inviting bistros and restaurants that showcase Norwegian flavours and local ingredients. One standout experience is the Park Hotel Vossenvangen. It is home to an extraordinary wine cellar with over 47,000 bottles, and I was lucky enough to enjoy a guided visit with their onsite sommeliers, followed by an unforgettable five-course dinner with perfectly paired wines. For anyone who loves fine dining and exceptional wine, this is a very special evening to remember.
Whether you are a keen skier, an adventure-seeker, a family needing plenty of activities on and off the slopes, or simply someone who wants fresh air, beautiful scenery and great food, Voss is a fantastic choice. With easy access from the railway station to the mountains, modern accommodation beside the Gondola, family-friendly facilities, lively sports and music, and that serene lakeside backdrop, it offers a unique and memorable Norwegian escape.
