Thailand Longtail Boats

Thailand: Is It Really For You? An Honest Guide From Someone Who’s Been

Alice Hornsby on 01 May 2025

Thailand is one of those places that looks almost unreal on Instagram: white sand, turquoise water and longtail boats framed perfectly against the horizon. But scroll a little further and you might also see clips that make you question whether it is the right destination for you. In this blog I draw on my own trips to Thailand, plus the experiences of my clients, to give you a clear, honest picture of what it is really like, when to go, who it suits and how to avoid the parts that do not appeal. So you can decide, with confidence, if Thailand deserves a place on your holiday shortlist.

You’ve seen the Instagram shots of white sand and longtail boats, and maybe the less flattering clips on TV and social media. So, is Thailand really worth it for your next holiday? In my opinion: absolutely YES, if it is planned properly.

I’ve visited twice: Bangkok and Khao Lak on the Andaman Coast, then Koh Samui and Koh Phangan in the Gulf of Thailand in 2025. Both trips were very different, and I loved them equally. Thailand remains one of my favourite destinations to plan for clients.

When to go?

Thailand is a year‑round destination, but timing matters:

  • Andaman Coast (Khao Lak, Phuket, Krabi, nearby islands, Khao Sok):
Best between November and April when it is cooler and drier.
  • Gulf of Thailand (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao):
Best during the UK summer months.

Who is it for?

Pretty much everyone:

  • Couples and honeymooners
  • Families with children
  • Groups of friends
  • Adventurous solo travellers

You can have full‑on adventure, complete relaxation, or a bit of both.

Why Thailand?

Think:

  • Incredible food
  • 5 star service and hospitality
  • Picture‑perfect beaches
  • Lush rainforest and culture

Yes, there is a party scene and yes, some areas are very commercial. That is exactly why it pays to plan with someone who knows where to send you and where to avoid. With careful hotel and resort choices, you can enjoy all the beauty of Thailand without the bits that do not appeal.

Cost and value

Thailand is no longer “backpacker cheap”, but:

  • It is still better value than Europe for the standard you get.
  • Accommodation quality is high, especially from 4 star upwards.
  • Your money goes further on eating out, drinks, spa treatments and activities.

I always recommend 4 star or above for my clients, and I will never suggest anything less. You feel the difference in comfort, facilities and service as soon as you arrive.

The local currency is the Thai Baht. In restaurants I suggest tipping around 10% if a service charge is not already included.

Is Thailand right for you?

Thailand is a great option if you want:

  • Warm seas and soft, sandy beaches
  • Big flavours and amazing local food
  • A mix of culture, nature and relaxation
  • High‑standard hotels with genuinely warm service

If the images have tempted you but you are unsure based on what you have seen online, that is where I come in. I will listen to what you love (and what you definitely do not), then build a Thailand itinerary that fits you perfectly and avoids the parts you are worried about.
